Hill Forts, Gliders and Wells! the Royal Enfield Classic 350 Finds them all
It’s amazing how much history is all around us. On this ride we look at late Bronze Age - Early Iron Age hill forts, one of them now being used as a glider airfield.
Today the boarder between Yorkshire and Derbyshire is tranquil with people out enjoying the countryside.
In the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age it was a hotbed of conflict between two ancient tribes. The Corieltauvi to the south and the Brigantes to the north. The name Brigantes means high or elevated, like the Pennines and high moorland all around. Fortified hillforts are all along this frontier overlooking the lower plains.
One is now home to a glider club, a much more peaceful occupation.
To more modern years Betsy found the well-used to keep the plague quarantined in Eyam.
Grab your cuppa and let’s ride.
Ride safe,
Dave
