More than 25,000 students take the specialized science high school entrance exam (SSHAT) to vie for 5,000 seats at the specialized high schools, also called the exam schools.
Geez, people can be harsh. Someone wrote: "If you have to study to get in, you probably don't belong there." Don't think like this. if you need to study, then study. Not everyone is equally naturally academically talented, but everyone can be hard-working. It is hard work that will get you through the admissions test and through school. Just as long as you know the structure of the test and do some practice, you should be fine. If you study for years or months and get in, that's great. it probably means you're always on task and will most likely excel in school. if you study for a few days or weeks (or even for no time at all) and get in, that's also great. It doesn't matter how long you study for. if you get in, you get in; that's a great achievement despite what other people may think or say. Good luck to those who already took the test and/or are taking the test in the future!
I completely agree. Natural talent is great, but it can only get you so far in life. I am currently a sophomore at Brooklyn Tech (Gateway to Medicine Major) and while there are a bunch of geniuses, the top students are up there because of their incredible work ethic and organizational skills. Good luck to all those taking the test!
Ashely Chong But what if we tried and tried and no matter how much effort was put in, you can’t get in? I mean, I spent more than a year on prepping for the SHSAT and didn’t get a offer for a single specialized high school. It made me discriminate those who attended specialized high schools because I feel such envious emotions towards them. I’m well aware this is a awful way of viewing life, but I can’t stop these feelings. I still hold these feelings several years after starting high school so in the end, I can’t accept the fact that specialized high schools even exist. Why bother having schools that are considered superior than others when it just makes the students that attend regular public high schools, feel stupid?

I get that but what if you have some one who is talented and is has a good work ethic against a person who just has the good wirk ethic? No one said that just because someone is talented they wint work hard.
I have heard a lot of controversy regarding the change of the SHSAT .As a student attending one of New York's specialized High School's next year, I believe that eliminating the use of the SHSAT is not an effective method to diversify Specialized High Schools. Using new methods such as comparing test scores and a student's academics are too subjective. How can you say that one person's abilities are better than another student's? Also, the use of the test helps eliminate this issue. A test is NOT subjective and it can determine who really has a strive and motivation to attend these schools. Of course, many students in New York don't have access to the education support that others may have. In my opinion. I believe that Mayor de Blasio shoud create more programs that will help students learn the skills that they need in order to achieve their goals and to thrive in specialized high schools. As a state, we shouldn't lower the expectation bar for Specialized High Schools. We should instead provide more resources to students living in areas where resources are not available. Not only would this be an effective solution, but it would also be fair for ALL the STUDENTS that have tried tremendously hard to prepare for the SHSAT. On behalf of all my fellow Specialized High School students and of all students in New York, please DON'T GET RID OF THE SHSAT.
People who r taking the test in 2017 (me) are the guinea pigs. we legit dont know what kind of questions will b on the test. I mean we do, but 10 questions from each section won't be graded n we dont know how those will be
Yea, I have mine tomorrow, i am a bit scared though, but I know what questions are on the test. Its just Reading Comprehension, Grammar, and then Math(with grid in)
The Mystery Sith the Reading comprehension and grammar was oddly easy. And when I mean oddly easy a 3rd grader could do it. The math was easy but it took a lot of calculations and time so I had to guess on them 😭
I'm taking this test in a few weeks and I'm only studying. A few days befire the test, I do excellent in ela , but math 😬😬 lets just say I need that little boost 😬
@@tianna7853 I had test anxienty during the test, so I didn't score as high as I couldve scored. But I got a 510, which is still ok. I got into brooklyn tech.
@@i.likes.nature hey man! lol I do I ended up getting a full ride to del state and never got into a specialized school. good luck to you on ur path through high school
I got into Stuyvesant back in 2010 by studying for a month lmao and took 1 practice exam. I also don't recommend going to a specialized High School, its really not all that.
