I always thought it was such a brilliant creative decision about the Vulcans to make them not an Android-like race innately void of emotional capacity, but rather an INTENSELY emotional race that suppresses its turbulent torrent of passion beneath an imperturbably calm surface by sheer force of will.

@@alwaysonyourtail2563 We’re talking about external influences that Spock didn’t willingly consent to. Sex can be a beautiful experience for someone if that person consents to it. But, when forced upon someone, it’s utter misery. I think the same can be said about Spock. Most episodes of Star Trek feature Spock’s devotion to Kirk no matter what, no matter how harsh the circumstances. Spock openly declares his friendship with Kirk. That kind of devotion, that friendship, would not be possible unless Spock actually cared about Kirk.

Why not make the slime pit and dark walls IN the holodeck? Then changes can be made immediately and there is no cleanup afterwards. Just end the program when finished. The Enterprise's quarters are capable of substantial environmental changes to accommodate passengers. Holodecks require power and thus it's inefficient plus they are not only susceptible to power failures which would then drop the ambassadors on the floor, but holodeck malfunctions which I doubt would make the ambassadors feel safe.Furthermore a slime pool would presumably require living microbes that the holodeck can't actually produce. Correct me if I'm wrong but has anyone else noticed that art does not seem to exist in this universe? There's no contemporary music or literature or movies. It's always Mozart or Moby Dick. Nothing referenced beyond the 19th century.

Saves having to come up with a new style of music or art.

There is an episode on DS9, I forget which one, where Dr. Bashir has comment about "contemporary literature" being obsessed with making human versions of alien works.

A rare failure of imagination for Star Trek's creative team combined with trying to avoid copyright laws. I would also imagine a bit of self consciousness. Anything they invented for the show as far as music or pop culture could end up being seen as dated ten or twenty years later. So they stuck with things that were already classic and established and timeless. It's easier to come up with where our technology will take us than it is to come up with what art someone will create. They've gotten better with this as the franchise has gone on, and Holo programs provide a different art form. But while they reference fictional books and the like, they actually did avoid inventing new art forms and works whole cloth that weren't an extension of available technology.

I love how Star Trek always portrays non-emotional Vulcans guests as being extremely emotional and irrational.
@3Rayfire
@3Rayfire 3 года назад
Sarek being one of the prototypes was always a bit more emotional than others. Probably why he has a predilection for human women. For instance in Journey to Babel he actually gave a rye smile....or well, smirk. He also displayed exasperation if not anger at Kirk for shooting Spock into space in a torpedo tube instead of bringing him home.
@Niall001
@Niall001 3 года назад
@@3Rayfire On Enterprise, it seemed like all of the Vulcans were very emotional. The actors spent a lot of time trying to portray them as continually suppressing emotions rather than what we got with Spock or Tuvok.

They're not non-emotional. They feel emotions intensely, but strive to keep them under control through logic and discipline.

Damn you, Parso! Your clips are so enticing... so leading... and yet, they don't quite GET THERE. So maddening... Eventually one might find the "missing link" to a prior clip that will continue a story line... but, alas, those gems are rare, indeed! My regard for you is both Love and Hate: Love that you find such intense interactions to share... Hate that you leave each one dangling with no resolution. You are a CUR of the First Order! I will not cease watching and pressing the "Like" button for your vids, but I BESEECH you, sir: please start tidying up all these loose, elusive, maddening, infernal ends! If not, I forthwith with much malice aforethought, Damn you to Dante's insane creation! (And can you give me a link to the next scene of this scenario?) Please?

I noticed that too, although I hadn't paid attention to it when it was first broadcast. Maybe it was done for the framing of the shot, but I doubt it was any hint of flirting, more like just a personal space thing. I've met people like that who stand a little too close by nature, and it gives me the creeps.
