Here's the problem with Rotten Tomatoes. I don't think most people understand how it works or how to perceive it correctly. Say a movie gets 90% on RT. That just means 90% of critics liked the movie, not that the average score people gave it was a 9/10. Realistically actually, movies with that high of percentages only have averages of scores like 7.5/10. So Rotten Tomatoes is kind of just a summary of people who thought it was above mediocre and people who just thought it was bad, and it's kind of a poor system.
@ImpressionBlend
@ImpressionBlend 5 лет назад
THIS. YES! So many people think that 100% on RT means a 10/10 rating, there is so much confusion about this. There is actually an average rating on RT that you can see if you click "more info" under the % ratings, I wish they would make it a lot more obvious.
@BrianDePalmaII

"I'm sure I'm going to name some your favourite movies and that's OK. The thing is horror is just about opinion, it's a subjective type of genre and we all like different things..." - Hawkinson, Sarah. 2019. If the horror community had 5% your mentality, rationalization and passion about horror and general movies criticism, we'd live in a much better place, all united by our perfect couple: horror & cinema. And it would be beautiful. Let's share the love about this genre.

I love Sleepaway Camp but I'm really surprised to hear it has a high rating anywhere because it's one of those campy exploitation films... I love how the character dispatches her (his?) victims, from the creepy cook getting scalded to the meanest girl in the camp being violated with a curling iron. I don't usually like anthology horror films but I did like V/H/S. I especially liked the one with the succubus lady killing the brodudes or the one where that killer in the woods can disappear or obfuscate himself from the camera. I always thought the Dementors were a rip-off of the ring wraiths anyway. A lot of Harry Potter concepts seem borrowed to me. I can understand getting tired of the Walking Dead's progression but that seems like a strange criticism, that they keep killing people and that it's more about the characters than the zombies. The comic series is the same way but the show does not follow the comics all that loyally: like for the longest time Rick is with Andrea and Michone with Ezekiel. It would be boring if they didn't kill people we care about. To each her own I guess...

The problem with rotten tomatoes percentage rating is that it doesn’t reflect a score out of 100. It actually just says how many people gave it a generally positive review. So if 100% of people gave it at least an okay kind of rating (like 6/7 out of 10), then it will be considered 100% fresh.

Rotten tomatoes percentage is worked out by how many reviews are rotten or fresh. If 30 critics rate a movie 5/10 or above, then it's fresh, and if 20 rate it less than 5/10, then it's rotten. In total that would mean there's 50 ratings, and 30/50 of them are fresh, which when put into a percentage is equal to 60%. Also, the reason why Last Shift got 100% is because it wasn't a popular film, and only 5 critics reviewed it on rotten tomatoes. Those critics only gave it 5/10, but because that is fresh on rotten tomatoes, it makes all five reviews fresh, which is why it gets 100%. The movies that you like, the ones that are more popular and maybe more mainstream, get lower ratings simply because there are more critics, such as rings which had over 107 ratings from critics, so the reviews less than 5/10 outweighed the reviews above 5/10. Hope this isn't too confusing!

D'Arcy Eads I know it’s probably too artsy fartsy for some people, but I like to understand the symbolism in movies, or rather movies that appear to be more than just what is happening on screen. Midsommer to me seemed to be about how vulnerable we can be in our darkest times, as well as how dark things can be in current situations. In Midsommer, her personal relationship was almost more toxic than the cults.

Drag Me To Hell was one i watched when i was much younger and thought it was atrocious. Being older now and able to understand what they were going for, I’m now able to appreciate the over-the-top, corniness of it. But definitely doesn’t deserve over a 90%

Revenge is amazing. Not so much as being good or enjoyable, not even a re-watch. But I was blown away by the style, the rhythm, the colors, just felt like I was watching something very fresh and exciting, out of the box, unpredictable.

In reply to your confusion about why people liked revenge: I can totally see what bothered you, these aspects just aren’t something that would keep me from enjoying a horror movie. I personally liked this film a lot for two reasons: a) I was excited for the whole run time of it and b) I’m a sucker for revenge plots in general and especially in the horror genre.

I’m just going to say that i LOVE the walking dead! But i know that it’s not everyone’s thing. I don’t blame people for stopping. But for some reason i just grow more and more attached with every episode. (Spoiler for season7) But i don’t understand why people are still so mad that they killed off Glenn in the show. That is where he died in the comic books and it was an amazing character introduction for Negan. People get so mad at the show, but STEVEN YUEN TOLD THEM HE WANTED GLENN TO DIE THERE. He understood the importance of his death, he knew that that is where Glenn’s story ends. If the actor was so passionate about Glenn going out there then i think people can stop being so upset just because he was a good character. That’s kind of the point 😂

blackandredteddybear to be fair I would recommend getting past the first season before judging it. It has gone downhill in the past couple seasons, but the newest season is redeeming aside from the fact that a lot of the severely important characters have left or been killed off. I can see how it’s not for everyone, though. It’s more drama than horror.

apparently it has not many reviews, so it is easier for all the reviewers to give a posititve rating (remember: 100% means all critics gave a positive rating, not a perfect one. In theory you could get 100% with an average rating of 6/10. That's why it is important to look at both numbers). The best 100% rating is for Paddington 2 which has 226 positive reviews. (The average rating is at 8.75/10). The average rating of Last Shift is actually only at 5/10.

