Escape to the Italian Riviera with a cast including Katherine Parkinson (Home, I'm Darling, The IT Crowd) and John Heffernan (Dracula, She Stoops to Conquer).
Since the 1930s, the legendary family-run Hotel Messina has been visited by artists, celebrities and royalty.
When the current owner’s daughter falls for a dashing young soldier, the hallways are ringing with the sound of wedding bells.
However, not all the guests are in the mood for love, and a string of deceptions soon surround not only the young couple, but also the steadfastly single Beatrice and Benedick.
Director Simon Godwin (Twelfth Night, Antony and Cleopatra) returns following the award-winning success of his Romeo & Juliet film.

Saw this at The National. First time I'd seen Much Ado About Nothing. I laughed and I cried. It was great.

Hilarious. Love the way the burlesque is created through precision choreography .

The accents contribute to hilarity - I could hear each word distinctly.

Precisely.

I'm curious - how does having Claudio, a Florentine Count, speaking in that particular accent contribute to the hilarity?

@@howardalantreesong2588 Keep being curious... or rather, being totally UNCURIOUS. There's many modern dress adaptations of Shakespeare that add all sorts of elements that bring new life to the play, and root it in a recognisable world. And therefore make it feel accessible. But I'm getting big elitist, white, stuffy, pompous prick vibes from you, so this is why you're rejecting it. That, and the racism.

Hmmm...normally ice cream melts under stage lights. I wonder if they’re using mashed potatoes 🥔

I have seen many versions, both stage and screen, but they all show Benedict's reaction during the course of this scene, sadly lacking here.

I don't normally object to "Urbanese", but on this occasion I found the accent of the actor in the middle of the trio so off-putting and out of place in this scene that it was distracting me from everything else.

That wasn't urbanese....this comment whiffs of racism though.

@@jenniferbraun7269 Figueiredo is playing Claudio, a Florentine and a Count no less. The setting appears to be the Riviera of the 1930s and the costumes indicate they are of the 'smart set' of that era. Since anything and everything an actor says, does, wears, etc. on stage as part of the performance conveys a message about that performance and its place in the play as it unfolds ... What is the meaning of that accent - a very recognisable sociolect from urban parts of England, especially London (hence "urbanese") - in relation to the part of a young dashing aristocrat who has just won glory on the battlefield? Am I supposed to notice that he has this very particular accent or not? If I am supposed to notice it, again, what is it telling me about the character of Claudio? If I am not supposed to notice it at all, then surely I am right to point out that it's distracting? If I am supposed to notice it, but then ignore it as being irrelevant to the presentation of the play, what *else* am I supposed to be ignoring as irrelevant to the production?

@@howardalantreesong2588 It's not up to you to decide how art is presented. Read that again. It's not up to you to tell people ow to enjoy things. You seem very rigid.

@@jenniferbraun7269 As an audience member I am under no obligation whatsoever to like whatever happens to be served up simply because someone worked very hard to put it there and at the same time I am at liberty to freely express my thoughts on any given production however I like and whenever I like. Incidentally, I can't help noticing that you have made no attempt whatsoever, not even a feeble one, to actually explain why you evidently support the director's casting decision. I find that rather telling of your attitude overall, which seems to suggest that you think audience members are craven swine who should be eternally grateful to the creative talent for whatever that talent deigns fit to put before them. You can't *force* an audience (or any one of its members) to love something. Plenty have tried - with predictable results.

Who's the guy in the middle with the white trousers? Is it impossible for the NT to have actors who can actually speak clearly? What a mess. So much talent out there and you produce this.

He speaks perfectly clearly, he simply has an accent that isn't traditional RP. What's wrong with that? Does that particular accent trouble you? Bit too "urban" for your liking? He's also the best actor in this scene. Not that you'd know that.

@@saltymonkey7021 I recommend you stick to every other staid, moribund, predominantly white, middle-class, dull production of Shakespeare. I suspect that's more your style.
