HILARY KOLE - "Over The Rainbow" 

I was keen to read the credits to see who penned this arrangement - Hilary Kole herself. A talented musician and a vocalist with excellent diction, good phrasing and modulation. She brings a level of sophistication to this song which is unrivaled. Performances of this quality are the real benefit which RU-vid brings us.

Up until today (11/5/19) the best version of this song I had heard (by far) was played on solo piano by Mr Keith Jarrett. Now, there is no longer just the one definitive performance of this song, there are two. Hilary plays piano with great sensitivity, and her voice blends exquisitely with the intimacy of the gorgeous string quartet. This is quite the loveliest version of this song I've ever heard, or am ever likely to hear. Hilary does what all really great musicians do (such as Olga Schep when playing Chopin) namely to draw out the deep emotions and yearnings of the soul, and to overwhelm us with sadness, melancholy, hope, and beauty. So here, Hilary has stepped from being merely a great performer of jazz standards, to becoming a world class musician, composer, arranger and singer. I am touched by this, as I am by the nocturnes, waltzes and barcarolles of Frederick Chopin. As a musician myself, I carry a lifetime of listening and playing in my heart, and Hilary and her wonderful supporting musicians have touched mine, profoundly and deeply.

Ah, so real singers still exist they just reside in the less popular side of youtube.

Arlen's chords are so much more beautiful and so much simpler. Hilary Kole is a reliably terrific singer and a musical pianist, no doubt. But what's the point of this harmonic ramble when it doesn't accrue emotionally?

I got lost at "When the world was a hopeless Jumper"...Good effort, but Judy was and always will be the best oh and Eva Cassidy's version. xxxxx
