I really wanted him to try and bluff grazz, or messenger Lucius to bluff grazz (Charisma boi). Say stuff like "Why are you so uncertain?" Or take a leap of fate, vaguely pointing out cheating mechanics that could be anything like "Don't you have a "vision" for these types of things, or "Not so controlling now" even if it was wrong. Just feed his uncertainty with something, anything! I dunno, "either you win or lose, or we could have an outcome where neither happens (a draw).

Grazzt is a Demon-Lord not an Arch-Devil, meaning Grazzt is not bound by contracts enforced by cosmic law, he didn't specify when the servitude would start but he didn't have to, Grazzt could force you into service immediately, let you go for a minute, an hour, a day, a year and then force you into service etc... he could double your time or set you free at any point, sure you made an agreement but why would a Demon honour a contract if they didn't feel like it? nothing is forcing them to . . . except maybe other Demons.

@@Ziajin Wrong. Only channel divinities that create a magical effect are magical effects. You could have a physical effect happen such as your god punching an enemy (And yes that actually happened in a critical role episode)

@@Ziajin well again, no not entirely true. You're correct I thought we were talking about divine intervention (why did I think that???), however some channel divinities are physical such as war gods blessing or guided strike, though those ones don't have saving throws associated with them. I can't recall all channel divinities however, nor have I read them all (probably) so maybe there is one. Additionally "magical effects" is extremely overused in the rulebooks to the point where it pretty much loses meaning. There are numerous instances where "magical effect" is used to describe something that has no magic associated with it. So that comes entirely down to how you choose to interpret it. In my view the influence of a god is the same as a monks ki; magic that isn't magic and doesn't suffer the drawbacks of magic.

@@Ziajin Theres a reason I know you haven't read the rules. If you had you would already know that what I said is true. Additionally in an early interview Jeremy Crawford himself said they made some mistakes with misleading wording. He then highlighted two areas of misleading wording; Melee weapon attacks do not need to include a weapon, and magical effects are not always magic. But sure, lets go with you. A guy who read one paragraph of one rule and now knows better then the creator of the game. I'm not gonna keep arguing with someone who can't even be arsed to read more then paragraph.

I feel like if Mark was going to let them win he would have put the win or lose card in the position so they could. So unless they came up with some extremely brilliant thing it was unlikely they’d win.

Through persuasion, via Lucious. My idea was to appeal to the "fairness" of the game and change the rules before they play but after they've declared they will take the first turn. At the end of the game, only 6 out of 14 cards are flipped and 8 are unused. What a waste. What a boring, benign, uninteresting game! So, just like poker, propose a "card burning" rule, where each time you flip a card, you also burn another card so it's unflippable. The result is the game has 6 flipped cards and 8 unflipped cards, same as before, so what's the difference, really? Then increase the stakes as an incentive, bet eternity instead of just 200 years, and play up that it's all random anyway and they can't possibly know which cards are which. Quill can easily find the reversed Broken One with one question - "Which card will immediately make us lose the game?". He just needs to burn that card first while picking the Dark Lord to get a solid lead. Then they have no way to lose. Side note: this is why you always pick Subtle Spell for metamagic.

You are kind of right on both accounts. Yes he cheated no matter what he says he has forfeited his right to the stake on that account. But his annoyance and the reason why are only subtly different. Full marks regardless.

I mean mark placed the cards how they were so really there was no way they could win from the start

@@TheXDman123 this. He had a you lose card the whole time. And clearly they did not have the positive broken card.

Yeah there was no chance they were going to win the game. In the lore he gave them before they got there was Grazzt has never lost. He says through Qills vision that Grazzt didn’t know if it was upright or not but just knew the card was the broken one, but there was no way Mark didn’t have it setup that way. He designed the story to be like this on purpose. If he rolled to pick a card it would be truly random but he knew what cards to draw and he designed it for the story line. They were supposed to lose and he played it out for the RP.

@@Joestone1984 tbf, mark could have had a way of distinguishing which card is which without seeing which way up they were on his second screen. We don't know what mark could see and he's definitely the type where he would set it up so he didn't know which way round they were

@@xininjaaix7873 No he knew exactly what card was where and how it was to be played. It was a story driven element. They were never going to win that game and get the ring. Let’s say the players pulled it by mistake, they lose and it seems even more fair since it was their choice. The character was a showman and played it out for the end making the crowd and the players think they had a chance. He flat out said he cheated to win to them. The whole point of the encounter was to get them to free their friends to setup a chase and potentially more allies( and enemies) for the fight to come. I’m not knocking Mark for this. It was the purest form of a no win scenario for them but it was one they had to take. It cemented Thalia as a vigilant ally and also gave Aila an opportunity to gain a friend with ties to her origins.

In hindsight I should have. But it's like any number of abilities where people aren't thinking about them until they are used. I don't want to go hey that's lame though since you are also calling out Mark and he is doing his best. And while I certainly know that high level fiends have truesight forgetting about the possibility was better for the tension that was needed in the moment.

I think that's what Graazt was saying when Quill asked if he himself could reveal the last card. Quill had the intention of flipping it up so the Broken One would reverse and be upright, while before they had been flipping the cards sideways so the original placing of the card (up or down) was the same.

@@J_is_okay I think he said he would reverse it and then flip it. My point is that there is no need to actually reverse anything just choose the right way how you will flip the card. Graazt said nothing about that.

@@ondrejbronec837 I agree that they could have done that but it was too late. In retrospect they should have asked the Storm Eye about the Broken One and do what you are saying (aka pick it up the right way so it would no longer be reversed). I think if Quill picked it up the way you are saying Graazt would have stopped him/said that wasn't the correct way. They could have argued that there were no rules about how to pick up the cards but I mean they'd be arguing this a demon prince so...
