Hey Taylor. You've mentioned that you haven't done lots of hiking in Vermont so I'd like to recommend my favorite hike which happens to be in Vermont. It's near Killington and it's called The Canty Trail. There are streams to cross, it's a challenging hike (for me anyway) and the view is beautiful. If you take your time it's about a 3.5 hour hike round trip. There are also loads of good restaurants within a 10 minute drive afterwards. Enjoy!
cool video. Cabot as a stand alone is not one of my favorites but doing the kilkenney ridge from Waumbek up to Rogers ledge is one of the nicer hikes in the whites. Especially if you want to avoid crowds.
Yeah, I was told by another hiker to do this in the winter which I do plan on doing all of the 40 eights in the winter so if it’s not worth doing in the summer I’d rather skip that but I’m not completely sure if the road to access it is open year-round because I’ve never been on it before
The meal 2 go looks like a game changer. You can snack on it all day if you want and keep moving. Good for AT! At least the way Taylor does it......20 mile days lol. Taylor, we need better outtro's! Just sayin'.
I loved Cabot. Well I loved the trip anyway. I did an overnighter with my son and daughter at Unknown Pond and overall had great time. The Kilkenny Ridge has a whole different vibe than the rest of the Whites. Great video as always Taylor! I really enjoyed it!
Yes! I managed to get out in time haha. I got back to my car a minute late at 4:31. I think they are doing some work in the area and they've been locking the gate later than usual. Phew!
Hi Taylor. I am amazed that Kelly is able to do all 48 peaks! For example, how does she manage Adams or the Tripyramids? Do you have to carry her in places?
I've only had to carry her a handful of times. Like once on the Osceolas, Whiteface and Moriah that I can remember. Adams is one of the 4 she hasn't done yet! She can jump really high and can usually get up parts easier than I can!
Nice video! Bunnell Notch Trail is my least favorite part of that trail...late spring and summer it gets overgrown. The gem of Cabot Mountain is doing the loop and hitting up "The Horn" on the Kilkenny Ridge Trail...views are amazing! Unknown Pond area has some good overnight options and a tentsite.
People, people! Enough negativity about good ol' Mt. Cabot. I suspect a lot of Taylor's dislike has to do with getting up there late and so being worried about the gate all day. It looked like a perfectly nice hike to me-- pleasant terrain, good views from Bunnell Rock, and a cabin to check out near the top. If you hold having no view from the summit against a hike, there are an awful lot of New England mountains you're not going to like. And animals are just part of the joy. Carry bear spray for confidence. Hiking the "least favorite" 4000-footer is still better than most other things to do.
Cabot is definitely not among my favorites., but the hike is more interesting if you make it a loop via the Unknown Pond Trail. The Horn has excellent views, Unknown Pond itself is very scenic, and the Kilkenny Ridge Trail (beyond Cabot) has a pretty cool feel.
That looks like it was a great hike. Don't be afraid of the seclusion sometimes it's more safer than you think, and yes it's always good to put extra in your day back back because you never know if you're stuck.
Boo. Cabot was awesome. You should have done red line of Kilkenny ridge. Makes it far more exciting. As for the worst it’s universally accepted that isolation is by far the worst as rock ridge out is awful
Another great episode Taylor..thanks for sharing..what is the thing you are using in the back seat of your jeep to protect it from pooch paws ???? I need one....
I know what you mean back country hiking. You feel isolated and it can be eerie at times. Good for you though and thanks for the info. I can not wait for your AT trail hike coming soon👍😀I will be with you the whole way. I am not far from AT in Virginia. Looking forward to your next video👍Thank you Taylor
Great vid as always, Taylor... such a beautiful intro setting. Meredith town center along the lake...? So good of you to hike your least fav 4000 again to help Kali finish her list 😊. Luv your channel! 😎
Agree about the gate. They did keep it unlocked but closed for some time, then there were some issues and they started locking it again. Don't know the current status. I still need to do the Weeks for my NEHH and not looking forward to it. What four does Kali have left? Are you trying to get them in this year before snow or does Kali have snowshoes? Thanks for your videos. Peace, Love and Kindness.
