Hiking 170 Miles in 5 Days on the Tahoe Rim Trail

The largest alpine lake in the United States, more than 2 million years old, sitting more than a mile above see level... And I'm walking around it! My goal is the 170 mile Tahoe Rim Trail in just 5 days, which averages out to more than 30 miles per day. I wasn't putting a label on it, but I guess I'm fastpacking this trail. Though really you could say I fast pack every trail! I like to think that I'm going for a speed record or fastest known time, and that I'm just really bad at it. Either way this is how I like to hike and do long distance trails. Fast and light.
For this thru hike, excluding my camera gear my baseweight is super ultralight, under 5lbs total for my gear. I feel I have everything I need to stay comfortable and safe too! My shelter is a zpacks dyneema composite fabric tarp, I am carrying a kuiu fleece jacket, enlightened equipment 30 degree enigma quilt, palante packs 24L joey backpack, and a bunch of other stuff worth looking into!
I think given the relative short distance of this trail, I am able to go even lighter than I normally would. In advance to starting I can nearly predict what the weather will be like for the 5 days, so I can choose my gear more wisely, and carry a more minimal kit.
The Tahoe Rim Trail I think would be the perfect shakedown hike for anyone looking to get into thru hiking, or especially those who are interested in doing the Pacific Crest Trail. It will teach you a lot about your gear, your body, what you like, and how you deal with problems when they arise. And the trail is short enough that you could travel to do it in a vacation away from work. It isn't the hardest trail in the world, but there is a lot to learn out here and I highly recommend it.
Since completing the Arizona Trail this spring I have been itching to get out and do another long hike again, so here I am! Later this fall I plan on doing the Long Trail in Vermont. So here's to another thru hike, I hope you enjoy!

I think in my Sheltowee Trace videos there was a section that was really muddy and I took quite a few falls! I almost took it out, but thought if nothing else it's funny to watch someone fall(so long as they're ok)

Great video, Jupiter. I was going to do that hike in 2020 but COVID destroyed my trip from here in Florida that year. I met you first at Lands End in Canada where you were beginning your hike to Key West, and again at the base of Old Blue Mountain in Maine when you arrived there. It is a great point that it's an awesome warm up, or training hike, for the PCT. I did it back in 2011, after the PCT and had exactly the same thought. I'm not sure why some hikers talk disparagingly about it, could have something to do with the fact that much of it's open to bikes, especially on the Eastern side, but I never had much of an issue with bikes.....

Oh, to be young again. Took me two weeks back in 2021. I went CCW as well. I know a lot of folks go CW, but as a former thru hiker, I wanted to cross paths with that year's crop of hikers in the Desolation Wilderness. Maybe it was because my thru hike was in 1977, or the fact I was going the opposite direction, but I had very little recollection of the PCT portion of the TRT.

I think if I posted more often, but lower quality stuff I would grow quicker. It's a trade I suppose. I just do what I enjoy, and what I think others would enjoy or may find helpful. Sometimes maybe lower quality but getting the information out there would be better, I don't know

@@TheBonswah Agree, the content is great, but at the same time it's fairly obvious that the people with a lot of subscribers get them by posting (good content) more often. I guess it depends on what Jupiter want to achieve with the channel. As long as number of subscribers and generated income aren't important then he's doing great. If he want to grow the channel then creating more content is the key. Take this video, it's 15 minutes for five days. It's a beautiful area and just adding five minutes of video would have created two 10+ minutes videos. Many hiker-RU-vidrs would have stretched it to one video per day. Maybe too much, but getting two videos out in stead of one with the same quality wouldn't be difficult.

Love this one! I like the 'show the whole trail in one video' concept. I'm sure it's easy with shorter hikes but you could have split this into 5 videos and I appreciate that you didn't! Give us just enough to peak our interest but leave as much as possible for us to find for ourselves

Awesome Jupiter! I did a small section of the the TRT through the TRTA. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association is wonderful. So many people volunteer their time and give back to the trail. I learned so much about the TRT. It so close to home and it’s now a part of me. Can’t wait to do some trail maintenance next summer! Thank for sharing!

Your comment about the TRT being a good prep hike for PCT inspired a thought. I’d love to do a long thru hike, but family commitment is in the forefront for my foreseeable future. At my age, I never know what will happen next. But my thoughts were inspired by you in that although even a “short” hike like the JMT may cause me to be gone too long, the TRT would not. Then I thought I could round it out with the Collegiate Peaks loop in CO and the Northville Placid Trail here in NY. Kinda like the poor mans triple crown so to speak. Thanks! Always a pleasure watching your videos!

Absolutely! I think it's awesome for those who can do the gigantic thru hikes but it's just not possible for most people with family and career. Some of the best times I've had were on the sub 300 mile trips and I wish there was more focus on those sometimes. I think partly that's why I like to do them, to maybe bring more attention. You can and will have an amazing journey on all those you mentioned and I hope you do!

Loved seeing your perspective on a trail so close to my home. I’ve section hiked the whole loop a dozen times or so. Two attempts at thru hiking it were side lined by injury. I planned on hiking the full loop this month, but in the timeframe I’d set aside, the wildfires forced most of the trail to be closed. Maybe next year!

I think this is at least the 4th time I've watched this through. It's one of a handful that sold me on making the TRT my adventure for the summer, and my first >50mi thru-hike! I'm recognizing more of the scenery as I research, especially now that I've nailed down my rough camp locations and my start/stop (KBS, CCW). Was going to push for 6 days but decided to build in some slack and even a full extra day in Deso Wilderness off-TRT, to span the week between my 🎂-day and the 4th, 8 days. SLT fireworks on-trail should be sick, weather permitting! Still working on the meal plan but intending to go unsupported (except using trash cans and artificial water sources). Just over a month to go... Next year maybe SHR? Or JMT if I don't feel ready to go off-trail.

After a near-O through TC and a zero off-trail around Fontanillis I bailed at Echo on day 9 in '22 due to injury and running out of time. (And my cat in his final days alone at the vet.) 2023's big trip was the YHR - north loop, which was on another level. Gates of the Arctic in AK is the big one this year, but I feel like I have unfinished business in Tahoe, so I'm going to hit it again, CW this time, as soon as the snow clears. Going in with a lot more experience and maybe even a little wisdom this time.

I have never seen a rattlesnake up that high, I heard they might be there, but it different actually that one. I hope you went up Freel Peak on your last day, the highest in the area and had great views. I sectioned hiked and ran, you make it look so easy to backpack it with that tiny pack.

Very end of july to the beginning of august. Smoke was definitely a concern but I got lucky with mostly clear skies and haze in the distance. I'm sure earlier in the year, maybe May, would be a more ideal time. Though it could be a trade with mosquitoes in the spring
