Dolly Parton’s wit, grace, and patience always shines through. Walters is patronising at times, but Dolly stays so dignified the whole way through this interview. #dolly #dollyparton #barbarawalters

I rather real interviews like this where we get to know the person than the fluff, “nicey” stuff now. Just because someone asks you a question doesn’t mean you have to answer. Now it’s, “Tell me the story when you almost burned rice trying to cook,” “How was working with this director?” And we get phony replies.
@@januarysson5633 it's like she actually couldn't stop herself. Surely she could have gone off script and asked some normal questions rather than double down on this idiocy
ESPECIALLY when she already said she’s beautiful AND for some reason doesn’t understand she’s talking to an accomplished star ⭐️ at this point 🤔 Barbara has always been an idiot like this, and was only good for gotcha journalism and the fact she was allowed to keep it up for like 967 years is a testament to how well the machine works and churns and how ignorant and dumb af we are as people
- “I’m not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes, because I know I’m not dumb… and I’m not blonde either.” - “It costs a lot of money to look this cheap”. If she hadn’t been a singer, she’d have made a fine stand-up comedian. Love Dolly.
She was someone that a lot of people made fun of, including my age group, and I think it stemmed from disrespect for her being a successful woman. I’m so glad that she never let it get her down. She’s an icon.
@@lcam9241A lot of successful women in show biz were disrespected and turned into the butt of jokes in the 70’s - Dolly Parton, Cher, Betty White, Donna Summer, Farrah Faucet. They were all brilliant artists and they got so much disrespect! It’s what happened to successful women back then. I’m thankful to each one of them, and countless others, for paving the way for the younger generations.
@@jaislim5717 By the standards of the time, Dolly did look ridiculous. At the time, people reacted to her like how people reacted to Lady Gaga when she first came onto the scene. Dolly's very pretty, don't get me wrong, but you can't change the fact that that's what people thought about her. When considering an event set in a past time period, you have to analyse things from how they were. Viewing things with a modern lens will cause incorrect interpretation
Dolly has no class… that is the fakest human on this planet, and not one person can name a song other than Jolene, or name one good thing she has done for humanity with all her money…
THIS is what turning the other cheek means. She isn't being passive, she is retaining a frame of decency and composure...and then watches as the other woman trying to bait her ends up being the one who looks like an ass.

@@NikiMcNally that was the world then, but just as they could ask anything, she could say anything back and she did. We've lost that freedom as people evidently.
But to be fair, she worked inside such a misogynist landscape... As Dolly said, she is very sure about who she is. When you don't have that, it is incredibly hard to be a nice female reporter/journalist when you have all the misogyny around you.
@@ThatWeirdFinn Right. I just wish women could at least trust one another to support women instead of throwing them under the bus to gain men’s respect. I also just in general think if we stopped putting celebs on pedestals we wouldn’t get jealous and search for reasons to knock them down.
Right? Who would begin a conversation with that and not hear themselves as utter upper class scum? Shameful behaviour for anyone but probably not shameful for an elitist puke.
I've noticed that a lot of interviews back in the day, especially when led by women, were pretty vile. It's like the female interviewer tries so hard to distance herself from the interviewee in a hateful way. Look at some old Britney Spears interviews. I'm glad that the world has changed a little in the way women now support each other.
@@Footswalker1977 Unless you are watching the View. I haven't watched it much but what I have seen, led me to the conclusion that Barbara Walters just doesn't have the intellect to interview most of her guests. She can't compete intellectually so she tries to demean people and expose their worst traits. Absolutely horrible person and interviewer. Gilda Radner's Baba Wawa character was far more intelligent than Walters is and ever will be.
But this is what many city people, especially those from the Northeast, think of people who live in rural areas. I've lived in big cities and the middle of nowhere and I'll take country people over city people every day and twice on Sunday.
Interviews should push limits. If they don't at least probe for some sort of interesting thing or bit of insight, why would you bother watching it? That said, the interview was very much patronizing and the interviewer clearly doesn't respect Dolly at all when this interview takes place and that's seen clearly in the questions. Would I change it? Nope. Because the interviewer reflected the criticisms of a wide swath of "society" types in 1977 who all thought they were better than her. It's no different than today listening to the coastal, self-appointed "elites" talking about fly-over country. It's just as derisive, arrogant, and dismissive. Those of us subject to that socially-acceptable scorn should be able to defend ourselves and respond to the critics. Dolly did that with class. She always has been a very genuine, loving woman and an admirable human being.
@@kma3647 As an Oregonian who grew up in Tennessee, I completely agree with you in all regards. It's really sad how lacking in empathy a lot of people are. I've experienced a lot less bigotry here, but at the same time, I feel there's a lot less love for one's neighbors here, too.
@@queenbutterfly4888 you do realise Dolly Parton is a leftist right? She's openly vocal about her support for LGBT individuals and actively funded Covid-19 vaccines. Her Netflix special is pretty much the queer coded version of It's A Wonderful Life. She's also very openly supportive of transgender rights and anti discrimination. She's center left for sure but she's still a more leftist than Biden.
I grew up in the same area Dolly did She is entirely a product of her upbringing and dead on the money for the type of people we are. in large part we are Appalachian. We are a simultaneously proud but humble people, kind as you will ever see but wary, and stubborn as we are determined. Very rich tradition and culture that is distinct from the bulk of American culture.
Sure, she should call her “yo bi…ch” instead. It’s gross how people with hearing problems get offended over stuff they misheard. She called he “Dolly” Darling is patronising only if you are so insecure to let yourself be patronised. Otherwise is a bit silly but cute.

