Join Sara and I for 3 days of Hiking & Hammock Camping on a Backpacking Trip in the Adirondack’s Dix Mountain Wilderness. GPS Data at www.sintax77.com
For this backpacking adventure, I’ll be breaking the hiking trip into two parts. Part 1 covers our hike in to camp, setting up our base camp with our two person hammock camping system, and some campfire chat while we make a campfire, do camp chores, check out the MalloMe camping cookset and cook some backpacking food.
Hiking the Dix Range Part 2 will be comprised of mostly hiking and summits, as we ascend from camp up onto the Dix Range to hit the Beckhorn (a subsidiary peak of Dix Mountain) and the summit of Dix Mountain itself.
For an easier read, check out my full blog post here: www.sintax77.com/hiking-the-di...
GPS Data for this trip will be released on the blog post with part 2 and on my Trip Data Page here: www.sintax77.com/trip-data/
Trailhead and Parking Location:
Elk Lake Trailhead Parking Lot, 675 Elk Lake Rd, North Hudson, NY 12855
44°01’15.0″N 73°49’40.9″W
Topics Discussed and Things that Happen in this Episode:
Base camping with a ton of camping gear vs ultralight backpacking.
Finding & legal camping spots in the Adirondacks.
Pros and cons of using a bear canister. These are not legally required in the Dix Mountain Wilderness, but we had one anyway, for reasons discussed in the video.
Hammock camping with our dog, Denali.
Outfitting our Dutchware Chameleon Hammocks with the Double Dutch Bugnet system.
Hammock under quilt attachment using of Chameleon hammock’s underquilt hooks.
A look at the MalloMe Camping Cookware Set for backpacking food preparation.
Building a campfire and cooking some of of favorite backpacking appetizers and dinners.
Sara reviews a flashlight…
Maps that I use for hiking and camping in the Adirondacks:
National Geographic Adirondack Park Map Pack Bundle amzn.to/2fOhly0
Trails Used Day 1:
Parked at Elk Lake Trailhead Parking Lot. This is a decent sized lot along a gravel road on the way to the Elk Lake Lodge. If the lot is full, you may park for free at the Elk Lake Lodge, a bit further up the road.
Elk Lake to Dix Mountain Trail
Pass the Slide Brook Lean-to . The Slide Brook LT and camping area makes for a popular base camp for hikers hitting the Dix Range. We chose to push on a bit (under 2 miles) to the lesser used Lillian Brook lean-to area, which as some nice, legal campsites that are a bit more secluded.
Pass the sign for Lillian Brook LT and continue a bit further.
Setup camp along the Elk Lake Trail, after the Lillian Brook LT and just before the large bridge crossing Lillian Brook. As of 9/14/17, this site had a yellow “Camp Here” disc, designating it a fully legal spot, despite it’s proximity to a small stream nearby. The stream is probably a convenient water source when flowing good, but we opted to get our water a 100 meters or so down the trail by the Lilian Brook bridge.
Day 1 Total Mileage: 4 miles
Day 1 Gross Elevation Gain: 633 feet
Day 1 Gross Elevation Loss: 339 feet

I know people watch these vids for different reasons, so check it out: Part 1 is for the Camp Chillers - camp setup, campfire chat, camp cooking and gear talk. Part 2 is for the Mileage Killers - trails, summits and views. Pick you poison or go for the double shot. Choice is yours ;)

I want to thank you sintax77 for all the great information you provided over the years that I have been following you. Your videos motivated me to start backpacking again after I had my hip replaced. That was was over 3 years ago. I'm 62 years old and your advice on ultra ligh backpacking equipment made it possible for me to get out there and enjoy the outdoors again. I live in upstate New York and the Adirondacks Mountains are my backyard. My sincere thanks for motivating me to get back out into great outdoors.

