For millionaire parents who aren’t afraid to flaunt their wealth, a handful of ultra-exclusive, ultra-expensive schools are ready to take their money in a heartbeat.
Across all corners of the country, you’ll find high schools that charge well over $50,000, per year! That’s over $300,000 for 6-year high schools, and the kids haven’t even gone to college yet. Once we leave the US, that price grows even higher.
Where are these lavish learning institutions found? And what does such a high enrolment cost actually get you? Celebrity teachers? Private chauffeurs?
Ditch the textbooks for a minute and let’s find out.

You have to realize you’re paying that kind of money so your child BUILDS A NETWORK with other families who have businesses, are wealthy etc and their kids. Has very little to do with the education itself. A strong network of stable millionaires is far more valuable than an A+ level education in 99% of instances anyway.

My public school was once listed by US News and World Reports as one of the best in the country. We boasted a post graduation rate of higher education at 97%. We regularly sent students to Stanford, Havard and Yale. as well as all of the various military academies. We didn't have dorms or a 1 star cafeteria, but the parent sponsored activities included an advanced weight room. I feel very lucky that had such a varied and inexpensive education.

I find it frustrating that so many people equate being smart with having a great memory. That’s how we’re taught here in Asia. Rote memorization is king, but then we are also required to think outside the box. I mean it doesn’t hurt having memorized theorems and using them to answer an essay. What I mean here is that memorization is a crucial skill for advanced learning.

I teach at the private school my daughter attends. Though the curriculum and opportunities are great, the parents are a complete nightmare. You are threated to be sued weekly. Most teachers and administrators suck up to the parents that have the most money or who "donates" the new football field. Just because we work at a private school does not mean you get paid more. I have a Master's in math and science and I make $39k. Most of the kids are really sweet but those that have overbearing parents are a complete nightmare. One parent pushed to have her 6th grader in my college geometry course. He had NO background in geometry. I worked with that child everyday to try to het him caught up on the prerequisites but he didn't even know his shapes. That kid was steessed all because the parent wanted her kid in a higher math class. He even said he didn't want to be there.

I went to a pretty bougie boarding school on a scholarship and there were definitely some good aspects, like the lower student : teacher ratio that allowed for more individual attention. Overall, I think my experience was a good one, but I also saw a lot of negative aspects of the boarding school life. Many of the international kids barely got to see their families outside of summer break (assuming they weren't also enrolled in some kind of summer school). A lot of the international students also formed cliques based on country of origin and would ostracize students for hanging out with anyone outside of that clique. The school had to literally put on their application form that they were not a correctional school, because so many parents were shipping their "problem" children off to boarding school. We still had students that were well aware of the fact that they were there, because their parents didn't want to deal with them. There was a lot of pressure to go to elite colleges. Kids from regular families couldn't keep up with the spending habits of the wealthy students. The school was obsessed with creating the leaders of tomorrow, and if you weren't a state champion athlete, a straight A student, holding a leadership position within the school's student leadership structure, and involved in several clubs, it was treated like you weren't living up to your potential. The guys' side of the school was pseudo-military and had a lot of hazing issues. So yeah, having a three masted boat does not mean that an expensive school will automatically be better than a regular school.

I go to an all girls boarding school in Maryland and the way our detention and disciplinary system works is pretty numerical. So there’s two distinct infraction levels: Minor : 8 points Major : 16 points For example, a minor infraction would be being late to class, check in etc. A major infraction would be skipping check in, class or study hall, just to name a few. To be subject to a detention, you need to tally up a total of 16 points. You can do so by obtaining 2 minor infractions or one major infraction. Once you cross that threshold, you get a notification saying you have a detention which spans from 8 AM to 11 AM on a Saturday morning. After that your points are still logged in our school app as a record so when you reach a total of 16 points again you get detention once more. And it just repeats itself like that. It’s pretty easy to get detention here tbh

I think I could get a scholarship at one of these schools but at the schools I went to kids weren’t allowed to get ahead of their peers so I never got to learn as much as I could. I spend long periods without any school work because I had finished it already but the teachers never gave me anything else. The most that happened was I got put in a special maths class for 30 minutes once a week and we would just do worksheets with slightly harder problems on them and didn’t get taught anything new. It makes me angry that I could of gotten into a really good school or something if my schools had just actually taught me something.

