for the rain one, it was the bottom of the 5th inning, and if a regular season game goes at least 5 innings before a weather cancellation it counts as a full game
It was a long standing joke for players to try and touch Adrian Beltre's head, because he'd always flip out about it lol...Elvis Andrus, the guy who gave him the robe, was the main culprit, and was constantly messing with him throughout their time on the Rangers...was so fun watching them play together 😂
Yes his name is Prince Fielder. He was a power hitter just like his dad, Cecil. They actually finished their pro careers with the same number of home runs - 319.
I was surprised by the total too. They both likely have a high average distance on their home runs. I remember a clip from a season that Cecil had 52 home runs. He got an outside pitch just above his foot and golfed it out into the bleachers for a home run. So strong.
21:00 This is the annual Little League Clasic game played in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, which hosts the little league world series every year. It's not a normal major league stadium; it counts as a home game in this case for the Pittsburgh, PA Pirates, who are the closest MLB team to Williamsport (citation needed, the Phillies might be closer, I'm not sure where in PA Williamsport actually is.) i think they give free tickets to all the little leaguers in the tournament. It does count as a regular season game; in a 162-game season one game being in a slightly unusual park isn't that big a deal.
21:15..... That is at the Little League Classic at Bowman Field in Williamsport, PA. It opened in 1926. It's the 2nd oldest ballpark in minor league baseball. It was renovated in 2016 for the upcoming Little League Classic. The team that plays there, Williamsport Crosscutters, is an MLB-affiliated independent league that brings college players to get recognized by MLB teams in a future draft. The league is called "MLB Draft League". The Little League Classic is a game where 2 MLB teams play at Bowman Field for 1 game. The Little League World Series tournament is going on simultaneously. Hopefully that help!
At 11:03, the batter bunted the ball with 2 strikes against him. This is rarely done because a foul bunt results in a strikeout. The first baseman did not need to catch the ball. By doing so, he got credit for the out instead of the pitcher. At 15:42, when the pitcher Scherzer celebrated as if it was the 9th inning, not the 8th, the TV broadcasters mentioned a "kangaroo court." The players use it to mildly and possibly humorously punish one another for harmless mental lapses like this.
12:38 adrian beltre doesnt like having his head touched.. so elvis andrus always found a way to touch his head. There are several videos on it.. its hilarity
12:35 the camera missed Andrus coming back and rubbing Beltre's head. When he played, touching him on the head was a pet peeve of his. And Elvis Andrus kept doing it anyway.
The rain one, if a game stops before 5 innings they have to play it over again from the start, so they're trying to get 5 innings in so that either it will be ended with a result or, if tied, resumed from where it left off. Also you heard them mention the tarp coming out "again" so I suspect the fans left at the first rain delay.
Baseball doesn’t exist the little league scandal and the recent one about the playoffs not making sense is really good!! Hope you guys are doing great!!
Re. the last clip, Prince Fielder is great. He's a big guy but doesn't mind joking about it; once, after attempting to catch a foul ball that went into the stands, he swiped and ate a nacho from a front row fan.
At 6:55, Rays first base coach Ozzie Timmons told the team he would do 10 pushups for every run they scored in an effort to get them out of a slump. He ended up doing it for a few weeks before the team eventually turned things around
16:14 Max Scherzer, fun fact the Nationals had a advertising campaign centered around Max and his Heterochromia (his eyes are two different colors, one hazel and one blue) in the ad his eyes where Red and Blue with the Nationals W in the center of his eyes.
18:50 The vertical part of the strike zone is based on where the batter's knees and chest are in their stance, so by folding up like that, the strike zone is only a few inches tall 😂
Playing baseball in the rain in one of my most favorite memories pitching... catcher ump having to whip the ball off every other pitch... it's amazing... it may be just me.. but it's a cool experience
7:35 this was during a time when theRays where in a massive slump,to try to break the slump first base coach Ozzie Timmons bet the team, he would do 10 push-ups for each run scored.
