The California family and their dog that were found dead on a hiking trail in the picturesque Sierra National Forest, died of hyperthermia and possible dehydration, the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office announced at a press conference on Thursday. Triple-digit temperatures that day soared to nearly 110 degrees. The lack of shade and water was determined to be the cause of the tragic deaths of John Gerrish, Ellen Chung, and their baby daughter, Aurelia “Miju,” along with the family’s dog, Oksi.

For those skeptics, I hiked 10+ miles a day average in 2019 over 30 national parks. In Jan, after covid hiatus, I took on the strenuous loop in Chiricahua. It was 70's when I started but snow/hail halfway. Constant elevation gain/drop, temperature changes. I barely made it with all water and energy bars consumed. Hyperthermia will shut down your lung like panic attack, exhaustion/dehydration will confuse and disorientate you more. I have tremendous respect for the nature and will always do.

Yosemite Park, California is much different than Arizona. I've hiked both areas, they have different requirements needing to be addressed. Experiencing a hike with my 3yr old in Yosemite, it seems HIGHLY UNLIKELY a DOG, A HEALTHY MAN, WIFE, and BABY die taking a hike on a fine afternoon in Yosemite National Park. When I reached our destination I became disorientated and suddenly completely blind, passed out and an ambulance was called. I didn't even feel thirsty. I thought drinking 2 litres was pretty good. They decided to hike a trail over some mountains to the other side. They came to a waterfall drop of 70'..... he thought he could find a way down..... he lost footing off this cliff and dropped to his death. GF decided to get down to him and made it part way then fell herself, cracking her ankle. Many many people have weighed in on lots of things they could of done. It's a really bad situation to be in, so the best way to survive is to avoid putting yourself in that position in the first place (e.g. check weather forecast, don't bring the baby/dog, know the area and don't stray too far from where you can seek help, tell loved ones where you're going and when you expect to be back, don't hike alone, bring a sunhat and excess water, plan your hike for the coolest hours of the day, etc.)

For those saying “ why didn’t they turn back” …they walked 6 out of the 8 miles, if they turned around they woulda had to walk another 6 instead of just finishing the last 2. I don’t know why people can’t understand that, unreal.

It's unreal that parents were too stupid to realize that hiking in an exposed trail on a hot day with a baby and dog is a bad idea. Stupid parents causing the deaths of innocent lives. Or I should say stupid people, as real parents would have more comment sense.

A hiking noop here but what I'm understanding from you is that when one finishes a hike , in this case , at the end of the 8 miles, there will be a water source? Is this always the case?

So stupid, senseless, bez of 'the 2 more miles' they killed themselves , their infant and a dog.

Definitely one of the worst ways to die. I can speak from experience that heat exhaustion sucks. ALWAYS make sure you have enough water for everyone

Reminds me of the girl who went on her first date with the cop hiking and she died from the heat while he continued on, but he didn't die! This is a tough one for me to believe this cause of death for all three and the dog. These were parents with a baby, I'm sure at the slightest discomfort in temperatures or if the kid just fused and fused they'd of done a B line back. I've read stories where ppl survived way more treacherous conditions in the arctic or out in deserts for days, these ppl were only out for hours. Something else I'm thinking happened and it perhaps can't be explained

You need to learn about hyperthermia and dehydration and how quickly it can overwhelm you….and kill you. Please stop reading more into this than what it was.

Teresa S lol to assume I don't know what hypothermia is, is a pretty ignorant assumption. The guy was in a tshirt clearly the temps were not freezing. Maybe you should check the weather in that region that day and see if you still believe the said outcome.

Why take a one year old out in 100 degree weather on an 8 mile long hike with little to NO water?? Anyone who is experienced knows how much water to bring. Irresponsible and tragic.

The only thing that matters here is that this family lost their lives and it’s a true tragedy. Why must we judge the ones lost? Oh they should have done this or shouldn’t have done that. Pray for their souls and pray for their families and friends. 🙏🏼

I agree. Hindsight is always 20/20, and making disparaging remarks now is not going to bring them back. Such a loss is heartbreaking. May they rest in peace, and may the fact that they seemed to have happy lives leading up to this tragic event and that they passed together give comfort to their loved ones.

Several conditions that can occur when your body's heat-regulation system can't handle the heat in your environment. You're said to have severe hyperthermia if your body temperature is above 104°F (40°C). By comparison, a body temperature of 95°F (35°C) or lower is considered hypothermic.
