The beard is looking good! I have only been over 10k a few times and I completely understand the headache. Thank you for sharing the views, it looked pretty awesome up there! I loved the shot of the elevation Chipmunk ha.
Thanks! I remembered you praising the area in your videos which drew me up there. I imagine you guys didn't have any issues with the altitude since you acclimated as you hiked.
Cracking hike Seth! Never been at that elevation and it’s way higher than anything we have here in Scotland! You looked tired towards the end and you could hear it in your voice!! Well done mate! The video looked tremendous 👍👍👍👍Paulo
Saw that on your Strava, The video came out awesome. I used to go to So Cal regularly for busineess in the 90s, but I wasn't into hiking back then. That looks like a good one to do after you've been in the area for while. The highest I have ever hiked to was 6,643 feet, in Clingmans Dome. Its the highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The asterisk is that most of that gain was in the RV to the parking lot and only about 350 feet of gain was while hiking. So Mt Washington is the really my highest true hike as well. thanks for sharing!
I hear you John - I took a bunch of work trips 20 years ago when I when I was sedentary. Looking back I missed out some exploration opportunities. I'm trying to make up for it now!
Yeah some surprisingly high peaks in Southern California. And so interesting - being twice as high as the Whites but such a different landscape up high.
That was awesome dude! The views and nature. The ending with the purple sky and that yellow(ish) tree, is definitely a photograph. :) I gotta visit the US again. Just need the kids to get a bit older :)
Killer views up there! I’m glad that you didn’t suffer any worse effects after continuing on past the initial altitude symptoms. I’ve been taught lessons by altitude before as well, the brain can do funny things with lack of oxygen.
Yep, I won't be doing that again. Beautiful country but I can't say I really enjoyed the hike all that much. Next time I'll plan to camp and split the hike up.
This was really cool to see! Been running on dry warm SoCal trails for 4 months but never on real mountains so the pine trees and snow looked really cool. I'm hoping to do this one while I'm out there. I feel yoi on the altitude as my Dad and I did Mauna Kea yesterday and the altitude crushed us.
Awesome ! Been out that way a few times, climbed Mt Baldy, and a couple other 10,000 footers in the San Gabriel Mountains. And The Yosemite area. Honestly, I found them way easier than the Whites ! Switchbacks ? We don’t have those in the Whites ! LOL Cheers !
I know that high altitude feeling for sure after time in areas of both Ecuador and Peru! Literally, takes your breath away...oh, and the headaches and trying to sleep! Yikes! Those views in that wonderful sunshine are sure rewarding though! Awesome!! Bruce and Otis
What a day for you. I wish I had known about that place when I was out that way visiting my stepson that lived nearby. Mom was with and I think she would have enjoyed the challenge too. Oh well we went to Yosemite, and I have to say that wasn't so bad. Then off to Palo Alto for Whiskey Hill Redwood Run.
I actually thought about Yosemite for this trip. I had a rental car after all. But I decided I didn't want to spend much of the time driving and I think it was the right choice. It would have been too much. But I'll get there someday!
I only made it to high creek I was exhausted started feeling dizzy so turned back. Your video was trouble work going up when you walk pass your camera then got to go back to get it.. hard work great video
Awesome video! A little jealous of those temps! I love the slight desert feel of the trail. Love the rocks and large trees, and your little lunch friend Haha!! Did the altitude affects wear off as soon as you descended or did it take longer into the night? Thanks for the video!! I hope to do more hikes out of state this year.
It took a while. I felt like garbage most of the way down and on to the hotel. I fell asleep almost immediately for two hours. When I woke up I felt mostly better and went and got some food. By morning I was right as rain. If you like the desert just wait for my next one when I go to Joshua Tree!
@RhodySeth That’s so rough though, makes me nervous to try higher elevation mountains. My body is so sensitive to things as it is… I would have to make a multi day of it. Glad you were able to rest and feel better.
Beautiful video! You out there for work again? You've really got around to many different places this year. Alter sacrifice 🤣 That's some high elevation for a flat lander without acclimating - that's my biggest concern hiking out west.
Yeah I had a conference in San Diego last week so I flew out a few days early to get some hiking in. Could resist that opportunity! But yeah the altitude was definitely tough. I don't think you'd need to worry too much from a thru-hike perspective. I think the climb from the desert to the higher points naturally takes care of most of the acclimatizing.
My first time up San G I had the headache start at the same point you did. But later trips were fine. I’ve done Whitney after as a day trip coming from sea level (in fact I’ve never once acclimated). It was a bit slower than I expected but not terrible. I think the most fun 14’r hike in CA is Langley up Old Army Pass (when clear of snow). Just a cool area and the trail is easy on the feet. I tried the BeFree as a water filter but have since went with the Platypus Quickdraw, the flow is way faster and you don’t waste nearly as much time filtering water.
My highest altitude was 14K+ on Pikes Peak, but I drove up there. I was getting light headed walking around the gift shop. I'd love to actually hike it but I'm just not there long enough to get acclimatized to the altitude.
Dang! Is this your training for the Border Patrol Challenge! You win! I forfeit 😅😢😂 my elevation training is 811ft Rhode Island highest point! Okay okay I lied that’s too high for me maybe 400 ft for my elevation training 😅 is that Arcadia’s highest point?
Cracking climb Seth handled the altitude well as there was no chance of acclimatising before you set off 🙌🙌🏔️(would of been great to Bivvi around 7000 ) would of felt easier then but Great job mate 🏔️ Best regards Simon 🏔️🤠👍
Thanks Simon. I thought about trying to camp out but the amount of gear I would need to bring seemed overwhelming. Plus, I liked having a hotel as a base camp. Next time I will definitely acclimate more though!
