I have bought 7 of the 4/8ah multi volt batteries since November 2022 and 2 have gone bad. Metabo hpt America is 10 miles from my house. They sent me me replacement batteries in both cases with just a phone call. An apology and a new contractors bag ,charger and an extra battery were sent for my trouble. Great customer service but I would rather have shit that doesn't fail after a couple of months. I own a large Makita selection in 18volt and dropped them when they went to the single battery platform without a way to use their new 36volt(40 volt as they call it) on my 18 volt tools. I also own some Bosch 18 volt drills and impactors that are over 10 years old and not one battery out of 6 has failed. They have grown weaker but not failed.I have never had a Makita battery failure. I just bought the 18 volt Bosch 10 inch miter saw and their 1330 hammer drill. Very nice tools. I purchased 4 8ah profactor batteries and 2 Helion chargers. We will see

I was literally looking at the Bosch tools this week they are nice and solid tools and extremely cheap compared to the more used brands, I think it is purely the fact people want to be associated with brand names why they are not used more, seems Hikoki hpt have battery issues, hopefully it’s old stock they are clearing and new have rectified the faults ✌🏻 thanks for commenting let’s hope no more go bad on you or they will be replacing windows from flying battery’s 😂

Bosch & Makita battery experience is on another level across all. I've had similar %s with HPT/Hikoki. Local HPT service usually great! 👍

As of October 2022 I'm seeing a lot of these batteries failing under warranty for the two flashing lights. I'm currently having to recycle at least 2-3 of the 5ah Multivolt batteries every week in my shop. These really are crap products. I've taken apart several and all the cells check out good so it has to be the PCBs that are failing. Ive taken a pcb out of one and removed all the potting gunk and can't see anything obvious or any smt fuses. I repair power tools for a living and in my opinion I think Hikoki have gone down the same road as Makita where their 18v batteries lock out after 2 or 3 faults / critical tool overloads. In the case of Makita batteries that are locked and if the cells measure ok the only way to bring one back into service is to replace the PCB! They're are exceptions depending on the ah size of battery as some do have overload fuses on the boards. Depending on the model some are on top of the pcb and others are underneath which is a pain. I hope someone finds a fix for this Hikoki fault as I've got boxes of the damn things! Your can buy a replacement PCB on aliexpress but they're expensive NZ$30 when compared to a dewalt or makita board which are less than NZ$5.
@ProBuildCarpenter
@ProBuildCarpenter Год назад
Wow that’s disturbing, I wonder if they recycle faulty ones that have been returned and change the boards ? Touch wood I only have the one battery that went bad, I had multiple dewalt fail at once which led me to switch to hikoki, bonus of the 5 year warranty I have never had a battery last that long of any make so if they go bad you get a new one. Do you repair for the hikoki warranty or stand alone tool repairs ? Be interesting to see how hikoki are with repair centres, do they just say repair or do they scrutinise faults before repair Thanks for sharing 👍🏻

@@matthewmillard688 Hello! Did you find out how to repair those batteries? I've got 4 with this issue... I know scratching that black silicone is worst part of the job but have to get 'em fixed :)
@matthewmillard688
@matthewmillard688 Год назад
Hello Kamil. No I did t find a faulty part. I think the cpu detects an overload and then locks the battery. It’s a firmware issue. I have successfully replaced some of the boards with aftermarket ones from aliexpress and they now work ok. If you find another way of fixing them will you please post the solution on here.

Saw this failure for the 2nd time yesterday. Battery is 2020 date stamped & have had it just under 12 months. Feedback I got on the first on was that the LEDs are indicating a faulty BMS. The First one I saw failed was replaced in around a week.

I have the Hikoki 18v Framing Nailer, brilliant gun, better by miles than the DeWalt and for Roofing better than a Paslode. I have had to replace the 40amp fuse inside and the regular batteries are far better than the multivolt. The multivolt stop working in the nail gun when the battery shows 2 bars, and one of them has just come up with the fault like yours, about 12 months in. The original standard batteries are near 3 years old and still work. If DeWalt made a nail gun like the Hikoki or Milwaukie id switch in a second.

