Hiking up to Flat Top Mountain on the Benton MacKaye!

I headed out to the north end of the Cohutta Wilderness because I wanted to check out some camping opportunities. While there I took a short hike up to Flat Top Mountain via the Benton MacKaye Trail. I hiked a short ways on the road leaving the Dyer Mountain Cemetery and then picked up the BMT. Flat Top isn't a far hike but it has some history in the form of an old homesite foundation from the 1800's!

Got the chills seeing all the ice cycles on the rocks, remembering near 32F mornings mountain biking up there with the Walkers. Enjoyed your hike share. Thanks

My old stomping grounds when I was in high school 1973-1975 in Ellijay. What a frustrating place to live if you enjoy snow. We had one decent snowfall in those three years. Generally just a dusting a couple of times per winter, as on your hike here. At least it was a great place to live to learn how to backpack. The Cohutta Wilderness designation was new, and the AT was nearby.

nice hike, investigating animal tracks is fun, even the drive down out with the ice water on the rock edges was beautiful, thanks for sharing the trip, liked and sub👍to see more of your tours :)
