@@ML-jm2qj hikaru had a big advantage, and there wasn't really a way for magnus to get a win. It would likely have been a win for hikaru or a draw; either way he shouldn't have offered a draw at the time that he did.
@@radicalaimit’s more likely a draw, as this endgame has the bishop pair creating an impenetrable fortress around the king, and Magnus can probably just repeat moves with the bishop. Plus, Magnus is unlikely to blunder. As levy said; Hikaru would have played on against anyone else; except Magnus.
So the only way for Hikaru to win this is to push all the pawns up the board. If hes unablr to create an unfavoravle position, then after trading he has to try to win a queen vs 2 bishops and pawn which sounds very difficult to win or essentially drawn.
Hikaru maybe should've at least tried to break the fortress and see if Magnus would slip up? He can't lose, only draw or win. But yeah, it looks solid. The king can't attack the pinned bishop, and 3v4 minority doesn't seem to mount anything other than the h-pawn moving... The pawn breaks just liquidate material - the light-squared bishop can always just shuffle back and forth. The draw offer is understandable.
@@rage2904it’s also not easy to attack with white, all black has to do is shuffle bishops around, white has no clear moves to attack, pushing pawns will just end up in white losing the pawns with black remaining a pawn or 2 up. Magnus wouldn’t have blundered it
The problem was that this is not the moment Hikaru gave up. It was when sacrificed his queen and Hikaru accepted. Since then Hikaru was shaking his head thinking magnus calculated and knows what hes doing. Here Hikaru felt lucky to go with a Draw lol But yea Magnus is a great player. Just Hikaru needs more confidence in himself probably.
Bishop pair in the end game is as lethal as it gets hikaru is one of the best players in the world he out of all us can make the best judgement of that Thing with magnus is he is so stubborn he would rather lose than giving up a 10% win chance
It's like having a helicopter against two lethal tanks that are well camouflaged in a jungle. White army might actually win the battle, but you also might get knocked off via a missile out of nowhere. That is why general Hikaru is pleading with general Magnus to cease fire.
@@dhruvtiwari45true, evaluation bar was flying for white, perhaps Hikaru was not confident enough as he was very low in time and he basically knows how resilient Magnus can be in these kinds of end games and how he even so brilliant at time scrambles.
@@Philiopantheon82 I don't think Hikaru is afraid of magnus's endgame skills or anything. He just actually thought that magnus had a fortress and the position was a draw.
There is nothing to win with for the side with the queen. The pawns are simply not enough to do anything, especially considering thay black even has more on the same side. The draw is a correct result.
Yeah, both Biships with a solid pawn structure and 1 up too, definitely = a Queen and another solid pawn structure! Absolutely, a draw here and a fortress as Magnus knows can happen, too! Just usually, one can't expect that!
@davidemigliorini133 It would have been a grind, a trial for both to do anything, but then only to realize the draw, eventually, neither blundering, I'm sure.
@pawnoir I don't see how that's possible, but I'm not, nor do I even have a chess engine to put it on. If you want to share the moves on just one game that showed that, and competing against an equal chess engine, go for it.

That's stockfish. Even if Magnus and Hikaru tried to team up to beat stockfish still they will lose against stockfish no matter what. No human can think like stockfish and win from nothing to lose or draw position
Stockfish has this as +0.9. With only seconds on the clock against someone like Magnus in a very closed position, I don't think there's any realistic way that Hikaru converts this, so the draw offer makes sense. It's really hard to make meaningful progress.
Idk why the comment section has people saying they wouldn't give up. Guys, HIKARU offered a draw. He did not resign. Magnus was like you have time, why draw but sure ill gladly take it.

There isnt much more to be done. Move the king up and attempt to disrupt Magnus pawn structure but the King wouldn’t be safe on any square given the two bishops. Even if that Hikaru has no passed paws. Looks a total drawn position to me. Playing on would be pointless.
It says its winning and im sure it is. but i don't know what i would even do as white in this position. The king is defended, the pawns on each side are the same. I Feel like it would end up being a draw anyway. Also sometimes if engine gives plus 1 advantage theres a fortress and the advantage means nothing in reality. Again though i am a 1300 noob and hikaru is a GM so i assume from magnus reaction that there was actually a known way to win and i just dont see it because i am not a GM
It's not saying it's winning. The computer can't tell. It'll take over 30 moves to win which is well outside its depth. White obviously has winning chances and can't lose with perfect play. And you don't need a computer to figure that out.
Give this position to stock fish , white is completely winning here , +2 from start for white ,engine will teach u how to win , u try what ever u think , engine will defeat u with in 30 moves from here with white, and magnus knows that ,that's why he is far better than hikaru

So many comments here but not one has acknowledged that Hikaru is down almost 20 seconds, and he is the one that needs to push for progress. Magnus simply had to hold the fortress. Hikaru offered a draw because it was a realistic possibility that he would lose his winning position on time, and get 0 points instead of 0.5
I would like to watch the complete game to know how this position was arrived at. Two bishops may prevent opposite king to come closer but single rook not at all
