"Highway of Tears"

Since the late 1960s, at least forty young women have disappeared along the “Highway of Tears” - a 500-mile, single-lane stretch of roadway in northern British Columbia. Shrouded in mystery until a recent Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) special investigation linked DNA from one of the vanished victims to a deceased American criminal, these cold cases reveal sweeping crimes: kidnapping, rape, torture, murder, and the disposal of human bodies.
Aboriginal communities have experienced the brunt of the brutality: dozens of their women have disappeared along the highway, victims of not only murderous predators, but of a pervasive, systemic racism that keeps them marginalized on impoverished reservations. First Nation leaders and activists contend there has been little interest in further investigating the crimes and in apprehending their killers.
Narrated by TV Star Nathan Fillion ("Castle", "The Rookie"), Matt Smiley's award-winning documentary originally aired on Netflix in Canada and vividly portrays the personal stories of the victims’ families. It explores how generational poverty, high unemployment, and endemic violence in their communities contribute to these tragic outcomes.

In August 2019 I left Vancouver island. It was about 1am when I was on the highway, I wanted to stop and use the restrooms along the roadside.. but this black car pulled up with 2 men. I decided to wait, then they wouldn’t leave. Even after 15 minutes. They just stood on the side of their car smoking? Anyway, I left. Guess what?? They caught up with me 5 minutes later. They followed me for an hour, but I didn’t pull over until I had to gas up, during the busy times! That was terrifying. They weren’t just following me, they were keeping up. After I seen them come flying in behind me, I slowed down and they realized. Slowed down ahead of me, a couple vehicles were catching up. There was a break of them following, so I tried to stay with the vehicles and motioned that I was being followed… the vehicle stayed with me. It was a mom with a van , I cried when I realized she slowed to follow. Imagine someone walking…? It still doesn’t feel real. They’d slow when I’d slow, speed up when I did. Surreal.

Not just Canadians. The fact that there needs to be safe & affordable Transit on that road is inevitable. Every vulnerable person needs to understand they DON'T GO ANYWHERE W/ STRANGERS or creepy situations. I taught both my boys this starting at age 3. YES, 3. My younger knew to inform me about a guy who he & his friend thought was n@ked, but bc of the window he was at, they could only see from his waist up. The guy gave several reasons as to why he'd call 2 10yos to him. Then, 2 yrs later he told me another guy gave him the creeps. He drove Transit, so his uniform had badges, which younger kids could take to mean Police. He'd hand out $1 Bills to the kids frequently & invited them in to watch movies & play videos, which my son already knew was a no way in hell! He had a cellphone (w/ no internet access, he wasn't old enough for that, just text & calling) so I could keep a better eye on him & he could call me. One day I had a strange feeling so I called & asked him where he was. He was on his way to the corner store. W/ what money? The creepy guy gave him $5 for good grades... NO. I told him to take it back, blame me, then come & talk to me. I assured him he wasn't in any trouble. When he came to me I was informed the guy HAD THE GAUL TO INVITE MY SON IN TO PLAY VIDEOS!! I went around & warned several parents about him. Manager said she couldn't evict, he didn't do anything wrong. I told her to move her daughter into the complex, then see if she'd feel the same way. The sad thing is you've gotta teach children to protect themselves. & in today's world, if you can afford a watch or cellphone that allows you to know where your child is at all times, GPS, they're worth it. I had the tracking on my son from 12-18. 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛

