Glen Onoko was on my bucket list ever since I was a teenager but was afraid to do it on account of all the accidents and deaths. When I heard it was closing down it was my last chance and I knew if I didn't do it I would regret it so my daughter and I went on the day before it closed down. It started out not too bad, but then the trail went straight up over rocks. We had to bend over and crawl on our hands and feet. I was a nervous wreck till we made it to the top but was so glad to hear there was an easier trail to back down cause there was no way I was going to try and go down the way we went up! Now that I know what to expect I would love to go again and actually enjoy the trip up, but if I never do, I can at least say I did it once!!
Mr. Woodsman- we come here once a year (from md) and love it. We've found it's easier to go up the trail that is right next to the falls, and come down the easier section (opposite the way you went). Also if you go on a weekday morning there are few if any people there. :)
Hiked Tuscarora State Park yesterday, and went to see the Turn Hole Tunnel. The tunnel was neat, but the area is so full of people we decided to go home. Got to the tunnel around 2 pm. Tuscarora was empty and we had a great hike. We found the spirit tree while hiking on the Spirit of Tuscarora Trail. You were right! They blazes for the trails are confusing. Love your videos.
We hiked this last weekend. We went up the back way like you did. Glad we did as we had our baby in an Osprey Poco and two dogs in tow. We came back down the less steep way but were glad we had our boots / hiking poles. Thanks for showing the steeper trail and all we missed. So glad we didn't go that way!!
I'm glad you showed how dangerous this trail could be. We haven't hiked it yet, but we often see small children in the steeper parts of the Falls Trail at Ricketts and this looks even more dangerous. We love hikes like this and will try it soon, but def won't bring our kids.
I came looking for the history of the ruins u walked past. I thought u would've said something.. i was absolutely fascinated by the size of some rocks in the walls built. There are side walks and remnants of cobbled streets. Also a large well
Back in 1995 we climbed that thing by the side of the falls! Did you even see the tops where the ruins are? Didn't look like you saw much at all. I guess from all the injuries and deaths since we've climbed it the whole thing has changed big time! Wow! Nice pics though.
Great video! Did you have to do boulder climbing to reach the falls? Like the kind you need to do on the Hawk Mountain Skyline trail? Or was is mostly walking?
I was told the Cave Falls is still accessible from the top but I also heard the entire section of falls is now off-limits. Which version are you aware of? Either way, I'm glad you filmed this while the trail was open so I can see what it looks like now that I can't go.
This place is not anymore dangerous than anywhere else. People got hurt due to human error. This place should never be off limits to anyone. Let people go there if they want..... smh
I was just up there on 10/15/2019 and there were plenty of people hiking up the trail to the falls. Beautiful location, next time I'm doing the hike. I'm careful and have experience hiking so why should I be denied access because of somebody else's stupidity. They can "close" the trail all they want but people are still going to go up and see the waterfalls.
The people who died were high school age. They don’t want people who aren’t capable getting an idea for going into a very dangerous place. I’m friends with the family of one of the kids, it’s so sad and there is some sensibility in why they might want to discourage. If you heard the story of how these children died(going for a water bottle that fell off the edge, going for it slipping, and then killing your friend in the process who sticks their arm out to save your dumbass.
ya know for all the talk people in jim thorpe gave it when I visited, those falls were kind of underwhelming. I took a local Jim Thorpe girl on a bike ride down the Lehigh Gorge Trail which she had never gone down and she said she had never seen Lukes or Buttermilk falls and that Glen Onoko has nothing on them haha. It is pretty big though. I'm used to falls down near the Smokeys
I believe this is closed now. I went a couple years ago with my wife. There were some difficult parts going up. We made it all the way to the last waterfall.
The Fall Trail looks less challenging than any of the AT down in GA, NC or TN. Wonder why they want you to wear hiking boots. Seems a bit "old school".
People are stupid when it comes to their safety. Have you ever seen the old 1975 footage or a man who gets eaten by a lion on a safari because he had to get a closer picture of them eating a zebra carcass? The first five times it's shocking and you feel the finality of his death, but after awhile it's sort of amusing.
