My grandfather lived outside Hillsboro in a small community called Peoria. When he was 15, he witnessed a black man being burned at the stake on the Hillsboro town square on January 20th 1919. A white mob lynched Bragg Williams from the county jail and chained him to a driving post (a metal post in the middle of the where you hitched your wagons) at Elm and Covington on the SW corner of the square. 🥀
Hillsboro has been dying for years, and the shame of it all is that the town is in a prime location between Ft. Worth and Waco along one of the busiest interstates in the country. This town like many other Central Texas towns, has shunned progress for several years, it really makes no sense. I can understand not wanting an explosive growth like what North Texas has experienced in the past couple of decades, but why remain backward?
Hang on BB!, Hillsboro is actually already booming again ! Houses going up everywhere east and west of town. A great school system, Hill College, great museums! A new Buckees, a new QT and a new Tres Amigo's is being built now. That means jobs at least starting jobs. Manufacturing plants are staking out locations. With the I35E/W split there, it is now a high traffic area. It will not be recognizable in five years (No, I don't live in Hillsboro, just own farms near there)
