You and Haze outdoors, are two of my favourite youtubers and the fact you’ve both done this recently is epic. Congrats on an epic adventure, and carrying a large child on your back the whole way
Just subbed because this video is great. I’ve watched a lot of gear packouts but yours is completely down to earth, relatable, informative and really funny. The thermos flask rant is worth the hour investment alone!
I can’t believe people are watching the whole hour tbh 😂 I couldn’t get it any shorter! 🤦🏼♀️ Thanks so much for watching, and for staying an hour - your medal is in the post 😂😊🙌🏻
Finally a new vlog. I have been missing the funny and good vlogs. Cant wait for the next one. You are by far the best youtuber out there. Hope you are doing well, and thanks for taking time to edit this epic vlog.
I completed my first and only hike. Coast2Coast UK. Backpack Haglofs Lex 110. Day 1 weight 35+kg. I struggled to lift it. That’s including food and water. Day 14 when finished hike it was 30kg including water (4.5 litres). Weighted on scale. Yes I packed tins of food for whole hike. Including insane amount of energy bars, gels, sweets, avocados, onions and rhubarbs… 2 camping stoves and a saw just in case. Walking uphill was fun, even more hated steep downhills. Never again! My comfortable weight was about 20kg.
Fantastic video Sarah, your humour and information is a great mix! Looking forward to watching your trip later. It’s on my list of trails to do. The only thing I’d add about your thermos dilemma is to ditch it and the cook set and replace with a couple of titanium mugs with lids (750ml & 450ml) and make a pot cozy for the 750ml - that way you have the benefits and versatility of the thermos and cook set combo but without the weight/bulk 💡 👌
I like the information you give. As someone who hasn’t plucked up the courage to solo long hike yet I appreciate you being so open about everything. Thank you.
I did only see now it was an hour we spent enjoying your video yesterday. Very infornative, love it that no subject is avoided. Your style is unique! My wife loves the Fjallraven Abisko as well, she had them on her wishlist for ages and bought them after Athena Mellor gave them a raving review. She also has the summer version now. Looking forward to the video of the walk.
Yo! Just wanted to quickly pop on and say thanks for this.. I'm planning my itinerary/kit etc... And I've watched your videos before... But not this one, because let's face it... Kit videos are usually pretty boring.. But yours is hilarious.. and (handily) also very helpful. Thanks!
great video instant sub. a little porridge tip. you can make it in the paper sachet it comes in, just pour ya hot water in n stir as ya go n leave for a coupla minutes then hey presto eat porridge out of the paper no thermos needed.
Thank you! Oh no way? Whenever I’ve poured the water in to measure, I’ve always burnt myself or spilt it coz it’s hard to hold 😂 Never thought of doing it like that though. If I can master holding it without being an idiot then that could be a huge winner! Thanks 🙏🏻
Great to see you back out it’s been a very long time. Keep safe in your adventures . I hoped I would have seen more of your actual adventure like an edited version of all the interesting places you passed. You’re such fun.
Great video series! I watched (and rewatched) your whole series as I’m planning to do a portion of the trail next summer 2024. We won’t have time to do the entire trail and I’m having a really difficult time choosing a 7 day stretch! If you only have 7 days -where would start/stop?!? I’m currently leaning towards a middle chunk between Glenduh and Shiel Bridge - but I think that’s too far for 7 days
Another great video... Awesome humour, good info and unbridled honesty. I agree with Lucas J... You and Hazey are pioneering in the outdoor vlog business.
Absolutely loved all of your CWT content. Intact all of your content. Keep going its fabulous. Thank you. I am now planning on doing THE CWT later this year, but probably not August!!!! LOL. Thanks again!
Good luck! Yeh I’d probably avoid August, although, it’s a bit quieter people wise I’d guess, not that it’s a busy trail anyway but still, so it depends if you prefer people or midges 😂
I use a liner in summer on it's own as I sleep very warm as a big wide lad. I can use a 2 season sleeping bag much of the year and only need a 3, 4 in mid winter. A liner, sleeping bag and bivvy bag in a tent or hammock with tarp does me. Yes SMIDGE I really hate insects, particularly those which fly. Good wee video thanks for posting. Baby wipes, I keep the used ones and burn them - I don't use them for bathroom admin.