The same issue happened with me last night. The battery is not even a year old. Now that I’m thinking about it, the battery Matabo fast charger failed as well. Glad I bought it from Lowe’s because it was a easy swap( warranty out in >90days) I own makita batteries and those suckers last. I’m glad i am not so invested in Matabo brand. Hopefully you don’t have anymore issues with the Matabo batteries.

I have been with hikoki for a few years now no other battery’s have failed 🤞🏻metabo use a different type of battery they use the CAS alliance battery’s that can interchange with a few brands, I have cas battery’s with my Mafell plunge saw those battery’s are solid they feel like tanks and are funnily enough called power tanks, glad you got sorted hopefully no more issues, nothing worse than losing a $180 battery 😅

As an ex electronics tech the fault in the board maybe a dry solder joint problem, many circuits usually have this, if you can get the gunk off it and use a reflow center unit (basically like a hot air gun specifically made for circuits) using a liquid flux you may get them going again, I've done this on another brand and it works, please note, you will have to wait until the whole PCB is cold. I'm going to give it a try soonish.

Before everyone who has this problem with their battery goes on a hopeless mission and sees themselves as a battery doctor. First blow clean all the contacts and ventilation ports of the battery with compressed air and then try to charge the battery again... I recently found out that similar charging problems with Makita can be solved this way. Unfortunately, I am one of those IDIOTS who tried to repair my Hikoki bsl36a18 battery myself a year ago. I got rid of the battery and I've replaced the window which the battery was thrown trough after two evenings of stress and frustration...🤯🤬🤯

Update: I got a response from Hikoki, The 2 outer LED's flashing rapidly approx 12 times in 4 sec, indicates a dead board or BMU. I used this pack to repair another pack where one of the cells had died. During this, i did note the pack with the dead cell, previously reported a charged state but would only run the tool for a few seconds before reporting flat. While i had the faulty battery removed, pressing the test button would cause the 2 outer LED's to blink in a similar way as the first pack. Hopefully this helps anyone stumbling in here troubleshoot their 'out of warranty' battery. And facilitate a repair. BTW, the Australian 2019 and 2020 hikoki 5Ah/2.5Ah 18v/36v batterys use 10 Samsung INR18650-25s 2500mAh cells, in a 5x2, individually balanced and the BMU can re-config to 10x1 for 36v tools. The BMU are potted front and back in whats seems like a silicone or urethane, which is good for reliability but makes it uneconomical to attempt to repair the board, due to the difficulty in removing the potting. So if the cell are balanced and appear fine, just salvage the battery cells and bin the board.

I have had two of my large hikoki multivolt batteries do this in the past 6 months. Which sucks! Because they are the expensive ones to replace! Apparently they are out of warranty after 2.5 years and no1 want to know about it! It really pisses me off because i buy this gear because i want some heavy duty tools that work when i need them and they have been bloody good! I have lost a bit of faith in the company tho when they dont even wanna look at them after x date. Seem like they got my money and now dont care.

I have the same issue with the American variant of this battery (Metabo HPT) but I didn’t register the battery itself with the charger. (At least I believe I didn’t) But I do have the receipt, will they still honor the warranty? Or am I out of luck on this?

I’d send them an email, if you have the receipt it is worth a try, they are not as big as dewalt or Milwaukee and I’d drop a few words in like you have been promoting to your friends to buy and making RU-vid videos then the battery died, they were really good with me and said it is a fault so they should honour the warranty but if you didn’t register there’s a chance they won’t and by throwing in the RU-vid it might be better advertising to replace 😂 but get the next ones registered ✌🏻 let us know how you get on, I got a bigger battery back because they didn’t have the 5ah in stock so win win, good lock and thanks for watching ✌🏻
