In this video I walk the length of the Longdendale Trail in the Peak District National Park. It follows the line of the former Manchester to Sheffield railway, the Woodhead Line and runs a distance of approximately 6.5 miles (10.4km) from Hadfield, Derbyshire to the famous Woodhead Tunnels. The Woodhead Tunnels are three parallel trans-Pennine 3-mile (4.8 km) long railway tunnels on the Woodhead Line. The western portals of the tunnels are at Woodhead in Derbyshire and the eastern portals are at Dunford Bridge, near Penistone, South Yorkshire.

MARY…I want to let you know that I’ve been watching your PCT videos. I started at #1 and now up to #100!. What an adventure you had and I want to thank you on your recordings! I think it’s the best record for hiking the PCT. Your decision to tackle the HIGH SIERRA was quite brave! Even though you are done with the PCT, I was worried about you going alone at the beginning . When you teamed up later, I felt relieved. YOU ARE NOW AN EXPERT ON THE PCH! Love ya!

Hello again Mary Mansfield 👋 Well what can I say about your lastest video? It was WONDERFUL!!!!!! with a lovely host as usual 😃 Nice views, lovely countryside and a winter's walk are the best time to get yourself out and about. Woodhead Railway Tunnels are one of the places that I've always wanted to visit, as I've got a great interest in the history of that Railway line. If you ever visit Sheffield, where the railway started, there's still part of the railway there, and some of the rail track too, which is still used today by mainline locos up to the steel works. The Station at Sheffield was called Sheffield Victoria and the station hotel is still there today too, think it's a premier Inn or something like that now? I remember watching a Railway program a while ago, where the presenter called (Rob Bell) walked the whole route from Sheffield to Hadfield and was really interesting to watch. A good mate of mine tells me that he used to ride the trains along the Woodhead route to Manchester when he was younger, and used to go train spotting at Pennistone station to spot the old electric locos class 76 and 77 locos. Wish I'd of been around in those days too 😃 One day I'd really love to visit the Woodhead tunnels, but sadly due to me not having transport, I'm not able to get there, but have been told that I can get a bus from Sheffield, which will take me to the other side at Dunford Bridge, so at least I'll be able to visit at least one part of the Woodhead tunnels 😀 failing that, I'd have to get a train to Hadfield, and if I'm feeling brave? Lol walk it to the tunnels from there one day, it's just such a great shame that the people picked the Hope Valley Line instead of the Woodhead line. Keep up the good work Mary, as I really enjoyed watching every minute of the video, it truly was straight up my street 😃 thank you for doing a video which I have a great interest in too, it was fantastic!!!!!! 100 out of 100 Mary 😀😀 On another note, you mentioned that village on the route, about it being flooded to make a dam, it reminds me of the same thing that happened at Derwent, the same thing happened there too, and for some time, before they blew it up, people at one time used to be able to see the old church spire from the old village, sticking out of the water, just a bit like the old chimney that you mentioned. Yes once again, such a lovely video Mary. It was just a nice video to watch this evening after a really long walk myself and a good mate of mine did today. It was a walk around a place called Tapton House Park, which is just a ten minute walk from Chesterfield town centre and has a lovely views of the surrounding area and and even saw my house too from above lol 😆 Tapton House in Chesterfield, was once lived in by one of my heroes of Railway history, Mr George Stevenson, who lived there for a short while, when he was building the Midland Railway line through the area. Anyway, Tapton House Park, has some lovely garden's, plenty of places to sit down and have a spot of lunch like myself and my mate did today, it has a large golf course, a fishing pond, play area for the kids, a large wooded area walk too, and it's a great little place to explore and escape from the hussle and bussle of the town centre. And to forget everything that is going on in the world at the moment sadly. Well worth a visit, and explore. Anyway looking forward to your next upload on RU-vid. All the best Stay Safe and Keep Well. And almost forgot to say. HAPPY EASTER to you both 😊 From. Mike (Devon Boy)

Another really delightful video, with great scenery. These old railroad beds make great trails because of the reasonably flat grades. In the U.S., we have several of these, and there is a non-profit group, called the Rails to Trails Conservancy, that actively works to promote redevelopment of old rail lines into trails. Parts of this video also reminded me of the C&O Canal towpath trail, which runs along the Potomac River Valley in Maryland. It was a canal (no longer working and filled in along some places) that enabled shipping up through the Appalachian Mountains (the Potomac was not navigable above Washington DC due to water falls). Today you can hike or bicycle on it up to something like 200 miles from DC up into the mountains. A small section of it makes up part of the Appalachian Trail. I think it is great to give these old industrial routes new lives as ways for people to connect with nature.

A beautiful trail. The rail on the left side, at the beginning looked so classic. Those tunnels are kool. I wonder if the local Civil Defense people have considered them for shelters? Many of our old rail beds were converted to trails in the 1990s but there is always the possibility of bringing back light rail. I was inspecting a culvert about 20 years ago when a huge crayfish, about 8" long, came out. It turned out that they were common on that stream. Thanks for taking us along. BTW in CT we say: "if you don't like the weather, wait a minute, it will change". This afternoon, we are having wind, snow flurries, and then sun, then it repeats. Good Luck, Rick

Mary... I have a suggestion for your HIGH SIERRA VIDEOS.....Remove your music while hiking. It takes away from the challenge through the Sierra's!
@MarysOutdoorAdventures
@MarysOutdoorAdventures 3 года назад
It's not as easy as it sounds unfortunately. Not only do I not have all the footage, but to delete them all off RU-vid and redo them is an awful lot of work - plus everything would be out of sync and all the comments/replies/views etc would be lost. Sorry you felt the music took away from the challenge though - a lot of the time I added music so viewers didn't have to put up with wind noise from the microphones.