Just stumbled upon your channel as looking to take up hiking. Its great your so explicit. I was thinking where do I go to shit in places. Your literary the funniest hiker I've watched on here.
Heading from US to hike the Cape Wrath Trail next week. I downloaded OS Maps, created an account, paid, but not able to find a route already created for the trail. Advice? Thanks! Your videos are both informative and entertaining; much appreciated.
Have you hovered over Fort William (start point) and pressed the route button? Or hover over Camusnagaul just across the water where the ferry lands and look at the routes from there, I can see loads of CWT day 1. Alternatively, if you want tow whole thing as 1 route, find a site that lets you download the route GPX file, and then go on the web version of OS maps (not the app), and import the GPX file. Have an amazinggggg trip!!! 🙌🏻
Great advice about listening to oneself and not being to hard on ourselves....no pain no gain in Bollocks it's about enjoyment....not had any notification from you for ages ....have you not been posting recently ??? I love your vids and sense of humour x
One of my favorite RU-vid videos of all time! Over joyed you survived this thru-hike and can’t help but think we’ve all packed things we should have left behind or viscera (looking at you Big Agnes sleeping I should have taken when it got down to -6C at night in Arizona). Can’t wait to see your next adventure! Keep living an amazing life, Sarah!! 👏🏼👏🏼
Stumbled on your video as I was watching content on the Cape Wrath trail... I really enjoyed it! Informative, down to Earth and funny. More inspriration to get my arse up there and experience it for myself. Subscribed and thanks.
Fantastic to see you again. Had given up hope of seeing you again! You are so inspiring, been backpacking most of my life, now mid 60s. But still packing! PLEASE do more films of your journeys on RU-vid.....and you are very lovely! Thankyou.
Thanks for this, the haze sponges look like a good addition for my next hike for tent and body drying, that's great. FYI I have always used a two person tent because thats what my partner and I have!! I use it when I go solo because I don't have the money to buy a one person tent, but ONE DAY!!!!!! I also take a light sarong, its very versatile and useful for all number of things, its my sheet when its too warm for sleeping bag, my towel (and has been my "emergency modesty wrap" as well when suddenly there were people trekking past and I was butt naked drying off next to a river haha. On a couple of hikes when the weather was blistering (YES!!! In Scotland) its proved useful for draping, wet, over my head under my cap and around my body like a cape to keep the sun off me and to cool me down. It dries off quickly too. I've even wrapped it around me as a skirt when I had to wash my shorts once or twice, so I never leave home without it!! I have the Sawyer mini water filtration system which I love, but thinking of the Platypus when its time to replace as I believe it filters a whole lot faster. Mind you, having said that, it give s me a good long time to soak my feet in the icy waters while filtering. My basic pack weight is always around 12kg with a few days dehydrated food but before water and I don't think I'll ever get it down any lower until I buy a lighter sleeping mat. Well done you!! And no, you didn't need the thermos haha!
Just come across your channel whilst suffering with man flu! I'm planning this route next year and what an awesome resource of information, plus fun and very easy to watch. Top marks! 👌👍📸
Just stumbled on this video You crack me up with your DILLIGAF attitude. I did the trail in 1986 before it was called the CWT. I look forward to watching some more videos. Take care Cheers
Blooming heck anything you don’t pack.. the only thing you subsided with was the stove pocket rocket, haven’t got onto your wardrobe yet lol I’m 8.4kg with food 3 seasons
I've just come across your video and I must say that it covers every question and answer you need to start hiking and camping. It is very much a game of whittling down to what you need, and you explain it very well, even with the Boeing 747 overhead. A lot of other videos cover personal choice but you seem to convey the essential reasons very well. Stuff that dries, doesn't smell, tastes good and works for each trip. The cook system is always the one that gets me, as I too like my porridge and coffee in the morning. Try a S2S mug for your coffee, you'll never go back. I'll check the rest of your content now definitely. ATB Leigh....