Thanks for watching! She has Flume, Madison, Adams and Jefferson left. Not super dog-friendly hikes, but would love to get them done this year. I know she can handle it!
I'm new to backpacking and live in western Massachusetts..hoping to start hiking the 48 4000 footers next year..do you have a sequence that you'd reccomend for beginners to do the 48? Maybe a video series idea😉😉
I ended up getting a bear bell from Walmart. It really helped me lose that aniexty of any bear or animal encounters. I also hike with my dog but the bear bell works for me to ease any uneasy feelings for those shady areas.
I miss hiking. Used to love it. Got out of shape and life with autistic son happened. Was nice seeing you hike near me. I live north of Mt. Cabot in Colebrook. Plenty safe up here. There are lots of bear up here and multiple sightings of mountain lions in that area too.
Taylor if you see a bear just try to enjoy the moment. I've encountered many bears and moose in the woods and I'm still here. Most bears take off as soon as they see you. I have run into a few mama bears with cubs and I always give them lots of space because they won't take off when they see you.
Great video, really liked the unboxing. That sleeping bag liner seemed pretty thin, did you ever find out how much it adds to your sleeping bag? I have a fleece one that adds 12 degrees but is much bulkier than that one. Although the Cabot cabin looked creepy, be cool to stay that close to the summit.
I used to pheasant hunt in an area that locked the gate early on days before stocking... was always stressful trying to get out on time .... I do not miss that feeling and one time I did get a warning from a game warden. Looked like a great trail your pup... plenty of water to cool off. I'd hate that drive as it would be 4 plus hours each way from where I live....
Cabot and Waumbek are 2 of my last to do and your video about disliking Cabot actually gets me excited! That gate closing problem is legit horrible. But being remote and higher chance of encountering a big animal are things I like. And the fact that it has a cabin near the top is awesome! I think I’ll plan to drive up, sleep at the cabin then down hike and do Waumbek the next day.
Very nice. If the sleeping bag liner isn't warm enough add a cheap fleece throw into your bag. The thin ones add about 10* and the thick furry ones add about 20* of comfort. When you don't need the $5 throw, just put the throw in a hiker box. Another nice video. Good Luck, Rick
I hiked the loop 4 weeks ago was exited about it because it was my foliage hike but even with the amazing colors it was still painful and some what boring
I did Cabot on a rain day.. literally pouring when we started and it had a very magical and awesome vibe to it. Foggy forest etc. I really loved it! My least favorite peak of the 48 was probably Hale.. Tecumseh maybe second to last.. But then again I also did that when it was socked in clouds and I couldn’t see anything. But Hale wins for me
I think the way to dramatically improve the quality of the hike is to do the full loop including The Bulge, The Horn and Unknown Pond. The views from The Horn are much better that the view point you feature in the video and Unknown Pond is a really nice rest stop on your way down. That moves Cabot in the 3rd quartile for me. Now Waumbek on the other hand...
Nice video. I've hike Cabot a couple of times, one with a hiking friend in October 2013 and it snowed all day and was freezing cold. We got about a foot of snow as we were hiking. Its about a 3 1/2 drive for me 178 miles. Then I hiked it again in 2015 with my wife she needed it for the 48's and it down poured the whole day lol. By the time we got to unknown pond we were drenched to the bone so decide to just trench onward.
I like the Cairn stuff as well, check out their Unstacked auction stuff. Sometimes you can find some deals on there...Best of luck on your planned AT trip 2021 !
Thanks for sharing your hike! This least favorite hike in NH would be a top hike here in Oklahoma! :) I'd have to drive 5 hours to the Kiamichi area in SE OK to find a hike that rivals this one.
I loved Cabot. Hiked it in winter wonderland conditions though. I was told they dont close the gate in winter. Even if they wanted to it was covered in many feet of snow anyways. Nice video! I agree, the mental aspect plays a part. Mt. Garfield used to be my least favorite. I found the 5 mile long trail boring. The summit was great however... re-hiked it with a group of friends and had a blast... i dont know which is my least favorite anymore. I kinda love em all. Bondcliff is my favorite of them all though.
