Everything you need to know about the lottery and Hiking to the wave. What to expect when you enter the lottery and how the in person lottery in Kanab, Utah works.
In total only about 7,300 people per year are allowed to hike to The Wave in the Coyote Buttes. Half of those come from winning the in person lottery held in Kanab, Utah which is what we did. The in person lottery is held Monday - Friday in the Kanab Center in downtown Kanab. The doors will open promptly at 8:30 a.m. and you will go inside and fill out the 1 page application.
This application will ask how many people are in your party and ask you to provide the names of those people. There is space for you to enter six names on the form. The form will also ask if you are bringing a dog along with you. Once you have completed the form you will turn it in and they will assign you a number which is written on your form. The Number on your form also has a corresponding Bingo Ball which will be placed into a Bingo Ball Basket to be chosen.
As they begin to choose bingo balls they will only choose as many bingo balls as are associated with a total of 10 people. If the first ball chosen has an application with 6 people on it then there will only be 4 slots (People) remaining to be chosen.
There is a fee of $7 per person and per pet on the application if your number is chosen. There is no fee to simply enter the lottery. Also, it is important to bring exact cash or a check to pay if you are chosen. They will not accept Credit Cards or bills larger than a $20 bill. You must pay after all the winners have been selected.
After all of the winners have been selected, they will issue a pamphlet containing photographs and descriptions associated with those to guide you to The Wave. They will also issue the permit and a parking pass which must be left with your vehicle in the parking lot. The Permit must be attached to your backpack clearly and openly displayed for park services to see.
Hiking to the wave without a permit carries a $10,000.00 fine so I would highly recommend against it. I saw at least one trail camera while hiking in the area so they are watching. Also, you always see them in the Wire Pass parking lot and out on the trails. It is not worth risking it.
Hiking with dogs to the wave is permitted as long as they were listed on your application and you paid the $7.00 fee. We were happy to pay the fee so we could bring Skye along for the hike. She loves getting out on the trails.

I would assume there's directions that you must display your permit, visibly at all times? Asking because I see way more videos of people at the wave with packs, etc and there's no permit and it just looks like "most" people are poaching the place?

You guys are so cute and funny, We got our Wave lottery for Feb 18th after a few tries. We'll fly out of NY tomorrow and spend a few days in UT and AZ. I'm excited to add another great destination video to my channel just like yours. Thank you!

@@RoamingwiththeRamsays The weather was 10F when we started before dawn and went up to only 32F during our entire hike, I managed to get a few drone shots but not much due to hands freezing every time i took off my gloves. We did make it to the Wave and 2nd wave but then the wind picked up further and we decided not to continue to the Alcove and Melody arch. nevertheless, another box checked :) although I rank this hike to be the most brutal of all so far

Just WOW. Long version a bit better than the short one. The walk-in reminds me of walking into Petra. I would suggest AZ but it cold there also. But if you are feeling very adventurous try Baja. Love your channel cant wait to see where we end up next. Thanks for sharing.

looks like so much fun! The hike I have enjoyed the most was the Windows trail in Big Ben National park in texas. Bring a lunch and enjoy the view once you get to the end. Bring something to feed the friendly mexican bluebirds along the way

Awesome you guys got a permit. We have never had luck. White Pockets is amazing as well, no permit required but you need a 4x4. I would suggest Nevada or Arizona. Tons to do and see!

Karen, thanks for the recommendation. Both Arizona and Nevada are on our list. We are actually going to try for another permit for Christmas day since our daughter will be visiting from Alaska. Glad you enjoyed the video....

Very beautiful place! Why do they have the restrictions on the amount of people who can go? Danny and I love to hike. And go anywhere south. Lol. Lynn and Danny

Is the trail well marked and easy to follow?
@RoamingwiththeRamsays

It is not. They give you directions that have photos of mountains to walk towards and guidance. It was easy to follow though.

Glacier National Park...Montana. QQQ- What month did you visit The Wave? Did it seem dangerous to you both? Folks have died there- younger people. Maybe it was in the hot summer months. How many miles do you both walk daily? My husband and I walk two - four miles daily. No markers. No footprints. OMG. 😩😩😩Not for me!! Beautiful but dangerous. 🙏
@RoamingwiththeRamsays
@RoamingwiththeRamsays 3 года назад
It was not as hard a hike as you would think. Didn't feel very dangerous and we did have cell coverage for a large portion of the hike. We walk about 6 miles a day. We hiked the Wave in November. We did spend all of last summer from late April until the end of September Exploring Glacier National Park. We have been having a blast. Gordon & Alice