Looks like you covered it all well and in very fine detail. Loved the outtake at the end, telling the plane to F off - I do that with people! 😂 Much respect for not going down the Amazon affiliates route. Looking forward to your videos of the trail as and when they materialise. Have a good week.
I know this video is a bit out of date - this series of videos are SO HELPFUL and I love your commentary:) a group of friends and I are planning this hike for summer of 2024… I noticed you were long leggings for the whole hike - I’m used to hiking in shorts - was it cool enough (weather wise) for long leggings to be comfortable without getting to hot? Or was that your preference because of the rain and mud?
Love your videos, shocked to hear about your sleep apnea, you are the only person I've heard experience it. I used to suffer from it regularly about 20 years ago interesting to hear that you think its stress related. Best wishes keep up the videos.
I've laughed, smiled and laughed some more throughout all your vids on this trail. What a great way to end it with all the tips and stuff. I feel fully prepared for my shot next month. What to take and what to leave behind is the eternal question. What if this happens, what if that happens, on and on it goes...your ideas on what's for chucking out of the 🎒 helped me be bin a few DONT NEED THAT items. I'm not taking gps... dont think its necessary. My phones crap. No gps there and to buy a Garmin or similar that's good cost a bomb. All trails downloaded map of the trail is very good. That and the waterproof Harvey map are all I'll take. You mentioned familiarising yourself with the trail. Couldn't agree more. Watching your vids on the trail has been really helpful in that respect. I know what's round the bend.well almost. Thank you so much . Keep em coming. 🙏🧗😀🤍
Fair play that pack was some carry! To pass the annual fitness test in the British Army you have to be able to complete a march of 8 miles in 2 hours carrying between 15kg and 25kg (approximately 33-55lbs) depending on the branch of the Army to which you belong. Infantry carry the full 25kg whereas Engineers and Medics carry the least at 15kg. Ive always said this girl is FIT! (In more ways than one 😊). Well done girl 👍👍
By the time I put my coconut macaroons and stroop waffles in it probably was 25kg 😂 Do you get disqualified if you eat some of the weight before the end of the 8 miles? 😂 Thanks v much for watching dude 😊🙏🏻
Clicked on this thinking it was the actual CWT video, not disappointed though, really appreciate your no bullshit attitude! Will have to look for the videos now :)
I took a food flask on a (much shorter) hike recently and loved it. The same Thermos as yours, even the same colour. About 400g I think but it's really handy having flexibility about when you eat - you can make your coffee and porridge in the morning, and get a few miles under your belt before having the porridge if you want to.
Love your videos! Also LOVE that youre not supporting amazon and the consumtion-society just to make as much easy money as possible. I really appreciate that youre thinking environmental friendly, we need more of that in the hiker/youtube world! And btw is that vivobarefoot boots? Maybe you mentioned it, but in that case i missed it! Greetings from Sweden!
Great effort. I have had a good foot tip that can cut down on your bulk that you were carrying. Get a zip lock freezer bag which is big enough to fit your foot in. Fill it to about 1/4 with talcum/foot powder. When you come to admin your feet just put your foot inside the bag and apply the powder. This keeps the powder all in one place, reduces waste and is easier to pack as you do not have a plastic bottle to carry around. Lastly, I was always told spend my money on good boots and sleeping system as if you are not in one, you are in the other, but I think you have this already in hand. You could add a bivi bag which you keep your bag (no compression sac) in which means that it will be waterproofed in your pack. It will slightly increase your bulk though.
