Love the interesting technique of using a newspaper to wrap the play around to create a hollow body and legs . Guess my question would be when you fire it does the paper just burn up ? I love the bull he's very realistic. As the great solid feel that all Bulls have. Very much in posession of their space.
Hi Laura, the newspaper combusts in the firing leaving a cavity. This allows you to keep the clay a consistent thickness so there are no problems in the firings :)
Hi Jorge, thank you for your question: yes the paper combusts in the firing leaving a cavity so no need to hollow out. This creates a lot of smoke around 280℃ and the kiln room will need to be ventilated for an hour.
Hi Jane, Yes you are right, the piece is not fired- not until I finish sculpting it. I use a fortified type of porcelain called T'material to which I add paper pulp resulting in paperclay :)
N.E.M Productions, could you tell me what the advantages of using paper clay compared to simple clay are? Your mastery is inspiring! Thank you for sharing! Do you ever use metal armatures? And when the newspaper burns in the oven, does a sculpture need a hole somewhere for ash or does the newspaper burn down leaving no trace at all?
