Those Vineland highschoolers handled that situation waaay better than I would have, and I'm a grown ass adult. Mad respect.

Got a relative who is a ref, and he's told me that high school officials are generally taught to move the ball to the closest hash mark, forward or backward depending on where it's spotted, to avoid headaches with the chain gang on the next set of downs. However, they're explicitly told not to do this when a first down conversion is in play AND they're definitely not allowed to manipulate the yard markers at all. Bad look by this crew.

As a parent of a first time football player who is a senior in HS, this is heartbreaking to see for the kids! They give their all to have someone blatantly and intentionally do that type of crap. Especially as an Adult REF! Complete BS. Yes, it's great the children handled it well, which makes my heart hurt even more!!

We got a ref in my town that is so "large" he can't bend over and pick up the ball. He's constantly getting run over by plays and since he can't pick up the ball he just kicks it to where he thinks the ball should be. Everyone is gaining and loosing yardage cuz he can't do the job right. They call him hot dog cuz there's been a number of times he was eating while on the field.

I play for Wildwood and had that ref for like 2 of our games last month. Our whole home crowd hated him because of missed calls and misplaced balls throughout both games. I didn't like his calls at all but whenever I talked to him he was always coordial. I would have never guesses he would blatantly cheat like that though. Me and my teammate would always complement his beard🤣

I ran a chain gang for many years, and can attest that it’s not unheard of to adjust the chain after it’s initially pulled-for example, if the clip is first placed on the wrong side of the line, or if the chain itself is kinked, or if someone's foot is in the way. But I never saw an official *_re-spot_* the ball like the one in the video did. Wow.

Every time someone says "the ref cheated" they're just complaining about a questionable call. Not anymore because this... well this is cheating

I've played against both of these teams in high school and had that same crew and I can confidnetly say the refs do this all the time. NJ high school refs are notoriously bad and I'm glad it's finally being shown

We had a ref in a high school game that was constantly throwing flags when there wasn't even a penalty. We took him out on the second half kickoff, he left on a stretcher.

That ref should be in jail. That was truly disgusting and an affront to all sports.

White hat is the head honcho in Refereetown, so he gets to make the definitive calls on first down. But that usually doesn't include arbitrarily resetting the chains and spotting the ball after it was spotted.

All refs should know by now that Jomboy is always watching.

I love the ref holding the chain, pausing and looking at where the ball was moved to, and just staying there, dumbstruck, and suddenly snap out of it. Might've been the best part.

Couldn’t imagine reffing a high school game and being called out as a cheater on jomboy? The referee shouldn’t be allowed to ref a pickup game on my front yard.

This is depressing and infuriating, especially with it happening to high school kids. This is why refs should not be afraid of calling out a blatantly terrible calls. The ref holding the marker knew that wasn't a first down. You can call a huddle to call out the error quietly and discreetly but when it's something this obvious, one of the other refs HAS to at least say something.

FYI, that's the 12 yard line. The 10's always have a full line across the field. And 56 definitely held - you can tell because of how he's behind the guy but still slowing the guy down.

Playing high school baseball, I once had an umpire call a strike on me that literally bounced a foot in front of the plate. I turned and looked at him and he just looked me in the eye and said, "Just turn around and hit." Struck out swinging at another pitch out of the zone but there was clearly no choice other than to swing at anything. Shenanigans in high school level officiating are an unfortunate reality.

I absolutely hate high school refs. My grandson plays for a small school in Missouri. This year's games have been mired by so many bad calls and non-calls that I wouldn't even know where to begin. Whenever these young men are vying for college scholarships and the teams are competing for state championships, a couple of bad calls in a game can be very detrimental to their rewards. And there is no accountability whatsoever among these officials. I was told that there is a shortage of officials in Missouri, so they are hiring practically anyone who is capable of throwing a small handkerchief to the ground. Also, bias against or for one team or another is rampant. I think that if their paychecks were more lucrative, there might be a better caliber of refs taking the field. It's really sad.

I've seen Highschool umps stretch the flag as far as possible and then tilt the flag away from the ball at a 45 degree angle to deny a 1st down. This was at Friendship Christian in Lebanon TN.

I'm a high school football official in Kentucky. I have so many questions. The referee should never be touching the ball on a measurement. His job is to simply observe the measurement and make the call on what it is. The back judge or another official should be holding the ball to make sure it doesn't move on the measurement after the spot is determined. The referee certainly shouldn't be touching the measurement stake either. Hence why the umpire is so bamboozled by what's going on. The only thing I can figure is that the white cap didn't like the wing official's spot so he took it upon himself to correct it. Or maybe something else is going on behind the scenes that we missed here. Even if you are going to change the spot (which a white cap should NEVER do, because its not his responsibility), then why the hell would you wait until the measurement is going on which is clearly in view for TV cameras and both teams right on top of you. Blatant cheating or total incompetence, one or the other.