I agree & I think the RCMP should be forming a Nationwide "Vulnerable Persons" Task Force & it should include some civilians. RCMP & some City Police Force's have lost alot of the public's trust. I can instantly think of 5 cases that the victims lifestyles were a factor IMO in making them "easy prey". I AM NOT PASSING ANY TYPE OF CRITICISM OR JUDGEMENT ON ANY VICTIMS OR THEIR FAMILIES" Highway of Tears victims have been predominantly Indigenous peoples & due to remoteness of that area of BC it wasn't uncommon for people to hitchhike etc. Also due to the horrible way Indigenous peoples had been treated for centuries, they lived more vulnerable lifestyles. Robert Picton preyed on vulnerable sex trade workers & these disappearances were originally blown off by VPD as part of a transient lifestyle. Bruce McArthur preyed on gay men in the Toronto area. These victims' sexual orientation made the more vulnerable & IMO the police appeared to downplay their disappearances as being more transient as a part of their lifestyles. Jeremy Skibnicki was just found guilty this morning for the murder of 4 Indigenous women in the Winnipeg area. Again IMO these young women's race & lifestyle choices appeared to initially play a factor in the investigations into their disappearances. Clifford Olson preyed on kids/teens & some of these beautiful souls were more vulnerable due to their life at home. A person's race or lifestyle choices SHOULD NEVER BE A FACTOR IN ANY LE INVESTIGATION. Neither should the fact that there could be multiple Police Force's involved in each case. That may have been an issue at one time but for decades now everything is computerized so IMO that's just a scapegoat excuse! And if RCMP/LE were to ever form a taskforce for these type of cases, it needs to have civilians on the task force because some of the blunders that have been made have eroded the public's trust in RCMP & City/Municipal Police Force's. And I would gladly offer to be a part of this type of task force. May ALL THE VICTIMS who are our Angels now continue to RIP& know you are not forgotten.❤💔

some of these ladies are talking out of time pressure from the show's producers and she was rambling off the top of her kidneys without putting much thoughts into it as she was very emotionally affected. Why is it that young women feel the need to hitch a ride with truck drivers is a social mystery, a delicately curious phenomenon that I myself cannot fathom. Young women who feel that need to exercise their independence and go on a solo hike on their own across the country to me have maybe thrown caution to the wind with their naive "sense of trust"

Instead of building malls here and there on some reserves build a transit system that would transport the Indig. people in and out of the reserves. So they can access the neighboring towns for post secondary education, jobs and other self improvement institutions. OR the Indig. could use the RENT revenue from the malls to build and maintain their own transit system. Just saying.(the gov doesn't pay me for my thoughts).

They should build casinos on their land. They do it here where I'm at, Seattle, Everett and outskirts, on the reservation. Big , true and real casinos. They started small but now they make enough and have built huge ones. The tribe manages them. They pay every tribe members health benefits, employs them as poker dealers etc. Also, every tribe members gets like $6,000 every 3 months. They put it right back into the tribe. White man lured them in with liquor back when, and swindled them. Took all they had. Now they offer gambling back in return and make a ton doing it.

It's hard to put into words how pitifully small the amount of money a bus service would cost compared to the amount of money that gets sent to Ukraine or that corporations get in tax breaks. Some of the poorest countries in the world have high speed rail, literal bullet trains. The idea that BC can't afford buses is a joke. Hell, the money the police get to fail to investigate these cases could probably pay for it.

My sister was a true crime buff & used to follow alot of the True Crime creator's on here. But she found out that Once Upon A Crime Time creator Tommy Jude was planning on doing an ongoing series , using the title "Highway of Tears" & just the first episode would be about a BC/Canada case & then all the fillowing episodes would be only cases throughout the USA, with each episode being about a case from each state. She got quite upset & has some harsh words with Tommy Jude for using a title that has become almost sacred to the families & friends & Canadians in general in the ingoing hortor of MMIWG, because she felt he was using it as "click bait" & that just further victimized the victims. It upset her emough that she refused to watch any true crime shows anymore. I hope to find her some good Canadian ones to follow .

It seems like maybe the tribes need to organize & set up a transport shuttle system of their own. Maybe even with armed security. It would be fair of the government to help financially. Maybe something similar to uber, but tribe owned so it doesn't turn into the predatory model uber turned into. Public transit loses money, even in a big city, so it would need some sort of crowdfunding, tax, grant, or subsidy. But it shouldn't be impossible. Folks need a safe way to handle business, even when they dont have money.

