People did help others, just like you see in this show. The 80s was the last great decade, and the 90s things slowly started changing. By 2000, it sped up with cell phones, Facebook, computers, and the internet. Cheating and lying at our fingertips. But, trillions have been poured into these neighborhoods. Programs, more programs, always need another new program. Where's the others? That's all we hear. "We need a program", "We need a new recreation center", because the other one is crime infested. Things are worse than they've ever been. You can lead a horse to water......
The characters he played were wonderful. His personal life was not so much - I was very sad to learn that in recent years. It is a good thing that he left behind so many positive images behind for us.
@@GlennaVan I'm sure there was good and bad in him as there is in all of us to some degree. From what I have heard he did have a very nice side of him. Considering his upbringing he probably could have turned our worse.
@@carinnovick2995 In Kyril's defense, he did say "a bit of a jerk," not that he was a jerk. Most people are bits of jerks. I read that as saying that he was not the "perfect" person his scripts portrayed him to be. We do have a tendency to sanitize our actors and consider them as what they portray. "Archie Bunker" is an excellent example - Carroll O'Connor very convincingly FOR YEARS portrayed a person that was so very opposite of who he really was. In the same sitcom Jean Stapleton also did an excellent job of playing a character very far removed from who she really was. It's called good acting!
Glad this show touched on the issue of illiteracy among adults. I did not realize that the issue of letting Athletes graduate from High School without knowing how to read occurred back then. Shows that the Schools failed kids then just like now.
You would be shocked at how many executives don't have good reading skills. The successful ones have taken their secretaries with them on their way up the corporate ladder.
You can always BUY Grammarly because you weren't taught grammar in school. I went to a public high school in the 1950's and the first job I got was as proofreader/ editor because I learned it IN SCHOOL, which was paid for by taxes. Now kids cannot put a sentence together.
Nowadays it's the doctors that push dope on kids - in the form of antidepressants, ADHD medication, anti anxiety medication etc - here in the UK there are now hardly any kids left that are not doped up to the the eyeballs.
@@LittleKitty22 Tragically true in the U.S. Several years ago, I learned to my great distress, that schools get federal money for students that are medicated. There was a small school district in our county who had over half of the boys on drugs for ADD and related issues. My friends' son was one of those - I tried in vain to get them to take him to a different doctor rather than the one the school recommended. By the time he was 30, he had already served two 5-year terms in prison for assault. Before he took those drugs, he was as normal behaving as my own children, but not after they put him on them - nothing but problems after.
Me too, but alas, I believe they have gone the way of common sense, decency, moral fiber, and critical thinking that holds any culture together; once it's eroded, watch out. An empire can do nothing but topple when the foundation is gone.
We can try to rebuild the foundation, but it will be difficult since so many people just don't care anymore. I agree; there is not much common sense or decency left. We need to ask ourselves, "What changed?" Maybe when we find that answer, we can try to mend the severely damaged foundation.
I have a theory but it's not a popular one and it can start a lot of arguments in group situations so I'm usually careful about when and where I share it anymore, but I think it correlates to the new technology and automation in our brave new world since circa late 90s, 2000. Nowadays manyu people rely solely on electronica for communication and in doing so much of the subtleties and nuances of our language have disappeared, replaced by slang and abbreviation. Our phones have become smarter than some of their owners, but the voice on the other end seldom belongs to a human being unless you slog through all the maneuvers and press the right buttons. Many elderly, poor, and disabled are left behind when 'progress' marches ahead too rapidly. Others are often overwhelmed, frustrated, and in seeking out a connection have only a computer screen left for solace. The technology that was supposed to replace paperwork and bring us closer together has in fact in many respects driven us further apart. When social interaction shifts drastically, our collective humanity suffers. IMHO!
