I had the chance this week to see Hilary Hahn perform live in Munich, at the Philarmonie im Gasteig, with the London Philarmonic Orchestra and Paavo Jarvi as conductor. Firstly, she played Prokofiev Concerto n. 1, flawlessly as usual, but with such power, passion that I was completely overwhelmed. As encore she performed this exact movement from Bach Sonata n. 2, and as she started playing, magic flew through the air to embrace all the auditorium. The audience was so quiet I felt like being alone, and Hilary just filled the theatre with her sound, pure and delicate, dynamic and celestial. I was deeply moved and I cried. It was one of the most intense performances I've ever seen, and I should definitely thank this wonderful artist whom we can luckily appreciate in this epoch.

This interpretation is only possible because her violin, old as it may be, has been updated with a basebar and her bow, old as it may or may not be, is of modern design and allows for a much more intense and continuous sound. Bach did not compose on an instrument of this resonance and this ability to elongate notes and phrases. The baroque bow simply made this much bow contact and continuity of sound impossible. If Bach were alive today I believe he would be moved to tears by his work come to life, melodies growing and layering with precision and fluidity that was inconceivable in his day. Lend Hilary a baroque bow and increase her tempo and perhaps she recreates precisely what Bach wrote... but denies the evolution of her instrument, the modernness of her ear and the history of this piece's previous interpretations and thus, would have brought nothing "new". She isn't Bach. She isn't her teacher. She's not her instrument. Listen.

That's because of the genius hilary, i know her violin has nothing to do with this spiritual sound and nobody understands bach like her, please listen 20 times before judging

Very well spoken. Once again Bach's music remains exquisite through all types of developments and changes. That's why you can play his music on a toy piano or a MOOG and it always retains, even if you hate the timbre, its essential magic. I love Hahn's performance of this. I only wish she had done the repeat!

Right @@tamvionsr3999i think Conrad's point has validity though of course it is her bow arm and her left hand, her playing.

I am not familiar where Conrad got this info about base bar. Can he comment on it? An additional sound bar? Where , where? where did he get this information from. So far I thought this was just her style and technique.

Simply listen to Isabelle Faust. In general she plays Bach with a baroque bow and minimal vibrato. In my view this is fine also, but then forget about grandeur and poetry - Hahn is unique about that.

How do you practice this? Those double stops are so tricky!
@debashismitro3255
@debashismitro3255 4 месяца назад
By concentration. The double stopps are not the problem, the bowing is. The bass notes should be sustained snd the lyrical song should flow like a smooth ripple.

There is an emotional connection in her playing -- connection to the essence of Bach who is one of my heroes. I can't help but tear up a little. If we could only stop all the wars in the world and all the hate, and just have a listen. I think it would bring everyone to their knees. This is the music making of Hilary Hahn.

How can anyone dislike this. Please explain.
@Sam22music
@Sam22music 9 лет назад
Mathilde Wesendonck Because she plays this slower than it is marked. That's just about it. Someone said she plays it largo, I find that it is adagio. Some people are overly critical, and want music by certain composers to be played only in a few exact styles. Thankfully, I'm not like that, but Hahn's interpretation is not my favorite, but it is good nonetheless.

@maxiboi4958

+Mathilde Wesendonck constant vibrato makes it not fit the baroque style. Hahn's vibrato is always narrow but fast-paced, very weird for a baroque piece, making her tone quite strict

Conrad Ramirez sometimes I find her play too perfect and cold, that's her way of doing things but often I prefer a smoother approach like jansen or rustic like perlman or a light and humble one like lozakovich. The great thing with Bach is that if you listen to 10 violinists playing the same piece, it will sound like 10 totally different pieces.

If I get Bach in his head violin was supposed to sound a strings organ maybe that’s how it sounded in his Briliant head This piece is a great example of these melodies that fade in and out of a very deep place Hillary brings that out as no one else has because she can be inside Bach’s head often when playing his music. This is not so much an evolution but a recapturing and redeeming of something that was locked in by the tradition and technical difficulties of the 1600s bowing

It’s all in her bowing technique. Keep a sustaining steady legato on the d string (melody part) and periodically touches on the g string (accompany part) for the additional notes. All in slight up/down movements while keeping constant speed and pressure on d string

this piece is andante (100 bpm) not largo (50 bpm ). She's also not letting the piece breathe; the melody and bass have no contrast and she is attacking the g string with her bow rather than letting it glide like a ripple of water. Then take in account her lack of tonal colors, dynamics and phrasing.

I'm not a professional musician (unless you count playing bass guitar and singing/screaming for a punk rock band). But I am a HH fan. I'm not uncritical, and I can understand your points (she doesn't like the lower scales much, and she tends towards the technical over the emotional expression that creates "great" music) However, your comment might be more productive if you included some suggestions. Me personally? I think she ought to spend a couple of years learning Irish folk songs or the like. "Fiddle music" might do her a world of good.