I'm really not a fan of several parts of the Walking Dead but really dug seasons 4 through 6. You pointed out it's impossible to keep zombies interesting and scary for seasons, and that's 100% correct. What I love about the middle section is that's where it first changes focus, and is instead about how to rebuild and structure society of deeply traumatized people in a post-pocalyptic world. The politics and psychology of it all is fascinating to me. I don't think there's any other shows about this concept. Zombies largely aren't important anymore at that point and I remember a scene where Rick and Michonne take out an abandoned carnival full of like 100 zombies by themselves super easily. Seasons 7 and onward switch focus again to being about communities at war which lost me.

Yes, in the beggining was hard for me to get into it. And that's saying a lot since I am a big fan of The Haunting stuff, so I expected something alike... However this was pretty different. I will not lie, it took me a few days to get through the first 2 episodes :) I kinda forced myself, the beggining is just so user unfriendly it's a bit infuriating. But after that I started to like it... A lot. Now I'm curious what they have in store for us in the 2nd season :)

The issue with the Walking Dead is that while the people are evolving, and it's great, the zombies aren't. It's a show that started off as a genuine zombie show, but over time the zombies became a backdrop.

I love the walking dead (I’m rewatching it before season 11 comes out) and I wish they could go into how the walkers have changed over time (ex: in the first season they could do simple tasks like using rocks to break windows, picking things up, etc). Rewatching it, I really do like how the human conflict is central. The fact that main characters die is the reality of an apocalypse, and all the different kinds of humans that react to the end of days is so interesting to me.

I think if you view the zombies in walking dead less as the threat and more as the setting, it gets a lot better. You're right that the formula can't really work for horror TV because horror really thrives on characters being clueless. But in long form television, you can't keep your characters clueless for 4,5,6 seasons. It's human nature to adapt, and that's why I actually like the evolution of the interaction with zombies. In the first few seasons, the zombies are big threats, the primary enemy even. Moving on, we see the walkers being less threatening and more like a weapon themselves. Controlling herds, using them as wall defenders, covering them in metal so they can't be killed and unleashing them, etc. Now in the show they're in the stage of almost living harmoniously with them. The whisperers are super cool to me and represent the acceptance these people have for the world they live in. From season 5 onwards, the characters are settled so I don't think it repeats the pack up phenomenon so much anymore. The character drama did suffer a little in seasons 7-8, but season 9 was awesome in my opinion. I think it's a super interesting premise now that they're situated and rebuilding and learning to work together after years of savagery... I do agree the Negan arc got old as he just brutalized the main group with little respite, but luckily it picks back up even with main cast members leaving. We've still got a few OGs and lots of recurring characters that we've grown to like.

I had never paid attention to those so called: *MOVIE CRITICS.* As I always said, those are personal opinion from individuals who has different tastes in movies. Its like CHEF that are judges, some may like the food you cook, some may not, doesn't mean your foods are not good just cause a “chef” said so, as long as you customers comeback to your place and enjoy your food, you already succeeded. So screw the critics, is their personal opinion, it could be one guy or a bunch of them, I dont care. Enjoy what you like, that's it.

Every time I hear about Sleepaway Camp, all I hear about is the twist. I thought it was ok, didn't think it was one of the greatest movies ever. Maybe because I watched it ~35 years after it came out. If it wasn't for the twist, I doubt it would be nearly as popular as it is. That said, the twist itself just made me go "... ok." It really had zero impact on the story, and I never understood those "twists." Also nice to see someone else who didn't care for Revenge. I had so many problems when watching it that I couldn't get over.

I feel like so many people dislike good horror movies simply because people think it’s good... it’s like they think going against the grain immediately makes you cool or “smart”. For instance, when people say they don’t like the babadook, the only reason I hear is “it’s boring” which is... boring. Not really a good criticism.

9:19 This is how I use websites like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. I first search for a movie that I'm interested in and look at the score to get a general idea of how the majority felt about the movie. Then I will click on and skim a good review, a medium review, and a bad review (obviously varies depending on whether there are good reviews/bad reviews etc.). Approaching the movie this way should give me a good idea of whether I would like the film because I read perspectives from someone who loved it, someone who thought it was ok, and someone who hated it. I can also compare and contrast points made within reviews. Sometimes good reviews will acknowledge points made in bad reviews (which gives credence to the criticisms made in the bad reviews) or vice verse. Now, sometimes there are movies that I want to go into blind so I won't read opinions from critics. TL;DR I think Rotten Tomatoes is useless if you ONLY look at the score. You gotta read a couple of reviews to understand perceptions of the film. It's about *why* people liked/disliked a movie. It doesn't matter whether the majority liked it or disliked it in the abstract.
