We have been prepping for Mt. Whitney the last couple of months and dreaming of it for much longer. This is the highest peak in the lower 48 states standing at 14,505 ft. The journey was humbling and we wanted to share some tips for a successful summit while it’s fresh in our minds!
SUMMIT WHITNEY in two days:
⭐️ HYDRATE - we drank a gallon of water everyday for at least the week leading up to the summit day. Drink often while hiking as well as it helps with altitude sickness.
⭐️ FUEL - you’re burning a lot of calories so make sure to eat enough. Bring things you WANT to eat on the trail but also things that are quick and easy to put down like energy gels or protein bars.
⭐️ CONDITIONING - you should do as much cardio as you can with your backpack at the weight you expect to carry on the trail. Stairs, longer hikes with 4,000+ ft elevation gain and leg strengthening exercise are all important.
⭐️ACCLIMATE - we live at sea level in WA so it was hard for us to train for that altitude. We did our best just trying to get our cardio in. We did arrive at the Whitney Portal a day before and hiked to Lone Pine Lake at 10,000 ft. Then, we slept at Whitney Portal (8,000 ft) to help acclimate as well.
⭐️ SLOW & steady pace was our focus. The key for me was to not let my heart rate go over a certain number and to not over exert myself and burn out. Honestly the trail was never really steep at all but the altitude effected me quite a bit. Who cares if people pass you! Take breaks often.
⭐️ CAMP - a lot of people do this in one day starting usually around midnight. I am so glad we were able to take our time and do this in two days. We slept at Trail Camp about 6 miles in and were able to further acclimate at 12,000ft which I think helped! On summit day, we started at 3am and got back to our car at 4pm.
⭐️ VISUALIZE - honestly, visualizing myself up there and having a PURPOSE for doing this was huge motivation. For me, I kept saying to myself “for Vesper” (my puppy that passed away a couple of months ago).
Let us know if you have any other questions or tips to share!

You captured the breathtaking landscape. Of the tree line hike before Outpost camp. Best Video of Whitney Ive seen so far. Did you position your camera on a rock and recorded yourself hiking??? How??

Thank you! That’s pretty much what we did, but with a lightweight tripod.

Great video! On the day you submitted did you leave your tents and full size packs at trail camp and return to them after the summit?
@chasethealberts
@chasethealberts Месяц назад
Yes, we did! Just make sure there’s absolutely no food anywhere, or you’ll have holes and critters in your tent. We left the tent wide open when we went for the summit.

Congrats on the climb! Where did you get the Mt Whitney sign from? Was it already up there?

Yes actually, there were a few there just waiting for you.

Great video John, and congrats to both of you! My wife and I are going in a few weeks for our second attempt to reach the hut, we learned some hard lessons on our first try which we've spent many months correcting. I'm curious, did your wife get sick from something she ate or was that altitude sickness? And were either of you taking Diamox?
@chasethealberts
@chasethealberts Год назад
Thank you! She got sick entirely from the altitude. She wasn’t tired from the hike, it was all just the oxygen levels that made her sick. The energy gel wasn’t the main cause but it didn’t help. We didn’t take Diamox but have heard good things. Ibuprofen helped some, and also people recommend taking it the week leading up to your hike. We will try this next time. Have fun and start early! Most people had to turn back because of lightning that day.

@@chasethealberts I'm assuming you were up pretty high at that point in the video, did she struggle much going down? And at what point on the descent was she like "I feel normal again!". We fought a bout with altitude sickness recently on a nearby mountain and are doing all we can to not let that be the reason we don't summit this time around.
@chasethealberts
@chasethealberts Год назад
@@LegoDad She felt really nauseous when we woke up in the morning, and it was off and on until the summit. The way down she felt so much better, and we were distracted with the thunder cracking around us. She felt totally normal when we got back to trail camp.

Nice work! What is your trick for drying off quickly after all your wild swims?
@chasethealberts
@chasethealberts 2 года назад
To be honest, I haven’t figured that one out yet. Usually just a towel and dry clothes ASAP!

Which women hiking shoes you wear for the Mt Whitney? Boots or trail running shoes?
@chasethealberts

It totally depends on the season. We were fine in trail runners, but that’s not going to be the case 9 months of the year!

Actually, no not that I can think of, can you name a few you’d recommend? We live in Washington, and Mt Rainier is pretty technical.

@@chasethealberts Mauna Kea is a neat state high point that actually starts below sea level. They have a Visitor Center & a gift shop. Mount Elbert is also another state high point that’s also worth checking out. Its not technical at all.

What size packs did you two use?
@chasethealberts
@chasethealberts 4 месяца назад
I used a 55 liter, bear cans are required if you’re camping so you need plenty of space. You also have to pack out human waste, so plan for that too 😷
