Because ding made the choice, so he was able to prepare himself mentally more before deciding. Ian had to react to dings decision which threw him off. Ding earned in a big way. Had to work his ass off to get in enough events to qualify for candidates, had to come back in candidates to sneak into the number 2 spot, and then had to fight from being down how many times in this match? I was in team Nepo whole match, hoped he will win. But objectively, he had all the chances he needed to win. He threw winning position in game 12, and it was the turning point, not this rapid game. The problem I think that made him loose is that many many times he played too quickly in critical positions, where Ding in place of Ian would never blitz out moves. Congratz to Ding, and big disappointment for Ian and his fans. Edit: even more disappointing than his loss against Magnus. There he had everything in his hand, and yet threw his match lead multiple times☹️

Summary from the Match - Ding grew in confidence with every match, and Nepo allowed it. - Whenever Ding made mistake, position was still manageable. But whenever Nepo blundered, it became hopeless for him in one move. -If Nepo had taken 4-5 mins extra in game 12 and 14, he would have won then and there (the f5, e5 blunders played in a haste without thinking) - As the tournament progressed, Ding played actively, while Nepo became more passive. Nepo continuously bottled +3 , +4 advantages, while Ding, whenever he got even +1 advantage, he converted (except for the one match when he froze on the clock. He was much better and Nepo was plain lucky) - Most of the brilliant moves came from Ding, not Nepo. - Nepo had at least 4-5 chances to win this match in classical alone, he was either to hasty or just didn't believe in himself enough. - Lastly, you can train and memories 1000s of theories and patterns, but winning mentality is something you're born with. When that moment came, Ding showed winning mentality by taking a calculated risk, and Nepo fell apart under the pressure. Congratulations to both of them.

Ding had several matches that he held the advantage or even a winning position once and let it slip away. Nepo also though. They both had chances they let slip. That's why the score of the match was even and it went to tiebreak.
@johnkirk1772
@johnkirk1772 Год назад
@@stanleymyrick4068 it is true but Nepos blunders were often quite unforced, they weren't due to time trouble, and the blunders were outright egregious at times - he left a lot to be desired whenever it came to critical decisions in sharp lines though his positional play and opening prep forced Ding into some pretty tough situations - I'd like to feel for Nepo but I don't: he played subpar chess, he was careless at times (almost lazy when it came to calculating) and extremely unlikable in the press conferences

I think Ian made the same mistake in the match as he did against Magnus in his previous WC match: back then, he had a winning position, but instead of grabbing a vital free pawn, he decided to keep the tension and try and flag his opponent. that turned out to be a mistake. in this game Ian continued to push for a win, but only by trying to keep the pressure up, not by developing any actually concrete plan. this is the difference between winning and losing. you can only circle your prey for so long. at some point, you need to go in for the kill. Ian lacks that killer instinct

It's really inspiring to see someone achieve such a big goal like this, and I'm sure it will motivate other players to keep working hard too. All the top players knew Ding was the better player of the 2. But because no one has rally seen Ding play since 2019, Nepo was the favorite. Ding A game is better than Nepo A game. He was clearly not at his top this year. With more time preparation and confidence, he would be hard to beat by the next challenger.
@moatef1886
@moatef1886 Год назад
What? Ding A game (the peak of his gameplay, when he’s feeling in the mood) is not better than Nepo’s A game. A lot of top GMs, including Magnus, have said that when Nepo is having a good day, he’s unstoppable. But his floor is also lower than that of other top GMs. It’s not about comparing their A games, because I think Nepo is equal to if not better than Ding when they’re both playing at their peaks (Magnus said Nepo was as good if not slightly better than him when he was having a good day). But Ding’s floor is much higher than Nepo’s floor, always solid and consistent.

@@moatef1886 The world champion is most of the time the best endgame player, rarely the one who knows the crazy opening or stockfish lines. Only someone who started to watch chess in 2020 could think that Nepo is the better player. He could and should have won, but still never better than Ding. Go watch the Sinquefield final 2019 Ding-Carlsen, one of the best game ever and a brillancy from Ding to beat Magnus. Ding was undefeated in Classical for 100 games in a row, a record at the time. Nepo endgame is not at Magnus or Ding Level. That's why Magnus have been No1 and Ding No2 until Covid. There is literally 2 interviews on youtube of Kasparov and Daniel Dubov saying that Ding A game is superior than that of Nepo. They still favored Nepo this year for the same reason I just mentioned. Ding has not played a lot and people did not know what he could bring. Ding saved a losing position in game 14 (totally lost) by playing the last 40 moves accurately while on time pressure. In the same position today, Ian could not find the right moves and got worse. Ding played the top moves. Ian just thought like a professional chess player assuming that it was an easy draw.
