Hi guys!
This video is about my fantastic experience hiking the Alta Via 1 in the Italian Dolomites with my family. The Alta Via 1 is known as the Dolomites High Route 1 and is one of Italy’s most famous hiking trails. Thanks to their sublime, monumental, and colorful landscapes, these mountains feature some of the most stunning mountain landscapes in the world.
Hiking the Alta Via 1 is an experience I’ll never forget and something I would recommend for everyone to do - Grazie Dolomiti!
I really hope you enjoy this video and that it hopefully can be used as an inspiration for your next adventure. Don't forget to leave a comment, like and subscribe for more content in the future!

Thank you for the awesome video! I’m planning my AV1 for July 2024. I’m curious why you ended the hike after San Sebastiano as opposed to going to Pian de Fontana/La Pissa/Belluno. I have seen others end at Agordo as well. Just curious if there’s a reason the final section is skipped. Thanks again!

Hi, Thanks for your question! Sounds like an amazing idea, it’s incredible. The plan was originally exactly what you write, but due to the weather and a section of cables we chose to finish in Agordo instead. I wish you an amazing tour 🏔️

You exited at Agordo which is 15 miles shy of the 'official' end at La Pissa bus stop. By doing that you miss the spectacular Forcella de Zita Sud just after La Pramperet refugio.
@martinbundgaard97
@martinbundgaard97 2 года назад
Hi Graeme, That’s very true and unfortunate. We were forced to exit at Agordo because of bad weather conditions. Furthermore we were also told that the terrain was very steep and that it would be a challenge for especially my parents to complete it. However I would have wished to complete the whole trip including the Forcella de Zita ⛰

Hi :) beautiful video! May I ask which month of 2022 did you do the Alta Via 1? I will be doing it in August 2023 and my concern is currently the clothing situation in relation to rain and possibly cold air. I am not sure if long waterproof trousers are a need during August etc.. very confused! Any tips or feedback are greatly appreciated! thank you

Hi Mariana, It really is! I would say that the summer months may be the best and most beautiful. If you want to go you’ll have to decide which refugios you want to stay in and then book them - you can find informations here rifugios.net/alta-via-1.html 👍🏼

@martinbundgaard97 2 года назад
Hi Kathryn, Thank you I’m happy to inspire and hear that! We went last year in July and the weather was changing a lot especially when going on the higher passes. My advice is to bring enough clothing - better safe than sorry, so that you can put it on or take it off depending on the current weather situation ☀️🏔

Thank you very much Charlie, Actually I have planned the trip almost myself, but I can definitely recommend the guidebook 'Alta Via 1 - Trekking in the Dolomites' by Cicerone. Here you will find detailed stage descriptions illustrated with clear mapping. There are also comprehensive notes on the huts the route passes, with contact details and tips on facilities available. //Martin Bundgaard 🌳

Hi Martin. This is a fantastic video and thanks for sharing your journey. Do you mind sharing how many months ahead you started planning the trip? The rifugios you stayed during this hike look amazing and I heard that they can be booked very early. Thanks for your help.
@martinbundgaard97
@martinbundgaard97 2 года назад
Hi Yi-Chun, Thank you, Alta Via 1 is outstanding and I’m hoping for you to witness the Dolomites too! We started planning this trip half a year before, making the route and connecting it with the refugios. The refugios can be booked very early yes and they can also be very tough to get in contact with as they open up in different times at the year. However it’s just about keep trying and be early out, to catch your spot ⛰ //Martin Bundgaard 🌳

Hi ProgTom, In my opinion Alta Via 1 is doable even when fearing heights a little. There’s only a few exposed places on the whole trek and nothing really crazy at all. I think you should go for it, sure you won’t regret that - have a good one 🏔️☀️

Hi! I planned the trip by checking out the different refugios and stages on the trek - you can buy a book with a lot of information about that 💪🏼 The worst part was supposed to be the second last day with very steep terrain which we ended up skipping, because of bad weather ⛈

Hi Ryan, We carried around 8 kilos each in our backpacks to make sure we could change clothes according to the weather ⛈ And no we only stayed at the refugios, but we saw some people wildcamping - looks amazing, definitely gonna do that one day. Also the free bivouacs are really worth considering and trying out! 🏔️🇮🇹

@martinbundgaard97
@martinbundgaard97 2 года назад
Good question, I’m happy to help you out! I would probably try to rearrange the route a little at first and look for other refugios near to the originally planned. Otherwise maybe staying two nights at the same place or pushing through two stages in one day is an option also 💪🏼
@lavatoconpirlana
@lavatoconpirlana 2 года назад
@@ryanc4748 it's suggested to start booking you refuges 6 month prior to your departure, but anyway, let's say you happen to reach a refuge on a stormy night, they have to give you a place to sleep even if they're full, or at least direct you to the nearest refuge (in the first half the refuges can be quite close to each other). You could sleep in the winter bivouac or in the hall if you have a sleeping bag, it depends. Of course they would charge you for that, so it's better to plan ahead. This goes especially for the months of July and August.