When I see all the transfer payments paid to Quebec and Ontario I shake my head. These communities have improper transportation between communities. I see our east coast suffering unemployment with the devastated fisheries. I see northern communities with out proper plumbing or water, no proper roads into their community. Our northern territories suffer from a lack of funds. Quebec has billions of dollars in surplus and I think what is wrong with this picture. These communities don't have proper representation in our government. If all of Canada votes yes and Ontario and Quebec vote no, the rest of Canada looses. I come from a rich province Alberta and I believe we should pay transfer payments to help our country. I don't believe we should separate, we are stronger together, but I feel we are misdirected as to what our priorities should be. I am of white ethnicity and have been guilty of too much prejudice through my life, I am guilty even if it was secret about it sad to say. I catch myself fighting, striving to be a better human being. I do better at 68 years but I still catch myself in wrong thinking sometimes. Just a thought

As a woman, i think these women have to be careful. Not hitchhike, especially alone. And not trust strangers of all genders. A couple of years ago i was stuck in Prince George for a month waiting for repairs on my mo/ho. As i waited in several parking lots i was approached by 3 Indig. women at 3 different times asking me for a ride to Prince Rupert and Vanderhoof. The one to Vandhf even wanted to pay me to take her there. I was going south anyhow. It's that easy to get into the wrong vehicle. Just saying 😮

Victim blaming is wild, perhaps MEN should just not SA, r*pe, or murder us. That might really help 🤔

@seskafuzen4616 yeah really so stay there wi' zero employment, education, healthcare, b/c we r responsible for MEN harming us. Women should b absolutely free to live our lives, men should stay home!I'd they can't manage not to SA, r*pe or murder. Please STOP victim blaming & judging women for our own assaults & worse ffs

Very well done!! question, Has Justin Trudeau done anything on an inquiry? He's been a PM for a 9 years already, coming closer to how long Harper was a PM..

People are still going missing in the lower main land and well all over. Im sad when i see new posters being put up . Not just women but men also. I always warn people that i meet dont trust anyone if you dont know them. Always remain vigilant and find safer transportation. Being under the influence is the hardest part cause it puts most in vulnerable situations. Good to see some familiar faces from Prince george maybe i'll return someday soon. Well done with the making of this film. bless everyone who lost someone. Take care.🫡

Not interested in the sob stories about how we welcomed young aboriginal kids into our societies. Nobody forced them to go to these schools. They were built out of charity, to give them a chance at life outside the res, and to keep them from feeling marginalized.

@timdoerksen9893 Which side of the border do you live on as in which Country?Texas is in the United States. This is in Canada. They have no access to Othram or to any of our other labs.We have enough crimes to solve let alone those of other countries.Don't get countries confused.Buy a map and learn geography.

It's not unusual that Canada uses USA'S doctors, labs, forensic experts etc etc. Or the other way around if there is some specialty not available in our own country or their specialty is more advanced.

An apology isn't good enough! You owe those who suffered your ignorance, your lust, your cruelty, money. Shame on all the leaders of Canada and the US for the atrocities you forced upon these proud peoples.

While it is awful, I dont like vilifying 'nameless faceless government ogre' for decisions made 125 years ago by people no longer alive. Its imperative to acknowledge it though. I do also think its extremely important for those currently in charge to do everything possible to support these communities so they can succeed now.

The best part is that there isn’t even a racial element to any of this. It’s just highlighting the dangers of hitchhiking and the fact that these tribes don’t feel like doing anything to protect these women; like allocating money for a regular shuttle service

How can someone and government be so mean to such a beautiful people!! I’m a white man and I find these atrocities appalling. These women are beautiful and should be treated like treasure because they are. Everything about their culture fascinates me and I mean that in the most sincere and respectful way. I’m a white man and the atrocities done to these people are terrible and wrong. These crimes need to be solved and the people punished. The government needs to do the right thing for these people as a whole. I live down in Georgia and I have heard of this highway of tears a lot and have watched everything I can find. I apologize for anything my people have done in the past. The school and treatment of these people was and is point blank wrong period!!!