Great video, really enjoyed it. I'd like to get out and do a long hiking trail myself but with children and pets I'm a little too tied. Will have to make do with day hikes and camping in my wood. :)
I have watched every one of your CWT videos. Inspiring, funny and moving (Auld Lang Syne). Wish I’d been even half as intrepid as you when I was young! Thank you x
Hilarious - brilliant, I’m planning my cape wrath trail trip for next year and your video coupled with haze outdoors have already helped with my kit choices. Thanks.. donation made 👍
I have those Alpkit poles as well , they are so well made , well worth the cost & think most other poles are so overrated & cost a lot more. I also walked a lot without poles but since having them, i always use them even for shorter walks. Use them for running as well. Alpkit have done a magnificent job on those poles, so would highly recommend.
Wow what an absolutely fantastic, informative and amusing video. This is one I hope to do at some point. And what a small world. I almost choked on my brandy when you said your brother lives in East Kilbride. I was brought up in Calderwood and now live in Whitehills. Thank you again for an amazing video 👏
Fantastic video. I cannot help thinking there is a better solution to midges. Maybe a device that emits a sound frequency they avoid. Perhaps a high frequency that is beyond human hearing. I need to do some research on it.
I never use Talc anymore. I discovered a medicated for powder works much better. It's more absorbent and looks after your feet better. I also pour some of the powder into a zipped compression bag I have. Put my foot in and then massage & rub all over, that way you don't spill it over you tent floor. Something I read Ed Stafford did on his Amazon trek. I've used this way in the Himalayas, Lakes, Scotland but I'm lucky I don't get blisters. Certainly does revitalise your feet though
Bog Myrtle works great for midgies, If you know what to look for, And their is a distillery over that side of the country that also makes a traditional beer from it too, 100s of years before hops became a thing..
You crack me up, in a good way😂😂. Actually watching you I can now understand what my mates have to put up with me😂😂. I do a lot of "adventure" motorbike riding here in Oz and only carry 15kgs of gear. I couldn't imagine carrying all that on my back. At least it'll keep you fit lol.
I'm so glad you're back! Easily my favorite outdoors RU-vidr 👍🏻 I'm thinking of starting to play a drinking game everytime you talk ' trail essentials' I fear for my liver.
Definitely in my top 10 of RU-vid watching. Very high quality filming/editing. Excellent fun watching you laugh alone on some desolate hill (& at yourself). Have a coffee on me. Cheers
I think a lot of people would be interested to hear more about those minimalist boots and how they stand up to serious hiking. I've been thinking about getting some for a while but often read that they aren't robust enough. If you keep walking in them please let us know how they last. Thanks.
That was a brilliant gear video and really useful cheers 👍. Glad to know I'm not the only heavy weight packer ! Looking forward to the trail video. Keep up the good work dude 🙂
Why can't I get to see the cwt on you tube ? I love your vids especially the 1st 2 cwt series but now I can't find the rest ? Shine on you crazy diamond 💎
While walking up and down the North Cape...I had eight months of harsh weather conditions. But two months of MusquitoMad ESS in Finland. And locals did give me a mesh Anorak...works very good, did combine it with a long sleeve blouse otherwise it get itchy
This is excellent info, thank you! I am hoping to do the Cape Wrath trail in the spring. Look forward to seeing any videos you did from the trail, and importantly, which routes you took 😀
You had me at "squirty shits".🤣 Funniest, but best backpacking content I've seen in a while that kept me laughing. New subscriber from Tennessee, US here.
I love the vids brilliant I'm in stitches sometimes ur humour is mad as hatter like mine my fave at the minute for sure. Were do you get your energy it's endless lol
Love your CWT videos. I walked it myself and busted my knee after completing 70% of the route. I made some bad decisions route wise in correlation to my injuries so it was great to see you make the good ones and complete the ordeal. It was by far the most intense and gratifying experience in my whole life. Actually, I just hopped by to ask what the brand name of your shoes is. I missed you saying it in the video. They will make a great gift for my girlfriend since I am looking for minimalistic boots for her.
Hate to get all mansplaney, but there is a big radio beacon in brecon, that lots of the planes set their radio compasses to and tune in to for navigation and fly over. Love your vids...you and those two mad Welsh people with the camper van (king'ing it) crack me up.
