As a South Australian I noticed senator Simon Birmingham being shown on the ABC in a pacific island country with foreign minister Wong. As they are both senators for South Australia and one being a member of the parliamentary executive I thought it would be pertinent to question the benefit to South Australians of the non executives attendance. His response was that he was the oppositions head of the senate. My response was that he was not a part of the parliamentary executive and that the question put was not answered. Since that time there has been crickets. The scam I see in the above is that any member of parliament who is not a part of the parliamentary executive attending anything outside their representative electorate or state apart from attending parliament must be assumed to be a private matter and the costs involved conducting their private affairs should not be subsidised from the public purse. During the last referendum it was noted that many parliamentarians were attending talk fests far from their electorates or state espousing the political union stance for which they were affiliated, how much was the public purse rorted for this. Every election I see parliamentarians attending fellow unionists election pushes, are these instances also funded by the public purse ? The scams may end when those that plunder the public purse for their private matters are held to account and prosecuted for their fraudulent claims. IMHO

Tax them weekly on their revenue like they do the plebs and get the ATO to do their job.

Time to move to a system of publicly funded political parties. It's not a new idea. A system where the funding of political parties is not dependent on what they are going to do for large corporations.

Fatima didn't cross the floor to save Palestinian kids. She got wedged by the Greens on a failed non-binding resolution - that is only slightly different than what Labor passed. Recognition now vs via a peace process means cementing the undemocratic quasi-governments in Palestine instead of using the peace process to help the people of Gaza have their input.

I was told I should go to the Middle East to protest war crimes. Maybe Australia isn’t the place to demand better standards for humanity. It’s a shame, I thought it was.

I was a Labour Party member for many years. I’m not in the party anymore, I do happen to think for myself these days. As much as I’ll never return as a party member, it is very plainly clear when you join the party that you don’t breaks ranks. You can’t have it both ways. Don’t sign on to an ideology if you don’t read the charter. It’s an absolute human disaster what’s happening in Gaza, but Australia has no horse in this race other than senators falling on their swords and the public discourse. There are no winners here.

Workers once had lobby groups called unions.Work Choices shifted the collective mind in this country now workers believe they can stand against management and government alone whilst the top end of town have for example, The Business Council of Australia,The Minerals Council,AMA,Pharmacy Gild and all the various chambers of commerce etc so from my perspective many are reaping what they sow for been stupid enough to believe government and employers have their best interests at heart.A re unionised workforce minus the insane militancy of the eighties would be a start to improve things.
