Whem I came back from 'NAM in 1970 I was 21 years old and I spent several years hitchhiking around northern Cali and southern Oregon. Great places and great times and great people. From Fort Bragg, Mendocino area to the Redwoods . . . Medford, Grants Pass to Mount Shasta and Redding it seemed like paradise. Can't believe how built up it was around Clearlake area. Glad I could enjoy it before it became what it is now. Enjoy your travel videos so I don't have to go there !! Keep up the good work Russ

35 years ago when I was 35, I took a 1 month vacation from N E Ohio to Southern California-just n of the Golden Gate to Lassin area and back zig zagging all the way. Thanks for taking me further north. Missed n California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. All the other 48 were on motorcycle at Motel 6's and KOA's. Pulling of the roadway is so much easier on 2 wheels. 👍👍

I too used to bike-pac long before they called it adventure biking. Sleeping bag, tent, backpack bungie'ed to the tank and seat. You beat me though. I only did the western states. I wouldn't trade those memories for anything. You see the world different from the back of a two-wheeler. You're in it. Not looking at it,.... if that made sense. Cheers.

My husband and I travel up Hwy 1 , I think it was 2006, beautiful scenery along the Pacific Ocean! Absolutely beautiful!! We went up to Grants Pass then came down 80 and went to Lake Tahoe. But, we don’t travel anymore, he is blind, so I travel with you Russ from my Lazy Boy chair! Thank you!!🙏🏻 be safe out there!!🙏🏻🙏🏻

Yay! Everyone should see the tallest living things on earth at least once.The size is jaw-dropping and smell of redwoods stay with you for life I think - me anyway. Stayed at the koa benbow more than once too. And camping in the avenue of the giants. Lots of summer trips to the redwood empire, Oregon coast and a couple times,... all the way into Canada. Thanks for doing what many of us can't. Another good one here. Cheers. 👍

Unless you turned off of 20 onto 53, you didn't go through Clear Lake, you instead went through Clear Lake Oaks.

The town is Clearlake (one word) - the lake is Clear Lake (two words). Correct about the turn off on HWY 53 going to town o Clearlake. Nice trip on HWY 16 & HWY 20.

Hey Russ, happy Friday! "Right before the heat..." is right! It's gonna be scorching up there next week. I've only driven past the southern end of Clear Lake, it's nice to see the eastern shore. Looks like the algae bloom is still going with the water being so green. I had to smile at 19:43: I wonder just how many carved bears there are on that stretch of road, probably in the thousands, I would guess. The Grandfather Tree is amazing, I need to check it out next time I'm up there. There are so many unique giants in those forests, one of my favorites is the Corkscrew Tree in Prairie Creek Redwoods. I'm curious to see in the next episode if you stop at the State Park Visitor Center to see the famous "Travel Log" RV from 1917. Until then, happy trails!

On the side of 101 is isolated parts of former 101. 10' wide lanes at 65mph,,, those were the days. Visit them sometime.

I love that part of California. We lived in Arcata when my husband temporarily worked for 3 months in Eureka on loan from his home office in Southern California decades ago. Beautiful places! I also liked the smaller lake (I think it is Blue Lake?) on 16 but near 101. Pretty green blue lake unlike Clear Lake. Cool you lived in Sacto. Russ. Go Hornets!

Now this brings back some memories. My parents and I took a road trip in 1975 through Redwood country, but we were heading south, going from Portland via Eureka on our way home to Phoenix. I remember we stopped at a cool little store that looked a lot like the store at the Grandfather Tree. Wonder it that was where we stopped, or if there are other little stores like it

Clear Lake is the oldest natural lake in the northwest. 480,000 years as it sits. 4-5 million years in the area, but with many changes over that period of time. Pomo inhabited the lake area for approx 11,800 years. I prefer driving the Hwy 20 northshore route, but Hwy 53 is also nice with the vineyards. For years, Lake County was voted the cleanest air in the US.

Hey Russ.. Beautiful area. But, it's California, I don't do California or the West coast. Too Expensive. I traveled it all back in the 80s and 90s. Oh. Your camera is just lose. Fold a small piece of paper and place it in the camera mount. It will usually keep it from rattling. Your bike also has a low growl under power. It may be inevitable and part of the electric motors function. Good luck

Clear Lake was nasty back in the 70's, the sewage from all the houses was getting in the lake. It was full of algae and carp.

Hi Russ!!! Happy travels to you. I'm looking to purchase a good dash cam. Would love to catch bad guys in the act of messing with my car and the others who smack into me in the parking lot.