As a former HS basketball official, and from my perspective, post-season assignments are what you work the entire off-season and regular season to do. Yes, regular season games with a competitive schedule and good schools are important and nothing to be sneezed at, but post-season is where it's at (and I can say this having never gotten a post-season assignment - not the reason I hung up my whistle btw). Them being banned from post-season is a big deal IOW.

this reminds me how during one of my games it was 4th quarter and like 20 seconds left on the clock and it was a field goal and it went in and the refs just ended up ruling it off and saying not good because, and i quote, “we weren’t ready.” For the entire game they also were calling us for holding and even had one of our touchdowns revoked and it was a 40 yard touchdown too.

What a bewildering & shameful display by a ref during a high school football game, whose placement of the ball was far from integrity. I was glad to see Vineland come back and score a touchdown to win the game a second time.

Reminds me when my winless team was up against a team that dropped out of the playoffs to avoid playing Valor (CMC's high school). Teams that don't make playoffs get one last game, which was this game. We were actually winning. Fairly nicely. Momentum was enormous for us. Until our DE DEMOLISHED their QB running and option read. He got lit up passing back to the tailing runner and we got flagged for roughing the passer... On a running play. Couple other questionable calls would happen that game and we ended up losing by like, 10 due to some bad calls at critical stops

You see the problem is that ref is used to using the metric system because he grew up in Canada and then the conversion from yards to meters to yards and then it was short of 10 meters but yards are shorter than meters and then the first down.

This just happened in Alabama. Two locals teams were competing for region championship. Both teams were undefeated. The home team by comparison was dominant but closely matched. The visiting team never got even a measurement but always had a first down. On the one time they did measure it was 2 chainlinks short but it was given to them. Each time the home team got close, the sticks came out, even if it was a clear first down. The booth camera operator actually zoomed in on the ball on the last possession in the game for the home team. The ball was clearly even with the stick. The ref signaled short and the stadium erupted as it had been caught live. This was on top of no holding calls against the visiting team, two touchdowns called back for no apparent reason, a clear fumble recovery that was called down, each touchdown the opposing team scored was by way of penalties and blatant, on camera holding that was never called, late hits, roughing the passer and facemasks never called on them and so many phantom calls on the home team it was ridiculous. The icing on the cake was the laser being shined in the qb's, rb's and receiver's eyes from the opposing side. When the players went to address it, they were given an unsportsmanlike. All that and the other team only won by six with their twenty points being given to them by the refs and taking away 12 points from our boys. Sad that grown men have to step in and fix the game and ruin a season for kids that worked so hard.

Hey Jomboy, check out where the other post is at after the last first down. The guy on the 22.5 yard line doesn’t even bother holding the post the last play or two so when they stretch the chain he just picks a new spot for the post. Bad ref but the crew holding the sticks created that issue.

Question is, where is the coach in all of this? My high school wrestling coach lost his shit every time officials made a bad call.

We had a touchdown one time in highschool because our quarterback threw the ball and hit the back of a players foot who was looking downfield. Someone else caught it and ran it for a touchdown but because the ref thought we “planned” it. We got the touchdown taken away

He was down at the 13. They placed it at the 12, then shortened the Chain, then moved the Ball past the chain. It was a disaster of Refereeing.

That is why there should be reviews or challenges for at least high school playoff football cuz this kind of shit is a absolute disgrace to high school sports and if this effects playoff games or seeding into the playoffs for high school football and it makes refs even more hated for all their inconsistency and controversial call in all the sports

The rolling of the ball was lateral and was only intended to move it closer to the stick. The loosening of the chains is where the cheating occurred. I once saw a game on TV where the official marked the end of the play with his foot, then looked over at the yardsticks, and slid his foot backwards half a yard. The play was short by about six inches.

damn and I thought my alma mater got screwed in their playoff game when the refs measured a 1st down by pulling the chain tight to measure and then placing the ball down but this is far worse. Years ago I played against a ref that was known for being a terrible cheating ref but he was never this blatant. Weird thing he kind of looked like this dude to, but Im sure its not because Oklahoma and its been long enough Im sure hes dead or enjoying his last days by now

I was asked to referee for PA youth baskeball (PIAA). But I turned them down because I thought I would be too disruptive overturning the incorrect calls made by other refs.

Reminds me of that situation where the ref in Texas got laid out a few years back. This is an example of how to be classy when dealing with a ref.

My son played a H.S. basketball game against a team in NM where the refs would start their 5 sec count and THEN throw the ball to the inbounds guy. A lot of 5 sec. calls in that game.

As a youth coach for decades what happens is parents often end up as the "chain gang" at these types of games. To remove the fudging that can happen by the parents the refs will mark the downs to start on yard markers. The head official probably knew the actual starting yard mark and from the placement of the ball he had already determined it was a first down. Just my two cents.

That was nothing....the Refs during Georgia High School playoffs used to call holding whenever they needed to pull a score back during the late 1970s, early 1980s. That's a lot worse than giving a first down.
