Hey everyone! I want to explain a couple things before you comment! 1. I recorded a Sohyang video and put a lot of time into it. It was taken down by a Korean network because of a copyright claim. In order to avoid that happening again, I was advised to pause about every 30 seconds or so. If you want to hear the song with no pauses, feel free to watch the original. 2. I am a voice teacher/coach. Meaning, I am here to explain what Sohyang is doing with her voice. So I pause a lot because she has many great vocal moments and I want to discuss them all. Thanks y’all 💙 :-)
Excellent reaction. I really enjoy how much you underscored Sohyang's mix voice - and she sure is a master of it. It's also noteworthy that you pointed out her dipping her body. Someone described Sohyang as a full-body singer. Your observation truly highlight that point. Sohyang's uses everything at her disposal for the desired delivery of the song. Nice to see you again.
Sohyang vid just released, the last in this years 'begin again korea' series where various artists went out into public area's & work places, basically busking, with guitar/piano, to cheer up the korean people during these difficult times. If you want to hear yet another side to sohyang then check out her performance of 'misty' at 'begin again korea' & also her performance of 'i will always love you' from the same programme, but another venue'(she sings 1st part acapella & continues with minimal piano.even her fellow performers were staring at her with mouths open) she is one of those rare singers that can actually 'deliver' amazing vocals in such an informal setting such as busking
Go for Vimeo to watch it. You need a better speakers. I preferred her sing in Korean language than other languages. She can express better with emotion. Her main purpose is to sing to comfort people not go for fame and wealth.
It is a traditional Korean song but she arranged the song so much that it is a totally different song. But Koreans can still feel the same emotions. Anyway it is a beautifully arranged and performed by Sohyang.
Some reax to your reax: 1) You might be the only reactor ever not to mention the violinist! 2) Everyone loses their mind over the Bb5 passage but I 'm so happy you flagged 12:49 because those two flips into headvoice and then back down seamlessly to mix are my personal favorite moments in this performance. 3) The mention of her physically dipping into that one passage is a good catch - I have always marveled at how athletic she is in her singing. She always has a solid base and core while using the rest of her body to tell the story. Finally - she's quite fluent in English for when you do eventually meet. I'll pay to watch a duet for sure!
*Arirang* is the most-beloved Korean folk song. It’s believed to be first sang over 600 years ago, and passed down from generation to generation. No one knows the exact meaning of Arirang but it embodies the spirit of the people of Korea for centuries. Arirang represents the suffering and tribulation (Arirang 'Hill') overcome as people and the nation. If we’re together as one holding hands, we can make it over the hill. The original Arirang is considered an "unofficial national anthem" *Arirang Alone* is a modern adaptation (released in 1990) of the original song written in the hope of reunification of Koreas. It’s a song of hope and peace. It tells a fantasy of the Island of Dokdo floating in the East Sea all alone singing Arirang. If Dokdo sang Arirang, alone in the Eat Sea, would North and South reunite?Dokdo is islets centrally located between Mount Baekdu (in northern border of North Korea) and Mount Halla (in Jeju Island, South Korea). Let’s ride a boat together from Baekdu and Halla. When we dock our boats at Dokdo, we’ll witness a new dawn together. The songwriter’s parents had to leave two sons and a daughter in North Korea during the war. His father’s dying wish to him was “when Korea reunite, go find your older brothers and sister and tell them that their parents did not abandoned them”. Where the audience sings along is where Sohyang incorporated the original Arirang lyric and melody.
This song began 600 years ago, mainly about pain, sorrow of people who lived through difficult times . The word 'Arirang' itself is a symbol of Koreans' spirit, and it's not known what the word itself means. Koreans have an emotion called 'HAN', which refers to emotions such as pain and sorrow etc, and it's difficult to describe all of 'HAN' in words just as it's difficult to describe the 'SOUL' of black people in words. The Korean name for Korea is 'Han Kook', and many words contain 'HAN'. This song is a modern reinterpretation of the wishes for the reunification of the divided South and North Korea.
You need to check out her version of Misty (there are videos of the DMC Jazz festival or the most recent one at beginagain korea). It's technically on point and so beautiful. No high notes, just technical perfection. :) and yes, she can mix higher. She mixed a C6 and C#6 in Lean on me (with Kirk Franklin) or in Lean on me Live with Michael Bolton. (better quality) :)
@@JonathanESmithOfficial I think she perfected "Misty" in her latest version on the show "Begin Again". I personally thought all her previous versions including at the DMC Jazz festival, the violin and jazz band overpowered her voice. In the most recent rendition her vocals was delicately accompanied by just the piano as in the beautiful original version by Ella Fitzgerald. Please download the link asap before it's removed. Also, be very careful with copyright with JTBC as they are very aggressive at blocking all her new English covers. Safest approach would as others have suggested is to get permission directly from JTBC to use the video for "commentary and education purposes". Some vocal coaches have lately been successful in getting permission from KBS. Would love to see your vocal analysis of "Misty" even with the wait...it's worth the wait! If all fails, just enjoy Sohyang's amazing rendition of "Misty" on your own time. Good luck! 💕 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uyje5JaPH8c.html

Mr Smith, you are good at feeling the things we feel the same. But there are a lot of people who are focused too narrowly and occupied with their prejudices. I hope you will continue your reviews with your own way. I wish all the good things in life.
Love your reactions a lot :-)) try something a little different by SoHyang! This is a song she wrote, it’s called, “ Dream”! As a side note her nick name among , family and friends is, Dreamer! The song has a bit of a jazz feel to it! She shows more of her range and a fun, sassy side to her! Crazy notes up to D6 at the end ! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n71eIWRmEtY.html

Stephen Pitt one of my Sohyang videos got a copyright strike so I have to be careful what I post of her. This is also why I pause every 25-30 seconds or so.
“Too much stop and strange stop point” made me thought you didn’t feel fully. I’m sorry. But I appreciate for your choice about So-Hyang. ^^ I can understand why you were afraid of copyright. But most reactor’s stop point was very good even though they experienced same situation. Moreover you didn’t need to be afraid of copyright about this KBS version in comparison to any other So-Hyang’s Lives. I will visit to your channel whenever you react So-Hyang. Thank you. ^^
