so I have a Jim Stafford story for ya'll! I am in Canada. For many years I worked for the Calgary Stampede. during this time Jim Stafford was performing on the free Coke Stage every night. He was staying in a hotel across the very busy street and would have to walk a long way around to get in a gate. So he made his own gate. He cut out a part of the fence and every evening he would cross the busy road and sneak in that way. and every couple of days our ground crew wound fix the fence. after a couple of years of this, we made him his own gate, just for him.

I saw him play in Ottawa. He opened for Kenny Rogers. It was a great day. We had special tickets. The day started with a bus ride out to a big ranch. There we had free beer, a corn roast, and listened to, and watched, the Family Brown playing all afternoon. They were spectacular. The bus then took us to Landsdowne Park where we had seats with a table and beer served. From there we watched and enjoyed a great set by Stafford. Cow Patty was a hit at the time. The Kenny came on with all of his catalogue. Very special night.

He has also recorded a version of "Mr. Bojangles" that will bring a tear to the eye. Jim Stafford covers everything from humor to pathos. He once said that he was raised as a Frisbeeterian. "We believe that when you die, your soul goes up on the roof and you can't get it down." Love your reactions!

Jim Stafford plays a bit of "Cow Patti" in a scene in Clint Eastwood's "Any Which Way You Can". Some of his better songs not already mentioned here is "Cows With Guns", "Marie Lavoe", and the most especially comical "Under the Scotsman's Kilt". Spiders and Snakes, Swamp Witch, and Wildwood Weed are probably his most well known tunes--and you can't go wrong listening to any of them. As far as Ray Stevens goes, I'd highly recommend "The Streak" and "Gitarzan" as must reactions.

Wildwood Flower is an old song probably dating back hundreds of years with some of the lyrics changing. The Carter Family recorded and released the most popular version in 1928. They were the first country or hillbilly group,consisting of AP Carter, Sarah his wife and her cousin Maybelle who was married to AP ‘s brother Ezra. Her youngest daughter June was Johnny Cash’s second wife.

I'm just glad the squad is getting into these old songs. I'm hoping they will eventually go even farther back to see the evolution of all the genres we have today. Most genres today have common roots at some point in the past. In this case.... yes the wildwood week lyrics are Jims. However the tune being played is the classic wildwood flower (actually the tune itself goes way way back I think before the wildwood flower lyrics). Here is a recording well worth listening two of Mother Maybelle Carter. and the Carter family. I'm not sure but that might be Johnny Cash wife to be June Carter on the autoharp. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ewnfWoSQz3o.html

@@Hobodeluxe960 True, but the opening chords to Jim's song are from the old carter song. oldtimers would expect the old song about a girl with an unfaithful lover, and suddenly find themselves hearing something else entirely.

The Carters are country royalty, present from before the Opry. Ma Carter co-invented the bum-chick bum-chick style of guitar playing (I forget the technical title) that so many country artists, including her son-in-law Johnny Cash, used.

Jim Stafford is a great guitar player and he's half singer and half comedian in concert. Saw him, The James Gang, and The Beach Boys all in one night's concert for $3. There was a streaker on stage that night during The Beach Boys. If you want to become more familiar with streakers, react to Ray Steven's song "The Streak". Yes, that was another thing going on in the 70's as Amber likes to point out.
@malcolmmceasy2252
@malcolmmceasy2252 Год назад
The tune this song was based on, "Wildwood Flower", was a VERY popular song by the "Carter Family"; (the same family of June Carter, who married Johnny Cash). Maybelle Carter (in her elder years known as "Mother Maybelle") is credited with popularizing the "Carter Scratch"; a manner of playing the guitar. See the black and white version of "Wildwood Flower" for a good example and closeup. In her much elder years, Maybelle also went on Johnny Cash's TV show to perform a variation on the song, called "Pick the Wildwood Flower"

I swear the funniest part of the whole song is after he says his brother claimed he flew up in the windmill, he says he had to fly up and get him down.

The opening tune is actually called "I'll Twine 'Mid the Ringlets" written by Joseph Philbrick Webster in the 1800s.A.P Carter of the Carter family (Johnny Cash was married to June Carter) wrote Wildwood Flower lyrics,pinned it to that tune and it is now a country classic.

Jim Stafford is such a great songwriter and he’s also a hell of a guitar player. He doesn’t get as much respect as he probably deserves. I recommend checking out the song, swamp, witch, and spiders and snakes.

I'm so glad you enjoyed Wild Wood Weed. The song that is. Spiders and Snakes, Cow Patti, My Girl Bill, and Swamp Witch were his biggest hits, but he had so many other great songs. He's an excellent guitar player as well. Ray Stevens' It's Me Again, Margaret; The Streak, and Sitting Up With the Dead are all hilarious. Jerry Clower's Coon Hunting Story is a country classic. Hoyt Axton is a great country storyteller. Della and the Dealer and Rusty Old Halo are two of his best. I would love to see you all react to Rhiannon Giddens live version of Ruby. She plays one awesome banjo as well as having a wonderful voice.

Jim Stafford was a real cutie and did some great story telling with his humorous songs. He had a TV show for a while and my mother and I would laugh our butts off. He was married for a short time to Bobby Gentry who was also a story teller through her songs like Ode to Billy Joe and Fancy. Love hearing these old songs again so thank you.
