I actually wonder if Dolly was caught off guard by the Trump reference. If you watch her face during that part she looks surprised then quickly attempts to mask her reactions and look natural. But her eyes tell a different story...when she attempts to cover it by referring to Dabney Coleman, the joke didn't really land and makes me think it was not part of the script. Jane Fonda putting a hand on her shoulder after the Trump bit reads to me like Fonda realizing that Dolly is uncomfortable, and trying to support her subtly. Of course if she was caught off guard by this we will likely never know, because Dolly isn't going to talk about it or throw the other women under the bus. She's just not that type of person.

These women have what? 6 decades each of show biz experiences: receiving notes, directions, writing, memorizing, etc. They may be 'of a certain age' but their minds are razor sharp & computer fast. Since someone pointed out that Dolly claimed in an interview to be taken by surprise here by her two co-stars, it's no surprise that while they expressed their thinly disguised political views (and not caring if Dolly minded), Dolly was quiet and in her head writing out her response which she had no trouble firing back before proceeding with the nominations, but in her classier retort - she buttoned it up with a nod to their hit show causing the subject to shift from politics back to the nature of the telecast and both genuinely laughed. Supreme ladies this trio!
