@zombsk98
@zombsk98 5 лет назад
@Phil Weatherley You must be great at parties. Cheer up man - times move on.
@zombsk98
@zombsk98 5 лет назад
@Phil Weatherley Well, what is one person's crap is another's treasure, in television. Sortof. I understand where you are coming from regarding the notion of broadcasters throwing out God-knows what to pander to an audience that wants to view it. It's far worse in the US so there is that to be grateful for I suppose. But with "stupidity" in general it's far too deep and complex to just start screeching at broadcasters for just earning a cheap buck. Could it be as the notion of needing to be intelligent to survive has made basic educational needs unimportant when food can still be put on the table? Perhaps. Or could it be that other-thought and simple and non-thought provoking comedy a quick form of escapism from the stress of work etc.? Perhaps that also. Or the now ease for everyone having access to media in the modern-age is just now being reflected in the media being produced. These people have always been here, but only in the last generation or so being truly tapped into. I'm not one to say really but there you go. Knowing "crap" from "crap" is of an individuals opinion, and those that want something more thought provoking etc. are more likely to be more of a thinker, and can be perceived as more "intelligent" let's be fair. But, foe example, I am personally very picky when it comes to music. I come across as knobbish when I state I don't like pop music, for instance. And whilst I think that my idea of good music is derived in it's complexity, thought and perceived care by the artist/musician in question, other's that also think the same might completely dislike what I enjoy. Conversely, I also like to occasionally listen to simpler stuff that goes against my grown tastes. I have many friends that are the opposite to me - they enjoy singing simple beat songs etc., but are by no means dumb, just a different group with their own culture and interests that are different to mine, in this form of media. I guess my final point is that sometimes it's worth to grin and bear it. Not saying something to others, or on the internet (lol) with perhaps a strongly held opinion, or controversial one, is the best course of action for yourself and friends - speaking mainly for me tbh. I've already come across as a pretentious grumpy sob to them but self-restraint keeps everyone happy. I'm not sure what I was going with this but there you go.
@zombsk98
@zombsk98 5 лет назад
@Phil Weatherley Interesting points - and I definitely agree on the educated standpoint, largely. But also there is the way someone is brought up and the society around them. Entertainment-wise, less so. You can still like simple, arguably slightly brainless and aimless programmes and still be knowledgeable in other matters of real-life situations. I myself would put myself in that grouping at points. Outside that with media, newspapers, opinion pieces etc. I have not enough of a strong viewpoint to argue one way or another, but it is clear a divide is growing between those that grasp reality, and those resistant to change and as you said, find scapegoats for when things don't go their way, or appear to go their way. Furthermore, I think the idea of following ideologies and almost blindly following these sorts of things is dangerous for the most part - swearing and blanking out opponents to your idea only allows pressure to build and piss off people. But I'm not psychological or much of a thinker of the wider picture so apologies if this doesn't make any sense. On the point of Hitler and the 1933 election - I don't think that was a good example as the Nazi's started to gain a significant presence beforehand. There was monitoring by their groups when voting was taking place and antisemitism was already clearly present to the public. I doubt that a significant number that voted for them did so because they actually wanted them. This is arguably the same with Trump et al., although less pressure persay lol and more the fact that either people don't care or know(?) about the blatent sexism, racism, xenophobic comments they make, or they are part of those brackets in the first place. But this is too complex to talk about and I don't really know enough to comment more properly.

24:50 Oh, when things were so innocent at the BBC. When Jimmy Savile still breathed life, when Rolfie Harris thought he'd never see the inside of a prison cell, and when Brucie Forsyth thought nothing of shuffling creepily towards a terrified young actress who knew only too well what went on behind the scenes at good old Auntie Beeb. Not to worry, Laura. Savile dies next year, then things quickly take an abrupt left turn.

This was a clash of comedy styles, a clash of generations. Strange that the producers allowed Bruce to hi-jack parts of the show with prepared, signature routines - it isn't that kind of show. For Ian it was torture. Ian and Bruce can't stand each other - maybe Ian took the mickey in Private Eye. If it hadn't been for Ross Noble's (and to a lesser extent Paul's) good-humoured (and brilliant) comic fence-mending, it could all have gone sour . . .
@paulwhitelaw4202
@paulwhitelaw4202 5 лет назад
You're rather missing the point here. Brucie 'hijacking' the show with his shtick is the whole joke. That's why he's there, to comically subvert a satirical panel show with his incongruous old-school light entertainment style. Everyone involved is in on the gag, Hislop included. The latter is playing up to his grumpy, smug school prefect persona, he's exaggerating his disdain for Brucie as a droll comic counterpoint to Noble and Merton's enthusiasm. Noble and Merton are comedy nerds, they adore the likes of Brucie. Hislop isn't steeped in showbiz lore, he doesn't really care about that sort of thing, but he gets why it's funny to accentuate his bemusement and disinterest.