Hi Sintax77 love watching your videos, keep them coming. You are probably aware of this, the twist top bear canister isn't legal in the ADK high peaks area--DIX range is not included. Only the DEC black bear canister with the coin slot opener is allowed. The Bears have learned how to unscrew and pop of the top--yellow yellow Bear. She was the first and taught her cubs, yellow yellow was the identifying ear tags that she wore. She is no longer alive, but her cubs and others are. Be save out there. Enjoy.

You guys were in my neck of the woods!! Would have been cool to run into you. Unfortunately, a lot of trails and associated structures (bridges, stairs, boardwalks, lean tos) are in serious disrepair in NYS. A lot of the work is carried out by volunteers. I’ve stayed out of the High Peaks for years. They’re seriously overrun. But I suspect a fair amount of resources are used there while other parts are left on their own. The “camp here” disks are often too close to the fire pit for me. I worry about embers hitting the tarp. Sara was a riot as always! The olite was insane! And the hammock for Denali was neat. Looking forward to the next part!

FYI to folks catching this in 2020 or later. New regulations on bear canisters have come out in conjunction with a rezoning of the ADK High Peaks Wildernesses. Check the NYS DEC website for details. Also expect to see a ban on the clear blue canisters, as they are being regularly defeated now. www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7865.html

Nice video, but I think you have a responsibility to adjust your statement on the bear vault: they do NOT block out the smell. They're designed to protect its contents from a bear, but they are far from odor proof. That's just not what they're designed to do.

Tried the Pack it Gormet all american burger last over night and it was pretty good but a pain in the ass to make compared to other freeze-dried meals. I think I'll stick to mountain house if i'm going to go the dehydrated route.. or just bring some legit food to cook. It's not a bad option for some that want to work a little more to eat a freeze-dried though.

What fabric is the 2T in? Has Denalis nails done anything to the fabric? While I love my dog in the hammock I don't love the tough night sleep or the tick fears. Like the close up of those underquilt hooks 😉 love your videos! Sara interview by the shed soon?
@sintax77
@sintax77 6 лет назад
Now that you mention it, I'm not sure what fabric it is. I just checked Dutch's site but didn't see a mention of that either. It's some sort of medium to light weight silnylon though (based on weight rating is 225). I haven't had any wear and tear issues so far. Denali's nails aren't too sharp, due to lots of walking on pavement etc, so that probably helps.

I don't know how expensive those sealable cooking bags are that you add boiling water into for your oatmeal but you should try ZipLoc quart size freezer bags available in most food stores. They take boiling water just as easily. Add water, mix, then put into a cozy for a few minutes and you're done. Also, are you flying a drone during this trip?

We didn't actually do any backpacking on that trip. Actually, now that you mention it, it was pretty much a food trip, haha. We hit some cool restaurants & wineries, ate some great chili and queso, did some horseback riding, ...and ate some more chili and queso. We stayed in between Dallas and Ft Worth to make it easy to explore both, but in the future I would probably stay right in Ft Worth. It seemed more like my vibe. The free art museum in Dallas was awesome, though.

Where you able to jump back on the Keto train relatively easy? Any adverse effects from throwing the gluttony of carbs back into the diet? Been on the Keto since day after memorial day and have had great success with it.

+Jeff McElroy Yeah, I went right back too it without any real issues as soon as I got back home. Eating some of my fave backpacking foods was fun, but I generally feel much better without the carbs, so motivating myself to get back on it wasn't much of an issue.

Hi guys! We are looking to hike some spots in the ADKs in two weeks. How was the hike for Denali for this trip? We have a 7 month old pup that we will be bringing with us along with a 7 year old dog.

If you’re not looking to backpack over night, sleeping beauty is a good and easy day hike that would be good for the dogs... if you are going to be doing an overnight.. Newcomb Lake is a really nice hike with a couple lean-tos by the lake I think it’s only a few miles in if I remember correctly and that trail is pretty mellow for dogs too :)

What do you bring with you for protection from bears and other animals? I live in bear country and we have mountain lions and huge wolves (I'm near Yellowstone). I love hiking and would love more than anything to backpack, but I'm so worried about animals where I live that I'm genuinely afraid to be in the woods overnight. Do you have any advice?
