The instructor introduces horizontal and vertical alignment of the highway design process. This video presents geometric relationships and the nomenclature necessary to understand the concepts of highway alignment. Conceptualized and real-world examples are displayed to explain the procedures. The instructor, Daniel Findley, is a licensed Professional Engineer, focused on Transportation Engineering. He has a PhD in Civil Engineering from NC State University and is a Senior Research Associate at the Institute for Transportation Research and Education and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Construction and Environmental Engineering at NC State. Very helpful, You are an amazing teacher after searching a number of videos on RU-vid and most of them wasted our time you taught the concepts in a very precise and directly to the point. I wish we would have such teachers in our institutes, Most of them try to make us grade machines instead of giving us concepts.

Yes, you can have sections without a horizontal curve, which can be called a "tangent". In these sections, the radius is essentially infinite (though in practice, no road is perfectly straight).

To the extent possible, they generally are (the shortest path is always a straight line) - however, many things may need to be avoided, including: homes, water (lakes, rivers, creeks....), forests, mountains, businesses, etc.

A recent video I posted shows three common perspectives - plan, profile, and cross-section. The profile view allows you to see the vertical alignment.
