Sadly wind makes a massive difference with EVs. 8m/s is just shy of 30km/h. So if you are doing a steady 110km/h with a straight 8m/s headwind it is the equivalent of driving at 140km/h or if it is a tailwind it is the equivalent of doing 80km/h. The rolling resistance will still be the same regardless of the cars speed. And we all know the massive difference in consumption if doing 80km/h or 140 km/h... Even if it's a full sidewind you'll still have a significant increase in consumption as the steering input to counteract the wind will be a significant force. In an ICE it is all masked massively by the initial inefficiency that you are heating up the engine and blowing heat out the exhaust.

Why is everyone freaking out about consumption? It’s WINTER!!
@volvo_kristian
@volvo_kristian 4 месяца назад
Not freaking out. Just hoping for better efficiency. There's other cars with better efficiency under worse conditions than this. So personally I was hoping and expecting slightly lower consumption. Even if the speed was "high".

It’s being tested in the mids of winter. Somewhere like the UK where it hangs around 5-15*C I’m sure it will perform a lot better

What a good channel this was!👍 High consumption compare to Megane e-tech for example. Do you think 18 inch get better range and noice/road comfort? Tack från Malmö😊🇸🇪

6:50 TBH, what they should do is make it possible to permanently turn off this ridiculous driver alert BS, as well as the speed alert, instead of having to do it every single f***ing time you start the car 😳👈 Anyway you are right for calling out, Volvo on their obvious mistakes. Thanks for your videoes. They're much appreciated 👍

What happens if you tape over the driver monitors (the little panel behind the steering wheel)? Does it beep even more or would that be a permanent "toggle off" for the driver alert?
@volvo_kristian

It will beep if you block I've Tried it, and was beeping several times with a certain time frame apart. So easier to just turn it off.

Hello Kristian, did you notice a massive difference in comfort between the 20 inch and 19 inch tires on the EX30?
@volvo_kristian
@volvo_kristian 4 месяца назад
Surprising enough no. Minimal difference. So I wouldn't have any doubts myself about going 20" for summer setup. Both cars were running winter tires, and they are generally softer. With that said. If you primarily want comfort then 19" are the best choice.

Hi Kristian. Does any of two models that you have already tasted had “heat pump”? Interested how it may improve a range.

The efficiency is bad, french youtuber had even higher consumptions near 28kWh average, 32kWh peak, driving on flat and dry highway at legal 130kmh, really poor

Do you think that Volvo will come with an update to get a better range? I don't understand how Volvo can say the WLPT is much higher.
@n0b0d1r
@n0b0d1r 4 месяца назад
Well that is explained by looking at how WLTP tests are conducted. For example, the avg. speed is about 46km/h and the test is conducted in a room with a steady 23 C temperature and AC/heating is turned off for the car. It would be a quite unrealistic to assume that the car would reach the same range or consumption on highway speeds in winter time in the Nordics. However, I've seen people reach very good consumptions and range estimates on the EX30, especially when driving at slightly lower speeds - even in near-zero (celsius) temperatures. Just check the other range test video from Volvo_Kristian with the Single Motor Extended Range where the range and consumption were quite alright. In my country, there are no places where you could even legally drive faster than 120km/h and most bigger roads have a max speed of 100 or 80km/h.
@volvo_kristian
@volvo_kristian 4 месяца назад
I see someone have replied regards to the WLTP. So won't comment more about that. With that in mind I think/know Volvo will push out updates that will optimise the powertrain.

highway/motorway is not optimal for EV's. It never has and never will be. Wind and temperature is also against it, so considering the relative small battery I would call it "as expected". It will most likely do 500+ km in warm weather city driving and this is where all EV's shine.
@SWR112
@SWR112 4 месяца назад
This no buttons or screen right in front will end with new safety regulations to come in to the EU 2025. If you want five star satay the car needs buttons for common functionality out with any screen interaction that they feel is distracting drivers. Common sense prevails. As for the Volvo they will still be calibrating the range estimate. You don’t have to ask about the wind look at the flags at the end when your charging😂 it’s blowing a hoolie as we call it in Scotland. Low temp winter driving, windy hardly surprising to taken a hit in range. I’d be disappointed if it didn’t get near 300 miles long range in summer.

Volvo should make a “secret” engineering mode where driver attention alert can be permanently turned off. At least a one press solution per start. I hate it and will always disable. There are many forms of terrorism.
