Fun fact: this isn’t at all a malfunction, when a doorbell’s battery gets low, it lacks the electric output needed to play sounds properly, so they are slower and deeper, same instance happens with other electronics due to lack of electrical input. Sometimes in different ways such as a damaged BT earbud playing sounds slower or a different pitch than they’re supposed to
This is basically what it is. An NES actually has an interesting behavior with batteries that shows this well. If the batteries get too low, the graphics go corrupted and the game starts to run slower until eventually the system powers off entirely.
I believe this would be because its internal clock which it uses to calculate how fast to play back the bits from its memory slows down as the voltage drops. I actually wasn't aware quartz did that. Also you may be able to notice that the clock rate perks up a bit at the very ends of the sequences, when the loudspeaker is only playing one tone. This means that the circuit is drawing less power, allowing the battery voltage to rise, in turn allowing the clock rate to shift toward normal. The only reason why you don't see this behaviour on modern electronics such as smartphones is because they usually have a killswitch at the hardware level, which triggers an emergency shutdown when the battery voltage crosses a certain threshold. They do this, I assume, because the corruption that goes on when a computer runs at low power could make a mess. (writing crap to the HDD, etc.)
