I wear Luna’s mono gordo for around town on pavement. You need Oso Flaco for the “bendy” kind. I wear those around the house. One day (hopefully) they will see a trail.

So glad you made it back to your van ok, sore feet and all. But covering the same groundspace on your hikes with scorpions and snakes in just sandles doesn't protect your toes or feet from these venomous critters. Just looking out for you. Hope you find a good pair of shoes. Feet are always very particular. You need something flat and bendable. I need somewhat of an arch, soft heel with hardly any bend. I often say the same thing as you, Is it too much to ask for the right kind of shoe?!
I like your ideas about simplifying your meals. What's your opinion about dehydrating food before going on a road trip? I think with enough planning, a refrigerator or even a cooler might not be necessary.... As for hiking, you might want to try using hiking poles. Hiking poles might take a little of the load off your feet, and provide extra stability. The hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains in Southern California is fantastic right now. There is still plenty of snow in the mountains, and plenty of sunshine too. I hiked to Ice House Saddle last week and it was wonderful. Take care!

Interesting challenge to make your own shoes... Have you tried buying shoes at thrift stores that are a little too big, cutting them up, and using parts to construct yours?
Your hike reminds me a little of the CDT in southern New Mexico. I just started using the Luna Mono Winged Edition, so far so good. We'll see what I think when I can get some real hiking in.
This was a very good video for a reason I have never seen in a video about hiking in the South West. Your video shows how easy it is to get lost, as a result of going down what appears to be a trail, but is just a wash. For that reason I will share this video with others in the future and encourage others to learn from it and to do the same. Why? Because it is not uncommon for hikers in the West to “get lost” even in somewhat popular state or national parks. If their bodies are later found, it is usually wondered how they could have gotten off the trail, or why they could not stick to the trail. When they left the trail (which might have happened just as it happened to you), they got disoriented, and some never made it back. Your use of the satellite (GPS) image/map is something that showed you where you were. Unfortunately, for many others, they don’t have or use a GPS, thinking they will just “follow the trail.” Thanks for showing how the false trail could lead you, or anyone astray. I’m glad you shared this and made it back. Keep up the good videos..and your microphone is capturing good audio. (Subscribed)
Have you tried croc sandals? I love mine, I wear them all summer long I forgot my water shoes and had to wear my sandals at a water park for three days. I was sure that they would be ruined but I will be wearing them this summer and that was two years ago. I’m 70 and I have never had a more comfortable shoe. I just started watching your videos ( love them) and would love to start camping. We shall see though.