"Remember though, just cause you're book smart doesn't mean you're going to get anywhere in life.' dude, you are more likely to NOT GET ANYWHERE IN LIFE if you don't know how to read or to read well. You already implied that you are not "naturally smart" and now you are implying you are not "book smart" either -- what's left? good luck
I’m gonna be completely honest and say that specialized high schools are a bit of a messed up system. Now, I have no right to say any of this considering I’m not in a Specialized high school, but based off my experience of taking the SHSAT and those who go to specialized high schools, I can say it’s ruining a few students’ high school life. Certain students that believed they can’t get into a specialized high school start to think they’re stupid or depressed because they worked so hard to get into a specialized high school only not to get in. This makes them feel like they’re in the wrong school once they enter the school they submit through their application. Specialized high schools are considered schools for gifted people. If they don’t get in, they’re not gifted or special. That’s the mindset that is crammed into every students’ head in NYC. Some students also stop hanging out with their friends because they feel a sense of distance between them and their friends since they got into a specialized high school. They feel, “I don’t have the right to be with them and drag them down because they’re special. They’re working hard in a gifted school and I should not hang out with them any longer.” I think that if specialized high schools were not seen as this unreachable “heaven” for all to competitively reach, then it won’t have to divide them from others. That’s what I think anyways.
Wait. Wait. Wait. Did that women just say that for specialized high schools they don't look at your attendance / grades IS THIS TRUE??? I have the worst attendance because I have anxiety/ ibs and my counselor said I CAN get a long note from my doctor, but please oh god let this be true if yes I WILL STUDY MY ASS OFF
I was graduated in 1950 from an elite HS in NYC, Brooklyn Tech. I knew little about Brooklyn Tech when I was admitted four years earlier. All I knew was the reputation that it was a much better school than my home district HS. When I went on to Brooklyn College, an elite, scholarship college with an entrance examination, I learned that the prison-like environment and rigidity of Brooklyn Tech was not a good preparation for college or for life. Later, in graduate school where I earned a PhD in physics, I met colleagues from Brooklyn, my home town, who had gone to their district high schools. They also earned PhDs in physics. They had not been held back by their district high schools and experienced a far more normal life than I had behind the concrete walls of Brooklyn Tech to which I had to ride the subways twice a day for four years. I don't know if it has changed much in the decades since my attendance. I hope it has. I don't know if its students still are ruled by an authoritarian, one like Joseph Fanning, who admonishes with a Catholic Bible as Fanning did me, a Jew. My experience tells me that students who are motivated and bright do not need Brooklyn Tech or Stuyvesant or any other elite HS. It is just the converse. The elite schools need them!
It’s honestly more or less the same shit as any other specialized high school it’s not like Stuyvesant is Harvard and tech in comparison is a community college
@@oren5332 yes that's true obviously I mean it's still an amazing school. Just to say the test was easy and get into the 2cnd lowest school is a little bit odd
Im trying to get into Stuyvesant High school or Bronx Science, im about to do the test in October im studying hard, and im doing the dream program this summer to help me also with rigorous courses that the city offer and the things that would be on the test, was the test hard? or easy? Also can you please share me advice so I can also be able to get in please? Thanks :) :D
My average for 7th grade was a 89 every quarter for 6th grade an 85 and I go to a private school currently ans never changed or switched schools once I can't wait to graduate lol , I also have to take another high school admissions test which is tachs I think it should be easier than shsat lol I'm taking it next week thursday 😒🙏
Attention, if you are taking the 9th grade SHSAT, do not study for 1 month only, if you study for about 3 months you can get in. I say, if you get a 440 on the 8th grade test, you can get a 540 on the next and possibly get into Bronx Science of Tech. I plan on retaking the 9th grade shsat as I only got a 460, but I did not study at all and guessed for 30 questions. So if you failed only because you didn't prepare but still got close like me, then DEFINITELY study for the 9th grade SHSAT because there is incredible potential (a person got a 653 on the 9th grade test as they only got a 540 on the 8th grade).
