Some of the discussion may have been "was it a forward pass"? More than likely they sorting out the enforcement.

Ooh, this one was fun. I think the wing official was downfield enough that he may have thought the pass was backwards to A50.

And that first play involved a semi-final playoff crew. Some of the best of the best the association has to offer. And we wonder why coaches get upset with us.

We had one in a playoff game last year. My white hat was empathic that we were going to call the illegal touching and not intentional grounding. He's an R at higher levels than I so I deferred to his enforcement. I thought it should have been Intentional grounding but as an LOS, I don't spend time in the R meetings and know what they want from a philosophy.

The illegal touching signal is two hands on the shoulder. I think one if not two only gave us one hand, which is illegal kicking followed by a point to the foot/toe

Ryan, you cannot have illegal touching and illegal fwd pass on the same play. Illegal touching applies only to a legal forward pass by rule. 7-5-13. Basically international grounding trumps illegal touching. As always great job with all these videos. You make HS officiating better nationwide.

This is really great, I've never considered the grounding aspect of a pass that is illegally touched. What's also amusing is that the lineman who caught the ball in the 3rd clip will technically be credited with a reception in the stat book due to the penalty being declined 😅

On the 3rd play I’m perfectly fine with the R auto declining that. It’s easier just to decline it than explain it’s a LOD foul and there’s no extension of the period. Coaches and fans understand the defense would decline. Same diff. Make it easier on all. Only time the explanation is needed is if it’s a scoring play.

I do think this likely should have been a forward progress stop on the qb. To me the rules are pretty cut and dry and too many officials use some other sort of criteria when determining forward progress.

Im not convinced the pass was forward and I dont think the officials were either (and they were right there on the field not with an angle from 15 yards downfield. Looks like it was thrown about the 42 and caught about the 42. I dont think they missed the fact an OL caught it, they just gave them the benefit of doubt it was not forward. And in fact the officials likely knew about the possibility of this play before the game started

Not an official here, but can a player wearing a jersey number 50-79 catch a backwards pass? To me, it's close to being a backward pass.

Official here, any player can catch a backwards pass or take a handoff and advance the ball. If you look at the yard lines where the pass was released (41) and where it was caught (42) we can clearly see the pass was forward

Thanks. I did color commentary for a local high school. Had a game where an OL caught a pass behind the line of scrimmage. No call. I know this doesn't apply to all officials, but this crew had all graduated from the school we were playing (the offending team), so our team never got the benefit of a call against our archrival (again, the offending team). It was sad. That kind of mindset should be left in the locker room. PERIOD.

My PBP partner has known the referee for years, and his officiating crew is mainly made up of fellow alumni.
