Hi Gijs, nice review of one of my tents👍Two comments and a question: First you desire a footprint that also covers the vestibules. However, this does not go along with the way Hilleberg thought out the ventilation: the tent fabric does not extent to the ground, and a driving rain would soon cause puddles in an extended footprint. Second, you mention that the fabric stretches with rising humidity. On an old Hilleberg Nallo 2GT we had tightened the tent too much lengthwise, and after returning from a sunny walk we discovered a 60 cm tear at the rear. Ever since, I use tent elastics for tightening the tent lengthwise. In case of the Helags, you need at least two, when both used at one end. Two on each end is even better, because that gives you two spare elastics Finally my question. Do you know of an inflatable mattress that is rectangular, thick, silent, well insulating (winter use!) and is 60 cm wide? A width of 65 cm is very common, but is not compatible with my 2-person tents: all their inners are 120-125 cm wide. Thanks & bye, Luuk

Hi Luuk, Thanks for the compliments and your thoughts. On the floor: agree and I know but to my experience I camp more with dry weather and then a full floor is useful. With rain… just fold it back under the floor inner tent. The elastics: 👍. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! cheers, Gijs

Thanks for the great review. I agree with most of your comments. I have a Helags. I really like it. It’s easy to pitch, is a good balance between weight, size and durability. I also have a Nallo GT. I prefer the Helags because you don’t get the tent sagging onto your feet in wind and the whole of the tent floor space is useable because the roof is high enough for the whole length. I would sell the Nallo and buy a Kaitum (a four season version of the Helags) for the winter if one was available for sale at the moment… if you want a full size footprint you could probably use a Kaitum footprint.

Gjis! I used the Helags 2 in the dry Canadian Rockies last year and I have to tell you, if you get two people in it, button it up, and you'll have a little too much condensation in it by morning. This tent MUST have doors open. My girlfriend and I are going to turn to the Rogen 3 coming out this spring.
@OutdoorguruGearReviews
@OutdoorguruGearReviews 6 месяцев назад
Hello Mat, Thank you for your response! I agree and I don't think I'm sad that the tent doesn't suffer from condensation... Just less than some other tunnel tents I've tried. I have a Fjallraven Abisko Endurance with the large vents and it is sometimes slightly better and sometimes even worse thanks to the fairly small low low-high airflow. That said, I don't think I've seen a lightweight tent in the last 10 years that doesn't suffer from condensation in all weather conditions. That's probably why I (Dutch) love cotton tents so much ;-). Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Happy camping too! Cheers, Gijs

Thanks for the review man. Ended up buying this tent after I saw this video. Was able to get mines on sale brand new with footprint for 600 USD. I have plenty of tents that work well but I wanted something nice for special trips. Luckily I live in Florida so this tent is basically a 4 season tent for us. Sleeps a little hot in the summer but opening both vestibules makes it very livable. Was actually surprised at how well the air moves through the tent. It also handles thunder storms well, only problem being sideways rain that sometimes slips under the fly. That being said the inner never got wet on the inside. This tent far surpassed my expectations, haven't found a quality issue yet. Originally bought the tent for car camping but now I'm finding myself wanting to stuff it in my kayak. I have other tents that are easier to pitch and lighter but the Helags feels something special. I cant say that I would have bought this tent for MSRP, at that price there's other tents I would buy first. However for the price I paid its probably the best tent purchase I've made.

Very thorough review, much appreciated. Seems like an excellent 3-season/no snow 2 person tent. Wouldn't be surprised to see some folks using it as a very roomy one person tent. 70D floor and 20D outer make a combination that's new to me but seems sturdy and most probably well is. Very roomy inside, with dual vestibule space and doors. 4 pockets! ('Hilleberg has listened!', the inner-tent-more-pockets!-afficionados can rejoice. 😉) The price is typically 'Hilleberg steep'. I've found my 'Hilly' (soulo rl) to be worth it though, incredible quality ensuring comfort and a decent sleep, also in gnarly conditions.

A very thorough review! I have the Kaitum 2. I bought it as I am 197cm tall, so the inner with vertical walls either end allow me to stretch out without my sleeping bag foot end or head end touching the fabric. You are right about the entrance though, it is quite low. I have a 30 year old Nallo 2 as my lighter tent but the Helags 2 is about the same weight but has way more room inside. Hilleberg tents are well made shelters though so the high price is understandable. I'm seriously considering the Helags 2 as a lightweight cycle packing summer tent.

And big thanks for reviews in English from European and Dutch perspective - really helpful for European audience, as context and perspective (weather, wildlife, measures...) are different from US, which renders many US review not applicable to EU (especially rainy north). Hi TTD, Thanks for the being there and noticing. Where have I been..... Well you noticed I was gone again.... Life is a bit less super duper at the moment. Mom has been in hospital several times, we all had Covid and I am still not ok; very tired after a couple of hours of work with splitting headaches. So.... I listen to my body and be slow and hope everything will land on it's feet in the end 🙏. The tent.... what purpose and conditions? Cheers, Gijs

Enne... zelf uitzoeken is toch veel leuker. Tipje: kleine loom elastiekjes. Je had toch ook iets geschreven over plastic onder de tent? Heb je dat weggehaald of ben ik in de war? Groet, Gijs

You mentioned you were in the Middle East camping. How did the tent perform in the heat and humidity? Looking at this tent but concerned that it may just be too hot here
@OutdoorguruGearReviews
@OutdoorguruGearReviews 6 месяцев назад
Hi Lee, You misunderstand me: the Hilleberg has never been in the Middle East. I was explaining about siliconized tent fabrics and that sand and dirt stick very easy to them and tent that was in the video was just an example. Nevertheless... I would not go camping with this tent in heat and humid conditions. Yes, it's more ventilating than some other tunnel tents and when it is not raining you can keep the doors open, but for heat and humidity and no rain I would just use a mesh inner tent with maybe a tarp. Way better than any closed tent. I Hope this answer your question/remark. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs

Hi there. Thank you for the clarification. In regard to silicon coated tents, that do get sand on them, is the sand easy to remove just by washing it with water ?
@OutdoorguruGearReviews
@OutdoorguruGearReviews 6 месяцев назад
Hi Lee, Removing really fine sand from can be a pain in bum to be honest. I use a garden hose and a cloth to get it done. But... the desert sand is very fine, like dust. Normal sand is less of a problem. Cheers, Gijs

Hi Gijs, I hope you're doing well. Thank you for taking the time to provide this review. I appreciate it; nicely done. Currently, I have an Enan for solo camping and a Nammatj 3 GT. However, since I am not using the Nammatj 3 GT anymore for deep winter or expeditions, I am looking into lighter options. I think the Helags ticks all the boxes, but I would like to see a GT version, to be honest. There is an 800g difference between both the Kaitum and Helags models. Therefore, I guess it will depend on the intended use which one is best. I am thinking of using the tent with my family during spring-autumn in the UK. How does the Helags perform in late autumn and windy environments? Since I use the Enan even in snow-free conditions in winter (I did minor modifications with a small weight penalty), I would be inclined to save the weight and get the Helags. However, going solo and with family are different scenarios. Thank you for your insights. Regards, Guido

Hi Guido, Thanks for your nice comment and sharing your gear. And sorry for my late reply, but family matters are slowing things down. The Helags... Depending on on weather and wind, It might be a cold for early spring an late autumn. That said.... it depends of course on your other gear and where you will camp. Horizontal rain and hard winds on a plain like Mount Helags... I would prefer a tent with walls to the ground. In a more shelter forest like environment: Helags for sure. Call me if you need to discuss ;-). Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