The bubble gum on the hat is a classic dugout prank. Another big one is a “hot foot” in which a small bundle of matches is stuck to the back of someone’s shoe with chewing gum and lit on fire.
6:56 Ozzie Timmonds was the best from his time with the rays. He made a bet at some point where he’d do 10 pushups for every run the Rays scored that season. missing him a lot in Tampa Bay
6:00 I’m just guessing that Sanchez knew when the rain delay started that he was going to be changing uniforms anyway because he was already wet, so he might as well get his money’s worth. I imagine it’s pretty common for a player with a wet uniform to change during a rain delay.
the Litttle League Classic is played around the time of the little league world series that takes place in Williamsport, pennsylvania. the game usually features either the pirates or the phillies. the field the mlb uses was callled Bowman field. it is one of the oldest stadiums in the country. it is now called Journey bank ballpark. it is home to the Williamsport Crosscutters who are a minor league team of the Philadelphia phillies. i actually played a few high school games there because South Williamsport's field was floooded and was not useable for some time. the field is not small its a normal sized field.
21:17 there at Williamsport, the home of the Little League World Series,MLB has had a few special regular season games, this, the London Games, MLB @ Field of Dreams, and they had a two game series at Tokyo Dome in Japan a few years ago to celebrate Ichiro's final year in the Majors.
2:36 - Rain is situational. A little drizzle at any point is usual fine unless it goes on for hours and the field finally starts to hold water. As for this, they wouldn't start an inning, let alone a game in this type of rain. To Nick's point, you're absolutely right but, after 5 innings, you can call a game due to rain and still have it count as a full official game so here, if the home team scores and goes ahead, the game can end cleanly. Unfortunately, in my opinion, they probably let things go on a little too long. Especially since this rain could aid the home team in scoring said run. 8:54 - The reason they're arguing the call here is that the umpire ruled a caught foul tip for strike 3. Problem is the catcher didn't catch the ball before it hit the ground. I'm not even sure the batter tipped the ball. 12:30 - Knowing these 2, Elvis probably popped back over and sneak-attack-rubbed Adrian's head. Such a thing always elicited such a reaction from him. 21:12 - You're almost there Damo. It's where they play a regular season game at a small stadium (still major league dimensions but smaller seating capacity) in the same complex in Williamsport, Pennsylvania where they play the Little League World Series. They invite all of the teams that made it to the LLWS and let them watch the game. And yes, this IS Kimbrel's usual pitching routine. He's a closer who is a free agent and pitched for the Phillies last year. 22:20 - Yup, Prince Fielder. He and his dad, Cecil Fielder, were two of the most famous "fat guy" power hitters in history.
That Beltre clip was likely from a number retiring ceremony. In American sports, especially baseball, notable players for a team will usually have their number retired, meaning no other players can use that number in the future, as to honor the player who wore it. The Yankees, baseball's greatest team historically have the numbers #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, #7, #8 (twice), #9, #10, #11, #15, #16, #20, #21, #23, #32, #37, #42 (twice), #44, #46, #49, and #51 retired from use.
The little league World Series is in Pennsylvania each year I believe. The game was in Pittsburgh PA. I believe the little league is in Williamsport PA. So they just have a series around it so the kids can go watch the big leagues
Beltre and Andrus played together....Beltre didn't like people touching his head, so of course Andrus did it as much as possible....Usually Beltre would throw his glove at Andrus but his robe had to do this time. Beltre is hilarious! I'm sure there are plenty of videos you can watch about him.
5th inning is the cut off point for rain outs. If the game is called for rain after the 5th, it is officially over, instead of postponed for another day.
I think it was "Little League" night at the ballpark. They were celebrating what those 2 teams had accomplished. I couldn't tell what team the Cubs were playing, but I'm sure it was that teams park.
Anything that ever includes Beltre and Andrus and Beltre getting mad is because Andrus touched his head and Beltre goes apeshit angry over that. I promise after the robe was presented Andrus came back and touched his head. That has to be why he threw it.
its a tie gamed with a runner on second the game becomes official after the 5th inning is played.trying to give them a chance to break the tie and win the game.