I completely agree with you, but unfortunately...now that phones and other technology are here, we cannot get rid of them. In some ways they are great, but they do distract us and have been changing our communication. I am surprised though that when I have dinner/card game night, people talk more than reach for their phones. However, other times, people always reach for their phones to share a pic with their stories, or a link/video/etc. For them, it is too much work to describe something anymore, so they would rather just show it. One can view this as an added visual to the conversation, which is fine, but sometimes I wish that the first thing they think of was not the phone. As for abbreviation, I have noticed this seep into my college students' writing. You is replaced by "u", etc....in a formal essay. Kids cannot spell anymore or are too lazy to even capitalize. In a way, I see this as okay because they will be the ones whose resumes will be thrown in the trash while the more articulate and detailed- oriented person will get that job. And please...no need to type IMHO with me. Even if your opinion was not "humble," I would respect your freedom to speak. :)
You got that right..I remember watching this show at the dinner table and my dad broke down- ‘I’m not the dad I should be 😭’. I was shocked!! I was like…wait a minute dad!!..did you just..is your conscience finally telling you something?! Lol..so I started taking advantage of that moment trying to encourage him and build him up..unfortunately it didn’t stick. 😌
We Grew up Playing Outdoors ! No Cell phones ! No iPads ! We Played Outdoors To went to play with our friends ! Wish things were better for kids these days !!!! They don’t know what they are Missing ! 😢
If God gave me a wish to do something to improve the world, I would take us back to 1976, and make sure personal computers were never created. There wouldn't be an internet, smartphones, heck cell phones period. Fakebook, RU-vid, Instacrack, Flip Flop and other dates wouldn't exist. If God gave me 2 choices, the Federal Reserve would be the other I would prevent. These two things caused so much harm to people and America.
I love how this TV show talk lessons showed us how we are too love and courage build each other up have principles morals respect serve honor elders do what's right inspire build up heal and more.
This happens every year in the USA. A kid spends his entire 4 years of high school playing ball, does no work, and the teachers pass him out of obligation to the principal. Then he gets a knee injury and can't play anymore, and the coach drops him like a hot coal.
@@noorqadri3507 Oh please, Coach Carter was a saint compared to most high school sport coaches. You should've seen the football at my school, he let kids play while they were ineligible, tried to bully the teachers into giving them passing grades, got into fights with the teachers and the kids, and worse. He finally lost his job when the school's new principal came in, a principal who didn't give a sh-t about sports. All of the school's star athletes became bums. Except for one, who got into college despite not passing a single Regents exam, graduated college with D's in everything, and now he's a third-rate coach for a third-rate team in a third-rate middle school. He can't be a classroom teacher because he could never pass the exams.
@@MondoBeno So true. The high school where I spent my last two years had the most ridiculous civics class I ever heard of. On Monday, we read the material out loud. On Tuesday, we had a review test. On Wednesday we went over the test. On Thursday we had a review. On Friday, we had the same test we had on Tuesday and had gone over on Wednesday and Thursday. Why? All the football players were in the class! The irony is none of them were any good - three years without a win.
Ive had a ball watching this series. At this time in my life, I sure need their messages. That lovely woman who played Brian's mother has been in so many things including Guess Whos Coming To Dinner. She is one extraordinarily fine actress and my guess a fine person too.
That's Neat Matt.. I know for me it's very comforting. The music too. Interestingly enough I watched this at a time when I was kinda wild in High school but I don't know, I still enjoyed it so much. 😊
Women dressed really classy back then. I remember my mama and teachers dressing up every day but forgot about that until I started watching these 80's shows.

Isn't it strange the way the world is today , we do not have these programmes like this anymore. A lot of the programmes on TV today are bloody useless they do not teach you any good moral values. Love watching these programmes because they teach you so much.

Arthur Ashe got a blood transfusion from his second heart surgery in 1983, and he contracted HIV because of it, and later died of AIDS. The writer of this episode obviously didn't know this since Ashe didn't learn of this until five years after his second surgery. Very sad.
@@denisdralec1993 Well, if you're a movie buff, like I am, you might notice that it ain't all that rare for an actor to have "real life" experiences reflecting his film role or roles.
10:20-I don't know who that actress is, but she deserves an Emmy for the performance. I loved the concept of this episode, but not the ending. I've seen this happen in real life so many time, but the ending is always a lot different.
