Section 2 of my 550 mile hike across Michigan's Upper Peninsula on the North Country Trail.
Section two is on the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, from Munising to Grand Marais. It's the only national park in the UP and the 200-foot sandstone cliffs above Lake Superior here and unlike anywhere else in the world.
If you're interested in supporting my channel and want to see more content from the UP consider buying my book, "Cultivating Intent." It's a collection of photos and short stories with a little woods wisdom mixed in. That book and many more can be found on my website here.

I so agree...Backpacking is a symbolic thing. So, so true. Alex...you rock! Your editing, videography, commentary is off the charts good. I have a lot to learn. I will be v-logging my Appalachian Trail thru-hike, beginning in February of 2020. I will be watching your videos to gain a perspective that I have been missing. I SUBSCRIBED to your channel, clicked the bell and liked this awesome video.

thanks! I enjoy the whole process of it, hiking, filming, and editing. Even if it is a lot of work something ha. Good luck on your AT hike! If you ever need someone to edit your videos let me know. I recently started editing videos for other hikers too.

@@kampersadventures958 Usually they will mail their SD cards to me when they get into town. then I import the footage and mail the cards back to a town ahead of them. They don't have to worry about all the time it takes to edit and we can release videos while they are still hiking.

Thanks for the terrific videos! I know you did this five years ago, but I only just came across these now. I subscribed and hopefully you are still making great treks? I did not check your other videos yet, but I will continue with them after I do a few things that I need to take care of now. Planning on making some of these hikes by segments this year. how can you get back to your vehicle? Are there shuttle services that are affordable and reliable?
@WildernessMindset
@WildernessMindset Год назад
Thanks! There are no shuttle services that I'm aware of other than maybe in Pictured Rocks. That might have changed by now though. For all these sections I had a friend help out with shuttling cars.

I have hiked the trails at Pictured Rocks a lot. I love this area. Your cinematography on this is really cool. I love the time lapse of the sunset from the cliffs. Are you using your DSRL for those and the walking talking scenes? Do you charge your camera on the trail and how? Thx!
@WildernessMindset
@WildernessMindset 3 года назад
thanks! The camera work keeps me occupied ha. I use the DSLR for everything except the talking. For that I was using a gopro. It wasn't the best and for the last episode or two I had an external mic on the gopro.

This is one of the best videos on youtube. I'm getting a little stir crazy with the quarantine and looking to get out, just got myself a hammock with a rain fly/ bug net and a stove on amazon. My Dad is UPSing me a 55 liter osprey pack and a down bag. Think I'm all set. What part of the trail do you think will have the least amount of snow on it right now? I am out of Marquette but willing to travel. I was thinking maybe section 5 on your map would be a good bet? Are there any loops you recommend hiking in the UP? as pick-up and drop off will be an issue for me. Thanks for making these videos and for any info you may be able to provide.

Awesome I'm glad to hear you're getting into it. I just moved to Montana in November so I haven't been keeping up with snow conditions in the UP. Unfortunately spring hiking in the UP can be pretty sloppy. I would think that going east of Marquette would be your best bet. Maybe do a loop around Tahquamenon Falls, but you'll probably still find snow in most places.
@kylekarwowski2642
@kylekarwowski2642 4 года назад
Thanks for the suggestions. I think I may wait a week and hopefully we will get some melt off and then I'll try looping around Tahquamenon. I may spend a night on the upper Carp river in Mqt sometime this week just as a test run. How do you like Montana compared to the UP? I have only been there a couple times, briefly each time.
@WildernessMindset
@WildernessMindset 4 года назад
@@kylekarwowski2642 Nice, yeah that's a good idea to stay close and do a few trips around marquette as trial runs. I love the UP but I was looking for some bigger territory. Montana definitely has that, the terrain out here is much more serious and challenging.

Awesome video! Makes me want to go hike that area. How were the bugs that time of year?
@WildernessMindset
@WildernessMindset 6 лет назад
It's definitely underrated but that bugs can be horrible depending on where you are. Just bring some DEET and sleeves haha

what does it cost. do you need permits and such?
@WildernessMindset
@WildernessMindset 6 лет назад
the pictured rocks national lakeshore and the porcupine mountains state park are the only parts in the UP that you need permits for. The rest is free. I think pictured rocks was $5 a night for backcountry camping.
