In June of 2024, I made my first visit to Japan in nearly 30 years with the prime objective of revisiting the magnificent HIKAWA MARU, a beautiful Japanese combiliner that was built in 1930 for NYK Lines Yokohama to Seattle service. Along with the QUEEN MARY in Long Beach, the ROTTERDAM in Rotterdam and the QE2 in Dubai, the HIKAWA MARU is one of only four succssfully preserved ocean liners in existence. She is also the only Japanese ocean liner left from the nation's vast pre-war fleet and her Art Deco interiors were created by Marc Simon, a prominent French designer who worked on the ILE DE FRANCE and NORMANDIE, among other legendary ships. In this five minute video, I take you through some of the HIKAWA MARU's highlights but barely scratch the surface of what lies in store when I do a full Decked! top-to-bottom history and tour of the ship soon. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this soupcon of one of the world's wonder ships. Please, in the meantime, if you have not yet already done so, subscribe to this channel and thank you for your support. Artlist music used: "Taiyo Sun" by Ian Post. Very special thanks to Frank Wolthius for the more dynamic thumbnail! #nykhikawamaru #hikawamaru #oceanliner #classicliner #artdeco #marcsimon

Finally, Japan. Lots of good ships in Japan especially their passenger ferries, may not be as beautiful as the European ones but their simplicity have the unique charm to it, especially their passenger ferries in the past.

Visited the ship a few years ago and found it very much as rewarding as Queen Mary and Rotterdam. An impressive time capsule.

She is my second favorite ship in the world behind RMS Queen Mary. Was there in November 2006 just before her refit. She was a little shabby around the edges then but so so so beautiful. By the looks of it you had exclusive access. When I visited the public was not allowed in most any of the public rooms but I was able to walk out on to the bow. But you probably didn’t see the diorama of the Captain in his cabin smoking a pipe and speaking to us in Japanese! Can’t wait for your tour!

Hi Dave! The good news is that the three first class public rooms are now open and they even encourage visitors to take a seat and enjoy the surrounds which I did with glee. The bad news is that I was not exactly welcome on board although they did not stop me from filming. I was told it was their policy to not grant interviews and that they do not like social media platforms like RU-vid. Go figure. I really do hope to find out what is being done to preserve her hull. My biggest fear is that she might pull an AURORA or MS SCANDINAVIA since she technically cannot be drydocked due to some strange law in Japan forbidding "buildings", which like the QM, she is now classified as, from being drydocked. My friend, Japanese ship historian Hisashi Noma, told me this way back in 1995, so the clock is ticking...
@daveleephoto

@midshipcinema thank you for the information on her current operation status. It's a shame they didn't welcome you with open arms as you can bring more attention to her for the good of all ship fans like myself. I have a trip to Japan planned for next year and I will be stopping by HM to visit and photograph. Some video too!

Wow, she is very impressive! She also appears to be conveniently located near the cruise terminal as well. I just toured Canadian Pacific's S.S. Moyie (1898) in Kaslo, BC and one day I hope to tour CPR's S.S. Keewatin (1907) which recently moved to Kingston ON.

She's a ten minute walk from the cruise terminal, so please make some time for her if you go to Japan. KEEWATIN is a stunning ship and hopefully now safe for future generations to enjoy.

Awesome video and a great looking ship. In Hamburg, Germany is the beautiful cargo/passenger ship Cap San Diego build in 1961 for Hamburg Süd. She is the largest driveable museum´s ship in the World and she is one of my favourite ship. Maybe it would be worth for a video someday :)

I love the CAP SAN DIEGO! Such a beautiful cargo liner with her CANBERRA-meets-SAVANNAH profile. I have filmed on board but would like to do so again in 4K. Definitely when I get back to Hamburg. Many thanks!

Japan used to have a lot of preserved ships until very recently (mostly ferries) but many have since sadly been scrapped (especially a lot of the once saved 1960s era JNR railway ferries) at least Hikawa is safe!
@midshipcinema

Yes! I visited BRASIL MARU and SCANDINAVIA back in the 90s and they are both gone now. I did see HAKKODA MARU in Aomori last week and will do a short video on her. I hope HIKAWA can hang in there. 30 years ago, there was much concern about her hull as she hasn't been drydocked since 1960. I think that is still the case, although NYK did do a lot of cosmetic repairs in 2006 to keep her open.
@thesketchydude1315
@thesketchydude1315 2 месяца назад
@@midshipcinema yeah, now Brasil Maru is rotting away in Guangzhou China last I checked...shame (also Hakkoda Maru was the lucky JNR Ferry, all her sisters that WERE preserved have been scrapped since...what a waste) and yeah, her hull is looking quite rough I must be honest, its almost in the condition that the recently scrapped "Royal Wing" of 1960 was in, good at a distance but quite bad shape up close, with lots of obvious rust and damage just painted over : (
@midshipcinema
@midshipcinema 2 месяца назад
@@thesketchydude1315 Sorry to hear about HAKKODA's sisters. BRASIL was actually in another port, not Guangzhou, but I was told recently, also scrapped.
@Bruh56788
@Bruh56788 2 месяца назад
@@midshipcinemaAccording to my research that is not the case. The BRASIL was closed (likely due to the COVID pandemic, if not earlier) by 2022. And I’ve seen photos bouncing around showing her still around as of 2023. However, I read their is suppose to be some serious rebuilding in Zhangjiang, where she is beached. So I wouldn’t be surprised if she has been recently scrapped or will be scrapped in due time. Truly sad!
@midshipcinema
@midshipcinema 2 месяца назад
@@Bruh56788 Yes, Zhanjiang. She never went to Guangzhou as originally planned. I went there shortly after she left Japan and she was not there. Well, it would be nice if she still existed in Zhanjiang but the condition she was last photographed in was shockingly bad.

Hi Peter, did you read the report that the Aurora has been refloated and plans are being made to do something with her, now that they patched the hole in the hull.
@midshipcinema
@midshipcinema 2 месяца назад
Hi Jeremy, yes, I saw that AURORA was refloated but was unaware of the plans you mention. Is there some verification of that or is it just something people like us are hoping against hope will actually happen. Whoever steps in to deal with the ship will have a hefty bill from the Coast Guard to pay and will have to deal with finding her a new home as I believe the City of Stockton is taking measures to get her out of there ASAP. So, fingers crossed there might be a knight in shining armor but reality is usually a different story. :)

Amazing, Peter! I am looking forward to it 👍😀 On anothed note, I still think you should do some work on your thumbnails to make them stand out more. I think you should look at some other channels for examples, put your head and name in them and some promoting text or the name of the ship. You can also do that retrospectively for your olfer video's, to get a consice look and make them more recognizable 😃
@midshipcinema

Thank you Frank. I will consider but I really don't want to do "gotcha" thumbnails with those silly faces so many influencer types post. I do put the ship's name in each thumbnail, of course. Anyway, always appreciate your support. :)
