I can't thank you enough for this episode! I read the Trilogy of Lord of the Rings in the summer of 1969, and it is still my all-time favorite book. I couldn't put it down and was in tears when I finally came to the end. I loved Peter Jackson's films of the same name; I think they were an excellent adaptation of the books. Tolkien's knowledge of languages is simply unsurpassed. It was wonderful to actually see where he was stationed and hospitalized. in WW1. I was riding an old Puch motorcycle in 1969; I called it a Push, because I had to push it so much when it overheated. If I ever get a new Royal Enfield Classic 350 I shall call it Shadowfax, after Gandolf's horse! Thanks again! Pete
Hi Pete, I have watched the films, but never read any of his books, until now! I'm starting to read The Hobbit, doing the research for this video I have become hooked. It was very enjoyable doing the detective work and then seeing first had the locations. Ride safe, Dave
Hi Mike, I had to keep telling Ivy off, she was wanting to go for it around those bends, I kept telling her to think about the new tyres. Ride safe mate, Dave
Glad you enjoyed it! He sure is a very interesting person. It took a long time doing the research, but I loved it. The hardest part was editing it down, there was so much information I found it could have been well over an hour long. Stay safe, Dave
Hi Mick, glad you liked it. I got hooked doing the research especially when I found out I have been riding past the locations for almost 50 years. The highlight for me was finding Dents Garth, and seeing it first hand. Ride safe, Dave
What a wonderful road and weather at the start to scrub in Ivy's new boots, I ride a v-strom 650 and other riders overtake me quite often, I am not interested in riding fast I prefer trying to be smooth and keeping my licence and money in my wallet. Thanks for posting.
i agree, I started riding at 16 and never had any points on my licence in 48 years. I intend keeping it that way. The other advantage is being able to look around at the countryside rather than just looking at the road. Ride safe, Dave
Hi Donna, I do like history and bringing it together with riding the bike makes the ride interesting for me as well. I've never ridden any of his books, but I have started the Hobbit now. Ride safe, Dave
Another joyful evening’s entertainment for the wife and myself. It must be difficult chatting away to an audience that gives no answers or chat back, but believe me when we are answering and chatting back at you. Not sure when riding my V Strom ( solo ) I could be as entertaining. Thanks again and always looking forward to the next outing. Ride safe.
I come from Withernsea (With) and have to say I learnt alot ,, I never knew about Tokien being stationed in Holderness...So thanks for that.. Regarding Kilnsea,, "When I where a lad " in the sixties ,where you where standing there use to be a giant sea wall that ran half way to spurn point,, It started breaking down in the seventies and disappeared in the Eighties... Yeah when we where kids there was loads of places to explore ,,Spurn point was a maze of towers and tunnels,,it was magic...The things we got up to,,there being no health an safety,,I surprised I survived....
Hi, glad you enjoyed it. Have you seen the blue plaque on the wall of the LifeBoat Fish and Chip Shop? Edith stayed there when JRR was at Kilnsea. When I was a kid we came over most weekends camping at Burton Constable and would often have drive down the road to Spurn. Ride safe, Dave
@@thatblokeonamotorbike Well do you remember the WW1 spotting tower, it was massive with a giant cast circular staircase to the top ,with fine views over the shipping lanes,, and many undersand tunnels made out of corrugated iron,it was bloody dangerous because at that time they where craving in,,and another tower thats still there ,we called Magazine tower,we climbed to the top and eat our packed lunch,,Honestly we did not know how lucky we where! IF you are ever in Lincolnshire give me a PM
Hi, glad you enjoyed it. Putting the history to places I have ridden past many times was good. Doing the research, finding the glade especially was special. Ride safe, Dave
Hi Chris, I can remember going down that road as well. I have to confess, I dont like it when I have large expanses of water on both sides of me. So I had to dig deep driving and riding down it. Next time I'm over there I will have a go at going down to the visitor centre. Ride safe, Dave
That was a very enjoyable video of a part of the country I have never visited. Man! Roadmasters have massively increased in price since I last fitted them to my Bullet 25 years ago. They used to be reasonably priced compared to Bridgestones and Continentals. They used to have a stiff sidewall back then as well 😀 I think I would be happy with the Ceats especially if RE could import them cheaply.
Fantastic ride out as always, Thank you. Great facts about Tolkien brings his work to life. Collected my Classic today hope my rides out are half as good as yours. Stay safe.
Got it yesterday and it’s rained all day down here😊 Not disappointed as it needs running in so getting my head around that. If it rides half as good as it looks I am going to be one happy bunny!
Brilliant as usual the wife and i stayed in Withernsea for a week a few days before you shot this video , our first time in the area we loved it ,up and down the road to whitby, Scarborough and the moors fantastic time on a side note nice to see ivy coping so well with pillion stay safe 👍rob
Hi Rob, you went on the same roads and to the same places I did when I was 16 and camping with the family at the campsite just as you come out of Withernsea. It was those roads, 48 years ago that got me hooked on bikes. Ride safe, Dave
Hi thanks for the tip, I will have a ride down next time. It was very windy and I dont like open water like that when it's choppy, so I wimped out. Ride safe, Dave
I recently changed to Avon Roadrunner 2s and found them a bit harder ride, but that was at the RE recommended 32psi for the original CEAT tyres. I reset them to 27.5psi (front) and 29psi (rear) which are Avon’s recommended pressures for the tyre/bike and the ride improved considerably.
I used cheap tires . I get great milage. I never had a problem with any of them. I have worn out 37 back tires and 17 front ones in the 25 years I have had my HD 883 Sportster. I have 400,000 miles on the original engine. I am on my 3 rd belt drive in all those miles.
Thanks for the History lesson, interesting to say the least, luvly ride out, at least the rain held off until the home stretch. hope you didn't get too wet. Cheers DINO, PANDA, and Furry boys.
Hi Dino and gang, I managed to stay dry. I really enjoyed the ride. I have 5 days holiday starting tomorrow and was supposed to be going camping on the bike. The weather forecast is for very heavy rain, up to 50mm per hour, so I think I will be giving that a miss and sorting my campervan out for later this month. Keep safe over there, Dave
Great video, nice bends and a history lesson at the same time . I would be interested to know how the Avons compare to the Ceat’s, Avons were always my favourite tyres in the 70s. 😊
Hi Peter, my first impressions are they grip well, but the sidewalls are very stiff and you feel every bump much more that with the Ceat tyres. The milage will be the biggest thing, will they be able to outlast the Ceat, they did 10500 miles and still had a bit left. I will let you know how they go, ride safe, Dave
That was really very interesting. Well done for putting it together. I’ve read the Lord of the Rings books but could you tell me what the title of the book was that you read on Tolkien’s life please. 👍
Hi Nick, I enjoyed the research as well as the riding. I spent loads of time on the internet finding little bits of info, like the dog with two names, Bilbo and Baggins was from info about Hilary, his brother. The book I read is called Tolkien in East Yorkshire 1917 to 1918, an illustrated tour. Written by Phil Mathison, ISBN 978-0-9562994-1-3 I found lots nor info I wanted to put in, but the video would have been well over hour and a half if I did. Ride safe mate and keep you videos coming. Dave