I went to a super expensive military boarding school in the US. It was a very unique experience, and while the military school part sucked, the faculties and campus were very nice. The coolest part though was the fact the school had kids from over 30 different countries and 30 different US states. I have friends from the DR, Nigeria, Egypt, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Panama, Ukraine, Angola, Brazil, Turkey, and Kazakhstan just to name few. Still keep in touch with them till this day.

If your child starts a business, her network will be there. Even in normal high schools or universities, wise students build a strong network across different fields. Everyone sucks up to the best students & athletes, because you know they have the highest chances of being successful - & you could learn a lot from them. Expensive schools is just a level up of this network opportunity. You have to keep in mind, that to succeed in life you always have to seek the most successful person you know, & learn what you can from them. You'll be like a frog in a deep well, the top of the local food chain, but never getting out of the well. Oh and the curriculum can be superior too. Some of these schools go a bit too far. Remember, they have to sell their tuition to parents - many of whom have very high ambitions for their children, often unrealistic ones. Also, parents want to visit a school and see that their child will be comfortable and well taken-care of. So i don't think that these represent a standard that we should have in all schools. However, you are right that public schools in the USA vary far, far too widely. This is because (1) many states pay teachers absolutely terribly and teachers get burn out. (2) the local tax base (property tax, usually) is what funds education, leading to more affluent towns/cities being able to do more and pay more - far more - than poor districts. And that is a CRIME for public policy, but good luck finding a lawmaker who is willing to overturn that and risk irate wealthy parents.

You can achieve the same outcome as the Lang School by homeschooling (creating portfolios, subject themes, hand on learning, internships). That's pretty much what they did here. They took the homeschool model, sold it to a school and charged thousands for someone else that are not parents to teach it. But don't get too excited there thinking you could do the same thing. The powers that be have made it illegal for *you* to take your awesome homeschool model and teach other children that are not yours. It doesn't matter which school you attend or how expensive and it is . More resources you get lesser grit you have in your learning. A school with cheap fees and lower resources can also create smart minds.

Disagree. You cant compete if you dont have resources. For example when i went to a gifted elementory school they had a chemistry lab,Dance room ,band , Computers,a pool! Im from the hood. All we had and was a gym and auditorium in the same area thats it. I was doing fractions-These kids were already on algebra. I had science /biology. They were mixing chemicals in chemistry, I went home crying . Of course my grades were crap. I couldnt keep up. It was too much! I barely graduated. It was so embarressing to be one of the worst students. I went in 6th grade -middle of semester. These kids were already talking college and they didnt go high school yet.

@@1Skorpia those things can't give you critical thinking though. Those other kids had all this handed to them which makes it harder to learn how to use your mind yourself IMO. There's a serious amount to be said for the smarts you get from having to be street smart and figure alot of things out yourself.

Great and comprehensive video. Yes, these are fortunate children (some, I presume, on scholarship) to have such resources to gain and education, but, for the super majority who cannot afford such luxury, public school is the best alternative. Always a work in progress, it is still essential to our society.

I feel like they didn’t represent the best schools only the most expensive. All of the schools mentioned aren’t even in the top 20. Secondly, all of these schools are overpriced compared to many schools in the top 20 Phillips Exter and Andover, Choate, Deerfield, etc...

Poor kids need to work harder to get noticed so I don't think that's the focus of these schools. It's all about stimulating the kids' mind, if I had had this as a kid it would've certainly gave me a sense of purpose and more confidence. This is all kids with academic dreams can ask for.

It doesn't have to be a private school per se. My rich cousin goes to a public charter school in a wealthy county, and the facilities there are better than most private schools. The common differentiator is not private or public but wealthy or poor.

It's kind of sickening that only rich people can afford the proper education for their kids to become more rich people, while poor people have to work their ass off and are expected to work twice as hard only to be shamed twice as hard if they fail.

This isn't "proper education" though. It's excessive. A nice meal with quality ingredients is proper, it doesn't have to be $500/plate to be proper. Same with education.

I go to a school through financial aid that’s very similar to these. Sure they look great, but in reality, you only go for the name on your college applications. Schools like these are businesses that in my experience care more about their reputation than student education and well being