+GilbertAndBowser Times you need to start studying for each major school. Stuyvesant: At least Fall of 7th grade; Brooklyn Tech: Fall of 8th grade until the SHSAT; Staten Island Tech: Spring of 7th grade

Tom holland visited Bronx Science undercover so he could experience how high school is in New York. I put HSMSE first for specialized but I was considering putting Bronx Science first because Tom Holland's feet touched there
@@missesmukta3415 ermmm it’s okay i Guess, also I’m not naturally smart, it’s just the schools I went too had above average curriculum and longer hours.
its not that hard their overating it the SHSAT is not taht hard. I stuided lik 2 hours a day for 8-10 months and in my pracitce test get 100-105/114 range
if you want to get into stuy you have to put it down first and score in the top three percent as others who take the test, but for bronx you have to put it down first and get top five percent
Hi so I’m in 6th grade should I start studying now? I want to get into SI tech and got invited in the 5th grade to visit the school. I’ve been watching many videos about the shsat and have been worried sick even though I have 2 years to go. pls help
You should start as early as possible. However, don't stress too much until 7th grade. I started from scratch at the end of 7th grade, with 6 months to prepare, and got into Tech. You'll be fine.
Well, if you make it in there and handle stress and time management well in Stuy, you'll be more set for college by graduation than other kids. And Stuy has lots and lots of electives (take medical diagnosis, for example. :3 Awesomenesssss), so make sure that you have some sort of goal for your future job and stuff. ;3 So no, it's not a bad idea.
Brooklyn Tech is a lovely school - as a former student I can tell you, it is definitely very diverse and challenging- by the time you reach college you will be well prepared. Make sure you take advantage of the many clubs and school activities - it can be a little intimidating at first but there is something for everybody!
I follow the controversy over the entrance exam for these schools, but only yesterday became aware of a problem with the selection process. Specifically the way school preference is used to bump the most gifted students. This is not a merit based selection system. It is a mixed selection system and it is covertly racist. Hear me out. Each school only has a finite number of seats. By eliminating students from the running by ranking them by their school preference you enroll lower scoring students and exclude higher scoring students. Lets say there are two schools left out of four and there are three students. School 1 full School 2 full School 3 one seat School 4 one seat Student A has a score of 750 School preference 1,2,3,4 Student B has a score of 700 School preference 3,4,2,1 Student C has a score of 650 School preference 4,3,2,1 Even though student A has the highest score out of the three students the other two students each have a first choice advantage and will get into a school but student A - the highest scoring student - will not get into a school. What if the highest scoring student happens to be Asian, the next white and the next black? If the system were truely merit based the black - lowest scoring student - wouldnt get into a school. The way the process should work is that all of the students should be ranked by their score and then assigned to a school based upon their preference. If a students first choice school fills up before they get in then that student should get their second choice school, not loose it to a lower scoring student based upon that students school preferences. This is an attempt to change the demographics of those schools. It is a highly covert form of racism due to the fact that Asian students overwhelmingly score higher than other races on the test and by using school preference to bump a high scoring Asian student out of the running, you allow a lower scoring student into the running and here is the covert racism - that student may not be Asian. WAKE UP SMART KIDS! YOU ARE BEING PLAYED. It gets even worse. If one of the four schools isnt as popular as the other three - perhaps its the furthest away - then it may be a second, third, fourth choice for most students which would allow really low scoring students to make it their first choice and nearly guarantee that they will get in. Imagine one elite school that is comprised of nearly all low scoring students while hundreds of students that scored well above them dont get into any of the schools simply due to their school preferences. Criminal!
I am a 7th grader and I started to study at September and I am very nervous any advice on WHT to study from and how ..or where to get the formulas 😕😨😨😨😨😨
Im Staying at my School for 9th grade, it’s in the Bronx. Could I transfer to a Specialized High School in Manhattan?. My reason is because I’m unhappy, my school is boring.
where did you get that information? lol i know for a fact that the cutoff was around 570 (it is every single year, it has been since i tested in) and that bronx was around 520.. and i hope by well known organization you dont mean the ny post because that's the worst paper on the planet

Any advice on me taking the test? I started studying last month and i don't know what 9th grade math to study for, do I study every lesson in math for 9th grade? I'm taking the test next year but i don't know how to study....