@@fruitellabong unless you're a performance artist (with the exception of plastic surgery) yes. yes and yes. That's obviously exactly what it is. The hair one doesn't make sense and is kinda ridiculous but to the other points, yes. All those things you mentioned imply insecurity, no doubt.
@@eEmm1 Plastic surgery has never once been all around encouraged by society. EVERYONE knows that if you get plastic surgery, you will be judged for it. I'd love if you could tell me how she did because she was insecure in herself.
It was ridiculous at the time for the genre. It's like looking at a Rodney Dangerfield stand up routine and saying "I don't see what was so groundbreaking". Yeah, because you've seen all the people he's influenced, so his innovation is now foundation. The same can be said of Dolly.
Barbara Walters is so patronising and doesn't listen to the people she's interviewing. She's actually quite crass in this. Dolly on the other hand is a masterclass of grace and authenticity.
Barbara is just asking what a lot of people are thinking. I don't find interviewers who keep asking the same safe questions to be interesting. With that said, I admire Dolly and people who intelligently and patiently respond to questions without being defensive or maintain their professionalism with tough questions. This applies to both entertainers and people in politics.
"I would never stoop so low to be fashionable. That's the easiest thing in the world to do." Dolly Parton Dolly Parton has more grace in her little finger than Baba Walters has shown in her entire life.
Amen!! At the end it's like I feel bad for Barbara because she had an agenda and Dolly basically looked down winked at her and pinched her cheek. Dolly didn't need to say anything but everything she said here was so ABOVE any kind of fuse Barbara was trying to light. Almost as if to say look at how cute you are trying to get me to say something inappropriate. The boob questions, were just plain rude! Finally Dolly addressed it with "my figure" which was so amazingly classy. That was what has always blown me away about Dolly Parton. She was always soooo classy as to never invite any rude questions and has always been absolutely gorgeous and adorably cute. Then you hear her sing and my god it's like what I'd imagine angels sing like. And she can talk into singing better than anyone I've ever heard.
BABA WAWA does not know anything about music, and she does not care about music, and she certainly does not know anything about country & western music. The only interview that I've seen that is worse than BABA WAWA's interview of Dolly Parton, is when David Letterman interviewed Grace Slick (of Jefferson Airplane). In this interview, David Letterman trashes Grace Slick, and he puts her down, and he trashes her again. How sad.
Yep , there will never be another Dolly , she knew how to handle the phonies and she knew the entire industry was phony , and so (as she said) she loves a good joke , and that's how she played all those stuffy elitists like a fiddle and made a fortune doing it , and she was extremely talented in music and business
Barbara is such an elitist, she probably didn't even realize just how nasty and rude her questions were. Dolly was incredibly kind and gracious...SHE is a true lady.
This interview has aged well, Dolly looks great and sounds great! And Barb Walt. speaks of marraige and love as confining, true love sets us free! 👏🏼❤️
I hope at that time, the public went away knowing what kind of person Dolly is. Because they sure went away knowing what kind of person Barbara was. And just _maybe,_ Barbara went away knowing what kind of person Barbara was as well.
Dolly Parton is a world class sweetheart. She seems like a person who can talk to anyone and brighten their day. She truly exemplifies the best in southern charm. Never seen anyone as poised as she is. Dolly is a star forever.