I really need to look into a pair of looser-fitting more "modern" pants. A little while back I basically finally gave up trying to hike in conventional hiking pants. They just never fit/moved with me the way I needed then to. I've pretty much been hiking in running tights/leggings/whatever with shorts over them lately. I noticed that the new, loose pants seem like they might be a good option when I'd rather wear actual pants. I just had my scariest animal encounter in recent memory two weeks ago. I was taking a short night hike along a sandy lake shore at midnight and I happened across an animal on the shoreline by some plants. I was sure that it was a raccoon. I turned my headlamp on high to get a better look. It wasn't a raccoon. At first I couldn't tell what it was, but all I knew was that it was looking at me, moving, and I honestly thought that it was going to come straight at me. I didn't have trekking poles or anything to try to fight this animal off. To my huge relief, this animal started quickly moving towards the lake, but not directly at me ( I was between it and the water). It turns out that it was just a big beaver trying to get to the lake to get away from me! That was probably the last animal that I was expecting to see on a Kansas lake shore in the middle of the night!
I saw my first moose when I hiked Cabot, he was just standing in the middle of the trail, didn't care that I was there, which made for a cool experience. FYI the actual summit of Cabot isn't at that sign, you have to go a little further and you'll see a cairn, and thats the true summit. Just found that out a couple months ago.
Awesome 👍 beautiful fantastic vlogging hiking and scenery, I really love this hike, I actually walked up on a moose here, it just stared at me and I at him, he walked off, all the very best.
I walked up on a moose on Twinway, I think it was Twinway, I scared it and it scared me. For the next mile, I made as much noise as I could so as to not surprise any other wildlife.
I was going to hike this on Thursday. Now you have me second guessing my choice. Supposed to rain in the afternoon anyway, so perhaps I just do something closer instead. As far as wildlife encounters, there really isn't too much to be concerned with. The exception being a mother bear with cubs. I had my bear encounter on Mt Roberts... right near that first lookout area. As soon as it realized I was there, it turned and ran away.
There’s where I saw my first bear! I’m not afraid of the wildlife being dangerous, I’m just paranoid they’re going to appear right in front of me and scare the 💩 out of me 😆
Interesting video! Based on the flavors, those ‘meals’ seem more like desserts! 😀 Also, I was going to ask if you could have parked outside the gate, but at the end you showed you had to drive a bit to get out. That would have been strange (to put it mildly) to be “stuck” there.
I can see why you don’t like it. Mediocre pay-off & I’d be super stressed out about the gate. Also interested to see how you like the liner. I was double bagging it camping a couple weeks ago & that maybe a better option for me.
My least favorite as well! They never lock that gate though - they just close it, you can always just open it back up to get out (and then close it again).
Haaaa my favorite nahamsha video so far, well one o fem for sure...the dislike on the thumbnail was an eye catcher coming from someone who is NEVER negative about anything ! And one ongoing appeal you have in every hike is the illusion that your dog is pulling you along the trail....Kellie looks like a speed boat with the people towing a water skiier behind her....I could tell you a couple of bear stories but you'd stop reading this if you already havent...all the female near encounters I've heard of.... happen at the same girls summer campwhen they were out jogging, when they reverse direction to return to the camp they have a friend following and it's either may or June which is mating season....bear have scent smelling capabilities that I could write a book about...ok anyways.. I almost forgot, Feb. Appalachian trail hike, YOUR NUTS !!!...and the water and mtns setting where you started this video was so beautiful...ok I'm done rambling, stay safe and looking forward to the next one...
Haven’t done this one yet but now I’m definitely not looking forward to it 😆 also shouldn’t you use a sleeping bag liner for the AT the entire time to keep your bag clean? Or is that not a big issue?
Not sure if they are worth the money. But I really liked having one on that hike. Instead of over packing a bunch of different snacks to make sure I don’t get hungry, I liked only having to pack that one bar and getting full from having it
