I served three years on the USS Hornet CVS-12 working in the Navigation Dept. up on the bridge. Built in 1943, decommissioned 1970. 46,000 ton 842 ft. long. Top emergency speed 32 knots. We also did these extreme maneuvers, and they were impressive......I thought then. Fast forward about 40 years.. I was invited on board the 97,000 ton, 1,092 foot long USS Abraham Lincoln CVN-72 as a guest of the CO. We sailed from San Diego to Everette WA. on a four day test, sea trial and qualification run which included everything you see in this video plus several high speed runs, emergency stops and reverse running. For this old carrier sailor the only words that can explain what I experienced "stunning performance". And when they quote speed statistics as 32+ knots? Try adding about 10 Knots to that. We had a perfectly smooth sea off Oregon as we were heading north and performing one of the speed runs. There was a container ship ahead on the horizon off our port bow also going north. I don't recall exactly how long it took, but we passed from horizon ahead to horizon astern as if it was parked. Often wondered what that ship's captain was thinking.

@Deane Minister I'm not UMC, but I can answer that. 1) That bright blue water is full of air bubbles created by the screws when they turn fast enough to cause cavitation. 2) US Navy aircraft carriers do not have bow thrusters, but they do have 4 independent screws and 2 very large rudders.
@john5321
@john5321 4 года назад
@Deane Minister 1. What you are seeing is cavitation in the water, air bubbles entrained into the water by the propellers and the turn of the ship 2. CVNs (air craft carriers, nuclear) do not have bow thrusters 3. These turns are during sea trials after a newly built ship goes to sea (builders trials, final contract trials, and acceptance trials - when the Navy finally accepts the ship - do not confuse with commissioning). They are also performed after overhauls - no aircraft are embarked (stored onboard). The one aircraft you see is an empty hulk that is used for training and firefighting. The helicopter taking the pictures flies out from land. If i told you more ...well you know...good questions, regards PS I was onboard USS Enterprise and USS Stennis and USS Harlan County when we did trials like this.

Later in the war with the Fast Carrier Task Force (Task Force 38/58) the ship's got orders not to maneuver independently during attacks. There were too many ships in too small of an area to do it. Also the flak guns fired in prearranged zones to concentrate to the fire on the attacking planes. Evasive maneuverers would spoil it.

The Food Services Officer stormed in to scream/vent since it was during a midday meal and the tables on the main mess deck were not secured. Hence, you put fresh cooked food onto a painted steel deck and you have tables, chairs and sailors sliding port-to-starboard, back and forth as the rudder went hard-right, hard-left, hard-right, etc. Oh, that was one of those classic, memorable moments!

I served on both the pre-commissioning units for USS Nimitz (73-75) and USS Eisenhower (75-79) and went through these types of rudder testing. Did the high speed turns for hours and this video is toward the end of the testing. The testing started out with smaller turns and progressed to the larger turns.that is seen on the video. It made an interesting day in the sea trials,

In ‘73, the Enterprise was on West Pac and I was standing watch at the Starboard forward lookout position. The JOD ordered a turn to Port at too fast a speed. The helmsman (from my division) questioned the order twice trying to get the jughead to think about what he had just ordered. The JOD (getting pissed) issued the order again, so turn to port we went. I happened to be sitting on top of the rail, with my feet (thankfully) looped through the lower rail, when the turn began. I ended up leaning back, almost prone, hanging over the water. I found out later that everything that wasn’t tied down in the hangar deck went from port to starboard, quickly. Tools boxes all over the place, spilling tools; a real mess. I never found out what happened to the JOD, but always suspected he walked the plank around 0300 hrs or so.

It's difficult to imagine the size of this carrier from the video or just looking at technical data. Probably you wouldn't even see a dozen guys on water skis because this thing is just so BIG. I was once on the USS Nimitz in 1987. It looked big from the shore, it looked bigger coming nearer with a boat. And when you walk around on the flight deck with dozens of fighter planes then you get an idea just how BIG this is.

The Curious Sapien To be honest, the movie was far more fun than the game it was based upon...even in the 70s dropping quarter sized plastic pieces into a slotted plastic piece to see if you won was not very exciting. In fact, my four banger calculator was more exciting as a preteen in the 70s. But they certainly took a lot of extreme liberties in the movies (like what are the odds that the targeting director, radar, and positioning servos would still be operational on a ship decommissioned so long ago, not to mention in proper calibration, much less the rest of the ship remaining battle worthy).

Official release: Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) performs high-speed turns in the Atlantic Ocean. Abraham Lincoln is underway after successfully completing its mid-life refueling and complex overhaul and will spend several days conducting sea trials.
@federicobertagna1066
@federicobertagna1066 7 лет назад
Ultimate Military Channel is it just an impression or I see the entire ship in torsion? Especially looking at 0:21, runaway perfectly straight in front, the angle of the aft is higher than fore. Which I am sure happens, the turning forces are applied to aft and what happens to fore is just a final result. Structure is not infinitely rigid, makes sense; I saw inner structure of tanker bending on waves, I would like to see what happens on Nimitz during these maneuvers!
@Boomcheeks
@Boomcheeks 7 лет назад
Federico Bertagna I never noticed that until I saw your comment, and i can't decide if it is flexing or not. It's one hell of a good turning circle for something of that size and the strain on its structure must be huge, so I wouldn't be surprised.
@TakeDeadAim
@TakeDeadAim 7 лет назад
Optical illusion. The ship is most definitely not bending. Tankers experience much greater "hog" and "sag" issues due to the large unsupported(laterally and vertically)voids which the carrier does not deal with.
