2021 notes: This was my first attempt at a video (so pardon the shaky camera, wind noise and severe lack of safety/preparation!) but as my first solo mountain climb, and the first summit of my 2020 'Mountain a Month' challenge, I wanted to document the experience as best I could at the time.
Glad to say my camera skills and hiking skills/experience have improved greatly since this was filmed.

Brilliant Grace for doing what many would never have the courage to do, venturing out on their own, as a relative novice. You had a mini epic but you got back safe and sound and no doubt learnt so much from your experience.....planning and navigation. You've probably done it by now but get yourself on a navigation course or two and develop sound navigation skills. It really will open up a whole new world 🙂 Your vlog will no doubt have helped many others in realising that it's not a walk in the park.

Solo hiking is something I'm really getting into this year, I havent done any mountains or wild camps yet but watching your videos has given me a right confidence boost. Your journey through it all is really helping me prepare!

Good news is you made it! Compass is a good tool as you at least know the general direction you need to go on your way back if something happens. Trust me you were more prepared than some I’ve come across.

Exactly the same happened to me and hence why I started my RU-vid channel to show people around in a straightforward manner. There can be a lot of machismo in climbing and I feel that can put a lot of us off so that’s why I’m honest in my films and really appreciate something real and positive like this. I enjoyed watching this, and have subsequently watched your videos as you've gained experience on the mountains. Experience with a map and compass really is worth getting, and an OS Explorer map is worth every penny; as well as on the hill sometimes it's nice to open one out of an evening and plan your next adventures. Cader Idris is well worth a return visit in good conditions, I climbed it on a fine but surprisingly cold October day with snow on the top.

There is an old Polish saying: end of the tongue for a guide... As long as you find people and you talk to them you are fine. People often help, which you have proven well. As per maps they are priceless. Even print out from the net. Great views. Your hair got lovely curly fashion after a while, which made you super attractive (in my eyes at least). I would try limit depending on electric gadgets. Splendid effort! You learnt tones!

Just found your channel and this video. Climbed Cadair with friends same weekend every year for about 10 years - a long time ago now. Camped in the farmer's field (can't remember the name), then steeply up beside the stream, anti-clockwise round the lake, then steeply up the right-hand corner scramble. Turned right to the top, then straight on and gently down to the same stream again...It looks like you at least went UP the same way, if not down! Map and compass - essential skill, and so liberating! Hope you have lots more adventures...try the Lakes, if you haven't already!

Ha ha, I did exactly the same as you when I first started out. I had to walk into Dolgellau and just managed to catch the last bus back round to the Minifford car park. Bus driver laughed and said if he had a pound for everyone he's picked up who has done that, he could easily of retired by now. Don't feel bad just take it as a lesson learnt. I can navigate in the dark like a ninja now lol.

I think that would slightly worry me too is that it's so easy to get lost especially if you try and retrace your steps going back the same way. It always looks different. Ive been up the Malvern Hills several times and almost every time i try and go back the same way i take a different route by mistake

Well done. Good video for beginners on Cader. Cader can be a tricky one. Lakes on either side can mess with your navigation and if the cloud is down then the lack of clears paths near the top can disorientating. However, you made it and fellow, hikers, bikers and runners (that’s me) will help, as in your case. Sometimes I feel people don’t want to ask for directions, but it’s vital and someone with good knowledge will get you down safely. I ran Cader a few weeks ago and me and my dog were dive bombed by a peregrine at the top of the Stone Chute, first time that’s ever happened!!!!

You did it, it's always worth taking a map of some form for the area your in, or take a photo of the info boards as there is normally one with a map.

I did the same on Glyder Fawr, Glyder fach lol. Started from Llyn Ogwen which is north of the mountains and came back down the south side near Pen Y pass which is the start of Snowdon lol. Had a lift otherwise wouldve been like 7-8miles walk to car lol

I know I'm 3 years too late with this comment but getting lost on the top of Cadair in poor weather is surprisingly easy to do. I have relatives who live in the area (Machynlleth) so I've done Cadair 20+ times over the years - the last time I was up there in May there was really poor visibility and I started off down the wrong path, luckily I'm familiar with the place so realised my error after a minute or two but I'm sure dozens have made the same mistake.

Well done !! I've done Cader Idris 4 times once 3 years ago I set off in June at 02am to catch a stunning Sunrise. There is a stunning circular route around Cader Idris.Like you I tend to walk on my tod but never start a hike without a map and compass.Look forward to seeing your future climbs 😀

Well done, a good effort and very brave to post this showing the whole experience warts and all. Just going to reiterate what has been said previously about carrying a map. I notice from later videos that you've downloaded maps to your phone so you aren't relying on mobile signal but a map and compass are worth their weight in gold. If you are using the OS Maps service you can also print out maps of your route which is something I've been doing recently for trail runs, you can even mark the route on them and any points of interest, bearings etc. Enjoy the remainder of your hikes, only a few more months left of the year.

Take a mobile with you. Even if there's no signal you can pick up the GPS satellites and, if you download maps in advance, you can see exactly where you are in real time even in fog/blizzard conditions. That wasn't possible in the olden days, which is why less than half the mountaineers returned home alive back then.

Please learn to map read...... 😱 It's an amazing hobby and that mountain is one of the best. But it's so dangerous and I'd hate for you to be put in danger for lack of such a simple skill... Keep going and we'll done 👌👏

Great channel. Made the same mistake on the same mountain 13 years ago and ended up in Abergynolwyn hours later. Was 16 at the time and my mum was waiting for me and my friend in the Cadair car park. No phone service until we got to the town so obviously she assumed the worst 😅

I only come across ur vids few days back , and I took up mountain walking last year may the high street I've never done it solo but my intention was to ,I won't and try to avoid bad weather ,very very brave especially on your own , but u have learnt so much trike and error ,I've tried map reading but it's difficult ,I plan all my walks before I go but I still make mistakes, one thing I know is never underestimate nature and the power of change in the weather ,but ur vids are boss

So I grew up 5 minutes from cadair Idris in a village called corris and know it very well. I moved away from the area earlier this year and miss it terribly! I'm feeling very home sick now...

Love Cadair as it's less popular than Snowdon, but as you crest and see the lake, it's beautiful. Hard climb, but well worth it. Good work

Get yourself a Garmin. I’m ex-Marine and I never take a map, I just download a gpx file to my Garmin watch and it’s never failed me. Well done on this climb, it’s not an easy assent on any day let alone low cloud👍

Well done !! Much harder on uour own I did Snowdon in 2018 up the Miners Path .. climbed up Cadaer Idris this week and took the Minffordd Path and around the circular route which was 6.8 miles in all !! Much harder than Snowdon i think 🤔

I’ve just started solo mountain climbing done most of the Peak District, but every time I’m on a trail /path im constantly wondering if I’m on the right path 😂 been using Google maps so far and signal has been ok but my luck will run out with that , I’ve downloaded most maps for offline , but need to learn how to read a map but the thing with a map is it’s just a picture and doesn’t tell me where I’ve wondered too

Im hoping to go up all the mountains in wales by the end of next year only done cader idris and snowdon so far this seems much harder than snowdon and this is near my caravan barmouth i fancy going up here again sometime

Forget downloading maps...grab yourself a decent compass and a proper map and learn the basics. You'll probably enjoy it more. Tech will always go wrong. Believe me.

It probably didn't help that you had headphones in, either. It puts you in your own world and lets your mind wander elsewhere. Far better to be focused on the task at hand. I'm not sure why you would want to screen out the wonderful sound of nature anyway if you're out and about in the countryside. Anyway, good to see you made it.