This woman is a national treasure and should be honored! I don't particular care for Country Music but NOBODY can question that talent and artistry of this amazing person. Long live the Queen of Country Music!
She’s turning everything into positivity and empowerment. Barbara is completely disarmed by this approach. Dolly is strong and secure. She’s always radiated that feminine power!

This is what slow to anger and abounding in love looks like. Not quickly offended, extending grace, being wise and honest but not allowing herself to be walked over. This is actual class.
Slow to anger and not sticking up for yourself is 2 different things, this interviewer was out to lunch and seems that she didn’t like her from the start
I never realized how rude Barbara Walters was until I saw this interview. Rude and disrespectful. Dolly was a gem and she handled herself like the star she is. 💕
@SonShine Oh, come on. She and all of her legacy from The View is so embarrassing. She was always trying to be holier than thou. Look at them interviewing Norm Macdonald and trying to make fun of him just as she tried with Dolly. She was always the same.
Barbara has always been that wonderful word Aussies sometimes use instead of mate. Why do you think people made fun of the way she talked? Because it's manufactured glib to imply someone high on a hierarchy, and people knew it.
Oh, man... I was thinking just that very same thing. Seemed like Walters tried her level best to embarrass Dolly. From how she worded the questions about where she comes from, to where she is now, & her appearance (of all things) thru it all. Topping the rest of it off w/... are your tits real? Walters might have spoken softly, but that sure didn't remove a nary bit of venom from her words. Would she have asked George Jones stupid ass questions like those? I highly doubt it. & yes... it smacks of jealousy. (& honestly, Barbara Walters SHOULD BE jealous of Dolly. She has everything Barbara has plus integrity, compassion, wisdom & beauty just to name a few.)
@Alan I disagree. I feel Walters by this time was known for hard-hitting interviews and making headlines by asking probing questions. But her style makes no sense with someone who is not really controversial or deceptive. It's obvious that Dolly Parton is so self-assured. It's matter of taste whether you like her flamboyant style. So, I think Walters almost seems desperate to get a reaction or unsettle this grounded person.
3:25 "The man gives me freedom." "The why get married?" What a damming indictment of Walter's perspective of marriage. No wonder she went through four separations while Dolly & Carl are still going strong six decades later.
Barbara isn't necessarily a nasty troll. People can be indoctrinated. A woman can fall victim to sexism -- even if it's against their own interest. Probably because it's been rampant in her own life. Can you imagine someone interviewing a man like this? Not now, and not then. ...Luckily, this type of mentality seems to be fading away. Albeit, with setbacks and slowly.

