Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men.

Most sports are easy enough to be able to play and understand the rules but to be able to compete requires skill, talent and hardwork. If I have to pick which game can be easily played by most people without too much explaining, it's gonna be sprint.

Meet Larry Young of Columbus, Ohio. Bronze medallist, Olympic 50km walk in 1968 and 1972. His belief was that, to succeed, 'a walker needs the strength of a gymnast, the grace of a dancer, and the endurance of a marathon runner. In the light of this, no race walker should ever feel inferior to other athletes.'
@pacerbiy36
@pacerbiy36 7 лет назад
+StuC5 The whole idea of this event makes no sense. Let's find out who is the best at moving slowly? Why don't we give out medals to whoever can hop on one leg the fastest. It should be simple, see who can get from point A to point B the fastest.
@TheMattHardyFan21
@TheMattHardyFan21 5 лет назад
@@pacerbiy36 you dont understand the event, is not about quickness, is about endurance and selfcontrol, if you would ask somoene to see who can run without stopping for 50km, and the bodies would pile up like flies, the reason the rules are like this is to make the sport safer to the competitors, this maybe isnt a marathon but it requires its own set of abilities, not everyone would be able to walk for 50km at top speed without ever stop touching the floor, its actually pretty difficult I invite you to try it, and you will find a new respect for this men

If you slow the video down to 0.25 using the settings icon you'll see that EVERYONE is cheating -- including the winners, and they start cheating right at the start line.
@StuC5
@StuC5 7 лет назад
Wrong. They may be in rule breach, but very few deliberately cheat. At the cadence they walk, most top walkers can't feel whether they're on the ground or not. They just go for it and hope they are (or, at worst, hope they're not seen by judges if they're not.) The rule says that judging must be done with the naked eye, not cameras. If walkers are seen to be in breach, they're red-carded. Three reds and they're out. There are no sports in which players don't go close to the rules' edge (and over it) by trying too hard, and there's always a penalty or sanction for that. That's not cheating.
@blackavar
@blackavar 7 лет назад
You don't know the mindset of the runners to make a statement about their intent to cheat, so it's irrelevant. Leaving the ground breaks the rules, and is therefore cheating regardless of intent. "Oh the football player didnt INTEND to step out of bounds, he was just trying SO HARD, so lets not call that penalty". Stupid.
@gordono672
@gordono672 3 года назад
@@blackavar when you slow it down you usually have a hard time seeing if they cheat. And when it's at regular speed you have an even harder time. It's like basketball fouls- lots of subjectivity.
@blackavar
@blackavar 3 года назад
@@gordono672 It really, really isnt hard to see the cheating. You can easily see both feet off the ground just by randomly hitting pause. After even a short time you'll catch the right moment where you see it. This is a mockery of sport.