Have compassion understanding and that's what we had during these times and it just don't seem like we have shows that done do what these shows brought like highway to heaven told us lessons and we need these type of shows back on TV
Mike Cavanaugh (the coach) always played the heavy. I remember that actor from _StarMan_ the TV series. Federal agent who had the title character & son as fugitives. 😠 Fun facts: Did a Big Red chewing gum commercial as an announcer. Was a van driver in a "Dirty Harry" film. Spoke with Picard as Capt. DeSoto on "The Next Generation."
BEAUTIFUL! JUST BEAUTIFUL! THIS IS QUALITY PROGRAMING! NEVER BETTER! WE SEE THESE TYPES OF PROGRAMS ON CHRISTIAN MOVIES! JESUS IS ALL IN THE CHRISTIAN MOVIES AND CHRIST DEFINITELY INSPIRED MICHAEL IN THIS SHOW ANDDDD LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE!
One of the students in classroom at the end of the episode looks like my daughter GREICE: the girl with a white shirt; It's very amazing, because I like Little House on the Prairie and Highway to haven so much!
The killing of the kid must have been to keep him from possibly talking one day because he can't sell for them and make them money if he's dead anyways, so it served no purpose but that one. It's scary to think there are people out there that would kill a kid without blinking. Sticks, Tyrone, and that entire crew are evil.
They embrace the fatherless the orphans the widows and raise them up and encourage them in train them how to be whatever they wanted to be in life these are the TV shows and the things we need to go back to and stop turning from things that we were taught and raised
I wonder if he is supposed to have dyslexia...also I was heartbroken when the mom spent like all of her money and poured all of her hopes and dreams into her son's education only to learn he had been cheating this whole time and couldn't read...that had to be devastating to her but I thought she handled it really well. What with growing up with Jim Crow and the segregation and her granny in slavery probably this had to be a rude shock for her. But she handled it with grace and strength and turned to God for strength and guidance. I guess just him going to school despite not learning French or math helped him learn basketball and some social skills in oral communication in class (non-writing) that she and her ancestors never had. So it wasn't a complete loss. I was also super happy to see her get together her courage and enroll herself in the school because she never got to go to school herself. :) Now she doesn't have to live vicariously through her son, she gets to study her own topics. :) Yayayayayay
Weirdo! Some people just don't learn to read during their school years, not everything is a mental illness!!! Stop spreading your politically correct, lefty garbage under all the videos of this series, go off and watch some lefty propaganda that promotes perversions - that's what you lefties are so keen on!
@@LittleKitty22 Dyslexia is NOT a mental illness. You might want to know what you're talking about before you go all keyboard warrior on people. @@LittleKitty22 Dyslexia is a very real disorder and is not mental illness. It is a vision processing issue in the letters are reversed. My granddaughter was diagnosed and it turned out for her that reading with a particular tint in glasses solved her issue - it was like night and day. To this day, without the tinted glasses, she has issues. She is highly intelligent and does not have any mental illness. It is along the same lines as color blindness - a vision processing issue.

The worst thing is, people who can't read don't get any help. They get stamped up as "of low intelligence" and it is assumed that they can't possibly learn to read now.
@Down Fall There are some good teachers out there but some dont care. It's just a paycheck to them.. My parents divorced when I was a kid and we moved so many times. I missed so much school. They socially passed me two years in a row but I struggled in math really bad. I finally had a teacher in the 5th grade who took an interest in me and actually cared. She tutored me after school at her house every day in the summer. I dont know where I would be if it were not for her. I went on to graduate and go to college but I honestly dont think I would have made it, if it were not for thst one teacher who cared. Not everyone is so lucky to have teachers who care like she did.
It's very sad bc I deal live with a learning disability and the school system failed me. Luckily I can read and write. But other things are very hard for me. However I did graduate from college with a BA and a AA degree. Unfortunately I am not doing nothing in those areas of my degree. But I know i am doing better than most. Anyways please follow me on RU-vid at #DisneyDiva and thank you and be safe and sound.
My aunt worked in the public schools in Mississippi and said every year students would have to go home and ask their mothers how to spell their middle names for their graduation diplomas. It's not just Mississippi though. It happens all over.