If Anything at All is ever really mentioned about it.
My friends, we just witnessed a master class in how a classy southern lady can disarm even the most vile passive-aggressive attacks. Dolly is a national treasure.
A modern woman would've just gotten really passive aggressive or screamed or something. This interview is a perfect example of a woman who knows who she is, and is classy. Throwing temper tantrums doesn't make you "strong:
@Get 2 That is just not true. It's what you want to be true. It also lacks the grace Dolly herself is being praised for. Btw, it came out some people thought Betty White was mean. So how about we stop this thing women get saddled with, that we are either impossibly perfect saints or downright evil witches. Nothing (normal human) in between.
From Kenya when I was 17 in 1995 she still delighted me. Until this day American COUNTRY MUSIC MAGIC is Queen Dolly and Kenny and everyone in between. Culturally, it is just us enjoying pure magic
There was a line she had in Steel Magnolias and it sounds so Dolly, l wouldn't be surprised if she said it and it was written into the film: "The nicest thing l can say about her is all her tattoos are spelled right".
She said, "It costs a lot of money to look that cheap!" And she was trash talking Janice VanMeter at Shelby's wedding. She wasn't referring to herself.
Dolly is a National treasure. She has always carried herself like a lady. And she pulled off the Dallas cowboy cheerleader performance like a true entertainer. She is the best 👌. God Bless
Barbara just really tries so hard to get under her skin, but Dolly just brushes it off like a bug and keeps explaining how happy she is with her life and herself. True Queen❤
I agree, although I don't think the questions were condescending; Walters asked the questions that people wanted to know about, and Parton, who knew people wanted to know, answered with grace and honesty.
I’ve seen people be rude to her, but this is the worst! She’s a treasure. She has stood the test of time, remained humble, generous, inspirational, and beautiful!
And not to mention that absolutely adorable accent. It just sounds so charming and endearing to me, I found myself being in a complete awe and smiling while listening to her talk! Is that American southern accent by any chance?
I agree - southern accents are charming. Dolly’s accent differs from Southerners living in other parts of the southern US. For example, the southern accent my family from Georgia has is different from from hers in some noticeable ways if one listens. Texan accents sound different than those in Florida, and Tennessee has yet another variation on the accent. It’s fun to learn about these differences by talking to Southerners from different parts of the South.
I absolutely love and respect Dolly! Such a beautifl, poised and elegant lady! She's an absolute blessing to us and has the voice of an angel! Love you Dolly!❤❤❤
@@mylesthompson4485 ya and she just spent 4 minutes asking insulting question after insulting question. Famous interviewer or not that was an incredibly sexist and rude interview. “You don’t have to look like this” “I would never stoop so low as to be fashionable” I love her so much!!!!! She makes Barbara look like a total troll and I’m here for it!

She’s all of those things AND she doesn’t let people walk all over her. That balancing of kindness and strength, humility and confidence, is everything. She shows us how to be soft and sweet while not giving an inch on your boundaries.
Dolly is so in control of this interview. She never loses eye contact with Walters. Her smile is constant and her body language is a force. She moves forward when making her points. I love how Dolly takes her time to answer these ridiculous questions (that seem more like attacks). She repeats what Walters says back slowly to let her know “I heard you. I’m not an idiot .” And then Dolly answers with wisdom, intelligence, sincerity, and the perfect amount and use of humor. Walters looks like she’s holding on and trying to blast through the interview while Dolly is just relaxed and presenting calm and her beautiful self ... inside and out. Love you, Dolly. ❤️
Why do you think they are in opposition? Barbara is asking her questions to get an answer, and Dolly is giving it to her. They're having a fine conversation. I think people see regular conversations nowadays as arguments because, well... nowadays, in media, they often are.
She’s a real southern belle. Women in the south are like that. But honestly I don’t think dolly aimed to shut her down. She aimed to be real. She knew what Barbara was gonna come with and she knows she didn’t have to answer to Barbara. That’s why she gave answers that were not pr but rather conversational. It’s a gift lol. She doesn’t get flustered or upset she shows no weakness intimidation but remains warm and welcoming. Again it a gift. True def of knowing yourself.
Why do people think she’s being rude? She’s just doing her job I swear you people are just weak. If you were a world famous celebrity l expect direct questions about yourself.

I will remember these gracious responses forever and know, once again, the beauty of God's plans. I was sincerely ....gave me a bad taste in my mouth...for Barbara Walters to have stopped so low as to ask such ignorant questions when she had been the tree and the public had been the axe 🪓 that chipped, games, sliced, chopped away at her in a bad-joke manner for many years. She surely had to tuck some of Dolly's wisdom and intelligence into her pocket and carried it with her for her own rainy days. Ms. Walters disappointed me greatly here. Some jealousy maybe? Because she certainly couldn't touch, with a very very very long pole, Dolly's talent - or grace. Do you know how few people are recognized by their first names only? They couldn't have paid me enough money to be this rude and thoughtless.
