Anyone else watch old footage like this and think to themselves. Somewhere out there is me. I'm 19 years old, car mad, clueless about the world. What was I doing on that day? - what would I, as I exist today, like to say to myself? (quite a lot, actually...). Out there are my grandparents, dead now, but probably watching the TV or shopping at the time.. Out there is the woman who - 15 years later - was going to be my partner in life. Out there somewhere is the world trade centre - and it has no idea what is going to happen to it. It looks like a nice day. I wonder what I had for dinner that night.
Wow what a memory trip. I was born in High Wycombe. 1st house I was born into was on London Road, opposite the water mill & the Rye, they knocked down those houses and tuned it into a carpark. But do remember my mum taking me over the road to go on the slides and swings in the late 70's early 80's. My dad worked at Ercols and I remember him walking to work everyday. Remember woolworths and mum using Woolwich Bank. Hamilton school was where I and sadly my recent late brother attended. I remember W G Hoar was where my late brothers 1st bike was brought from for his Christmas present, maybe even my mountain bike was too? Loved visiting blockbusters where the magnet centre is shown. Feathers got my interest as a kid😂😂😆 Secondhand City was massive but remember the old fishing shop that use to be next door to that shop. Who remembers under the cheese pot where they had a sweet market on sat mornings but also the rank smell of cheese wafting in the air nearby! 😂 Well there you go, fond memories...
I would just like to offer a big thanks for this video, as brought back some great memories for me, having been born and raised in and around High Wycombe area. I agree, in that allot has changed since however, some good and some not so good sadly. I was amazed at the lack of people on the streets in some shots, so I guess it was filmed early on a Sunday morning. I wonder what You Tube viewers will make of this movie in lets say a 100 years from now - Cant Wait!
Thanks for this video! I came to Wycombe as an 18 year old student in 1992 so this would have been my first impression of the town (still living here today having married a local girl)
The Good Old Days the Early 90s were a Magic times.. I trade now for then in a heart beat. Saddly this is as close as i can get... For Now. Nice upload.
Ty very much for bringing back beautiful memories "10:57 f h w" I use to work there while I was at school in my 4/5 years at brenchwood. Thanks again my beautiful high Wycombe what it use to be like.
Frogmore has changed so much it used to be clean and peaceful with not much activity. Now its dirty with potholes and full of crackheads and terrible drivers. Literally hell
Huge thanks for this. I was 22 when this was filmed and remember hanging out in bridge street car park at night will all my friends and their cars. I now live in another country and its so nice to look back at what I did and where I roamed. Thanks again.
2 years out of the local college, lived in around their for the next 18 years. My formative years, funny looking back, I visited about 5 years ago the whole town center has changed. I live abroad now and am still in touch with a handful of friends from back then.
Great to see this footage. I left Wycombe in 1992 aged 19. Lots of people here saying it's gone downhill - to be honest, back then everyone said the same, it was always considered a bit of a troubled town. But it had character. I remember all the pubs (Angel and Antelope were most popular, the Flint Cottage for gigs). The chocolate factory pumping cocoa fumes, The old gas tank rising and falling outside Loakes Park. Scorpion Records. The arcade on Bridge Street. The funny Chinese guy on Desborough Road with his amazing spring rolls. Club X with the naked raver. Good times.
I lived in Wycombe and both my daughters were born there. Moved to Marlow and now live abroad (London) coming back on 31/08 to see my old rugby club HWRC anybody have any news on Adam Stubbs his mother Margaret and her daughter Sarah? At the club I played alongside Curly bless him.
Was there as a student in the early 90s. Funny how much I have forgotten, but suddenly I’d spot certain shops or areas and it would all come flooding back.
Think the opening shot shows West Wycombe Ball. I lived in the town , Desborough Road, then up to Spearing Road. We left High Wycombe about 1966 . I attended Green Street Primary School, then Mill End Secondary school for boys. Wycombe Wanderers then played at Loakes Park, names like Len Worley ,Tony Horseman spring to mind, Don Walsh was the manager. I can remember the boating lake I think in the park called the Rye. Outdoor swimming pool, is it still there?,Sunday afternoons it was full of West Indians playing cricket. Think I can vaguely remember the WHO performing at the White Swan when they were on the way up.
It's called the Wycombe Swan theatre now and still does alot of popular shows etc. The outdoor swimming pool is still there and is now called the rye lido. The river rye does still have some old rusty boats floating at one end but I have never seen anyone in one. Lovely town
It was a beautiful town, a lot of places to go and see. Lovely locals but unfortunately it has become a drug ridden very small city type lifestyle. Police too busy doing nothing and a council too busy lining their pockets with over development grants being given to anyone and everyone. Ruined it.
The place has changed much in the 20 years we have lived in HW. Even more so since 1992. Therefore, it would be great if you could add some labels with a brief description of location. E.g. Frogmoor, View from top of Eastern Carpark, etc. That would help us identify where the footage is from. Thanks for the video, just the same.
I was surpised by how similar it looks. I was born in 1996 so didnt get to see it like this but the same buildings are there, just eden is the biggest change.
God I loved the 90's, retail bliss! Used to love doing the Saturday shop in Wycombe, pick and mix at Woolworth's, pop across the road to check out all the tech in Dixons!, crazy how much has changed in just 30 years, kinda boring having everything so accessible today by just a click of a mouse.
That nice flower bed looks pretty....shame some idiot wrecked it, turned it into a load of stupid fountains for noisy kids to play in, and then allowed it to go into disrepair prior to tarmacing over! Good old local government!
When I was at middle school, circa 1983, I had a teacher that would always lament the fact that the council took away the original fountain in frogmoor and replaced it with flower beds! No pleasing some people ;) I can't believe I actually remember that.
Nick g? Pembroke secondary, dehrams ave? I dropped in to see you at the printers i was back from france- that was old school printing in there. Im sure thats you!
wow i may have only finished my degree this year thus knowing nothing of wycombe really before going to uni in 2017 but damn its so weird looking at what has and hasnt changed in the last 28 years as of writing. To think eden would not be built for another 16 years and the building i did my degree in would not be built for 17 but out of curiousity was the big sainsburys built back then as one of the shots looks like where the sainsbury's should be and bought the right hight for the building roof too or was there something there before? The reason i ask is cos the sainsburys looks really damn modern only looking 15 years old at best