When you say: "that's life" do you believe you can't get an 'A'? Do you want As & Bs? If you attend school with little absence, we could show you critical techniques to enable you to get 'B's and above, regardless of your disabilities. Most high achievers find it difficult to sit through something that fails to challenge them, or they find boring. You just need to find a trigger or motivator. For most w/ ADHD who hate to read, starting with comics then autobiographies works well.
You have to prove they are false. Otherwise they are UNKNOWN. Let alone that, but I said "might" meaning it is speculation. I didn't accuse your school of anything, I just meant it might be happening and you just don't realize it.
um glad to reign on your parade, but Brooklyn Latin is ...ehem number one, numero uno, numerus unus, # 1. Try to study for your test next time . usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/new-york/rankings?int=8d7a2b
What's left I was smart enough to vote for Mitt Romney, and what are you kid? I'm smart enough, I just don't like to read, it bores me, I've read thouroughly or however it's spelled the greatest book ever written, the New King James Bible, don't argue with me son, I'm 32 years old I'm older than you, and much wiser on life, trust me, you're not going to win.
I don't care how low Stuyvesant is, I'm just doubtful that Brk.-Latin is the best school in the city. There are so many other schools I've seen that are more deserving (Bx-Sci, Townsend Harris, and Staten Is. Tech) of that title. I've seen Brk-Latin and it's nothing special. Saying it's number 1 in the city is like calling the Cubs the best team in baseball.
lol i remeber i used to worry so much about that shit, i got into tech with like a 520 or someshit like that. don't worry about it too much, if it doesn't work out just work at walmart and get a cheap apartment and you don't have to worry about anything.
You cannot simply get into the specialized high school in New York City. The SHSAT is not like any other state exam. The test is designed to select the "crème de la crème," so do not be disheartened if you cannot make it. The Ivy League is still four years away and if you believe in you, you could still make it. Good Luck.
I have add studies max 12 hours and not dedicated did not take the medication for that day and managed to get into tech and my score was high enough to get me into all of them except stuy I put tech second so no.
At the very beginning of that sentence I used the word "maybe" which, again, signals speculation. Thus, I repeat: Stuyvesant got caught, but that doesn't mean it's not happening at many other high schools, and yours MIGHT have a cheating problem as well that you're not even aware of.
just work harder on things that you need to work on. take prep courses if you can as well. and the SHSAT isn't just about studying hard... there's also luck .-. i didn't study for it as much as i was supposed to and i also sucked at math... but i still got in :D
Me, I still hate to read, I don't even like to sit through a slow acting movie, I like action movies, my favorite subjects in school became social studies and JROTC, liked social studies cause it was interactive. I liked JROTC cause I'm pro military and I loved the subjects they taught. Remember though, just cause you're book smart doesn't mean you're going to get anywhere in life.
I really want to go to Bronx science but it seems like im not doing as hard as in need to. Especially in math. I still have a while year ahead. Hope I get in :/
Bronx Science and Stuyvesant are "Name brand" school. The High School of American Studies at Lehman College is actually the best. It is ranked 6th in the state by U.S. News. Stuy is 9th and Bronx Sci is 10th.
Last year over 23,000 kids took the SHSAT & over 1,000 students had a perfect score. The majority of them chose Stuy, so the automatic cut off for Stuyvesant became 600 pts. For Bronx Science & Brooklyn Tech it was 590 respectively. That was before the cheating scandlal in June. There are 3 well known organizations that won't even include Stuyvesant in the ranking this year due to the 125 students who were caught cheating.
lol I study the day before the test and I got into Brooklyn Latin. For Laguardia, I was just winging it and I got in. I still have to choose what school I want to go now. Beacon, Laguardia, or Brooklyn Latin😂
Just do as many practice tests and questions as you can and check the answers. The more comfortable you get with the test questions and format, the better you'll do, guaranteed. Worked for me!
jokes on you guys but i got into bronx science wit a 477. how u ask,its its little thing called the discovery program. first group of people to have the program restart after 10 years.but the thing is i feel like i cheated the system.all u really needed to do was to go to the program and do the things they gave and well what you know, i guess ur in bronx science. no test nothing. (side note 9 of the 10 of us were asain)
